Middle kingdoms of India (or Classical India) refers to the political

entities in India from the 3rd century BCE and the 13th century CE.

The "Middle" period lasts for some 1!! years and ends in the 13th

century #ith the rise of the $elhi %ultanate and the end of the &ater

Cholas ('aendra Chola III died in 1*+).

The period is ,no#n as the classical period of India durin- #hich

India is estimated to hae had the lar-est economy of the #orld

controllin- /et#een one third and one fourth of the #orld0s #ealth.

CHALUKYA DYNASTY There style /lends the Indo2ryan a-ara and

$raidian style called as Chalu,ya style.

BADAMI CAV TM!LSThey are a comple4 of temples located at Badami a to#n in the

/a-al,ot district in the north part of 5arnata,a.

The entrance of the cae is li,e a eranda it has four columns

#hich is /eautifully sculpted #ith mind /lo#in- ima-es of &ord

%hia in different dancin- positions.

Three /asic features

. Columned hall

3. %anctum cut out deep into roc,.

The runnin- frie7e of 8anas in arious

postures are caed in relief on each plinth.

The outside erandas of the cae temples are

rather plain /ut the inner hall contains rich

and prolific sculptural sym/olism.

There are four caes

C29E 1This is %haiite cae. The important carin-s in this cae arean 1:armed dancin- %hia a t#ohanded 8anesha Mahishasura

Mardini 2rdha areesh#ara ; %han,arnarayana.

The ceilin- is adorned /y a

serpent motif ; other cared

fi-ures.

C29E This cave has Vaishnavite influence

with panels of Trivikrama & Bhuvaraha.

On the ceilings are carvings of Anantasayana,

Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva &other Ashtadikpalas.

C29E 3 The cave has carvings pertaining

to oth Shaivite & Vaishnavite themes.

!anels of Trivikrama, "arasimha,

Shankaranarayana, Bhuvaraha,

Anantasayana & #arihara are engraved

in a vigorous style. There are some fine

racket figures on the pillars of this cave.

$AV% ' There is an image of (ahavira

adorning the sanctum. Other carvings

here are of !admavathi & other Thirthankaras.

CH"LA DYNASTY

The Chola dynasty (also called Choda and Cholan) was an

ancient dynasty of southern India.

Together with the Chera and Pandya dynasties, the Cholasformed the three main dynasties of Iron Age India, who were

collectively known as the Three Crowned Kings.

B#IHADS$A#A# TM!L The temple is most famous due to its uniqueness as amongthe greatest glories of the Indian architecture.

Another striking feature about the temple apart from theblown out size of almost anything here, are the colours.

The fresco painting can be seen in the ceilings of thecorridors and also in the ceilings of the many sub-shrines.

They are an invention of the holas and the painting, which areabout !""" years old are still brightly colourful.

The temple has hola frescoes on the walls around the sanctumsanctorum potraying #hiva in action, destroying demonic forts,

dancing and sending a white elephant to transport a devotee toheaven.

These frescoes, portray the mythological episodes of the $ourney of#aint #undarar and the hera %ing to heaven, the battle scene of

Tripurantaka &'ord #iva( with Asuras &demons(.

The hola artists have proved their mettle by portraying even theAsura women with a sense of beauty

The Khauraho tem!les feature a variety of art work, of which "#$ isse%ual or erotic art outside and inside the tem!les.

&ome of the tem!les that have two layers of walls have small erotic

carvings on the outside of the inner wall.

&ome scholars suggest these to 'e tantric se%ual !ractices.

ther scholars state that the erotic arts are !art of indu tradition of

treating kama as an essential and !ro!er !art of human life, and its

sym'olic or e%!licit dis!lay is common in indu tem!les.

The tem!les have several thousand statues and art works, with

Kandarya *ahadeva tem!le alone decorated with over +#.

Core indu values are e%!ressed in multitude of ways.
