      David Firmstone MBE & Past Vice President for the Royal Watercolour Society   Born 1943 in Middlesborough, David Firmstone paints landscapes and seascapes on the Isle of Wight and abroad. He has won many prestigious prizes for his paintings and his work is held in several important collections.  

He currently shows his work at the Orchid House Gallery, Isle of Wight and Bankside Gallery, the home of the Royal Watercolour Society, London.

   Carinthia West   Best known for her writings in various publications ranging from Harper’s & Queen and Marie Claire to Tatler and Rolling Stone, Carinthia West has spent the best part of her life taking photographs.   Having performed before the camera several times as a model and an actress, she often found herself at the right place and time with her own camera ready to capture the moment.   Whether it was watching Mick Jagger’s wild jelly‐legged dancing during Rolling Stones get‐togethers, or quietly 

observing on the set of Alice Walker’s ‘The Colour Purple’, she has been there at the sidelines to document a great many unique and often infamous moments.   Her photographs have exhibited widely across the UK and USA, and are currently on show at the Hilton Asmus Contemporary in Chicago.   Carinthia West is the daughter of Lady Christine West and General Sir Michael West, who both helped to establish Quay Arts in the 1970s, in recognition of which Quay Arts’ West gallery is named.

   Kurt Jackson   Kurt Jackson MA (Oxon) DLitt (Hon) RWA was born in 1961 in Blandford, Dorset. His practice involves both plein air and studio work and embraces an extensive range of materials and techniques including mixed media, large canvases, print making and sculpture.   Over the past thirty years Jackson has had numerous art publications released to accompany his exhibitions. Three monographs on Jackson have been published by Lund Humphries depicting his career so far; A New Genre of Landscape Painting (2010), Sketchbooks (2012) and A Kurt Jackson Bestiary (2015).   

A Sansom & Company published book based on his touring exhibition Place was released in 2014.  Jackson regularly contributes to radio and television and presents environmentally informed art documentaries for the BBC. He was the subject for an award winning BBC documentary, ‘A Picture of Britain’. He is an ambassador for Survival International and frequently works with Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, WaterAid, Oxfam and Cornwall Wildlife Trust.   Jackson also exhibited at Quay Arts in 2009, with his solo show, The Solent Project in The West Gallery.

     Peter Wright   Born 1932 in Chingford on the London edge of Epping Forest, Peter Wright’s paintings have consequently been influenced by the surrounding trees and the British landscape.   After studying at St. Martin’s School of Art (1949‐53) and London University, Peter took up teaching in Leicestershire, Hertfordshire and finally on the Isle of Wight until 1985, after which he devoted his time to painting.  

Peter was also one of the founding members in establishing Quay Arts as the Island’s first Visual Arts Centres in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  Peter’s work can be found in public and private collections throughout Europe and with several Universities and major industrial companies such as ICI. His work has spread throughout the UK and as far afield as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Portugal, Spain, USA, South Africa, New Zealand.

   Rupert Besley   Rupert is an Island‐based cartoonist producing book illustrations and postcards. His cartoons have appeared in a variety of publications, including the Isle of Wight County Press, Punch, Private Eye, The Oldie and Country Life but also in other places ‐ from bus timetables to beermats. He has also written and illustrated a number of books of his own, including the bestselling ‘Scotland for Beginners’, ‘The Cannae Sutra’ and several cartoon collections.

      Martin Swan    Formerly a watercolour artist, Martin Swan now paints mostly in oils. He is a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and has exhibited as part of their 2015 Annual Exhibition, as well as many other exhibitions across the UK, including Quay Arts.   

Martin’s main interest is in abstract painting. Even with marine subjects, it is the abstract qualities of boats and quaysides that attracts him the most ‐ shapes, lines, angles and colours. Concentrating mainly on the basics of colour and form, Martin allows the stillness of the landscape to speak for itself.

  Lisa Traxler   Award‐winning artist Lisa Traxler is an Associate Member of the Royal Watercolour Society & National Acrylic Painters’ Association. Born in London, Lisa studied at Croydon Art College and then Birmingham University where she graduated with a BA Hons Degree in Fashion & Textiles. For many years she worked in London as a fashion editor and costume designer before moving to the Isle of Wight.  Her work has been exhibited widely in the UK including the RWS Bankside Gallery, Royal College of Art, Cork Street and Mall Galleries in London, the Crypt Gallery,    St. Ives and with the Bath Society of Artists. She was recipient of the Pro Arte Award (2014), the Colart Award (2012) & the Golden Award (2010) for her paintings at the 

NAPA National Exhibitions, The Crypt Gallery, St. Ives. Her vitreous enamel and steel mural painting on the exterior of the house she built with her partner, designer Lincoln Miles, gained huge attention when aired on national television (Grand Designs, Channel 4, 2010/12). Her work can be found in private & public collections throughout the UK, Hong Kong, New York, Australia & Italy.  Her solo exhibition, DECADE, toured from The West Gallery, Quay Arts in 2014 to the Apthorp Gallery, Arts Depot, London in 2015. A further solo exhibition of paintings and sculptures will be shown in the Penwith Gallery, St. Ives, Cornwall in 2017.

    Bridget Macdonald   Bridget Macdonald trained in Fine Art in the mid 1980s at the School of Art and Design, Wolverhampton Polytechnic. She lives and works in Great Malvern, Worcestershire. Her work is in the collections at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Worcester City Art Gallery, the House of Lords at Millbank, and in private and corporate collections in the UK, the USA, Italy, and France.   Bridget is represented by Art First, London and exhibited in Quay Arts’ West Gallery in 2013 with her solo exhibition of drawings and paintings The Poetry of Earth.   

A link between literature and the visual arts has been a characteristic feature of her work. Over the years she has used the classical literary concept of the pastoral as a framework on which to build her particular way of working with landscape. Formally, her work reflects her abiding interest in the art of the Italian Renaissance and she employs certain techniques absorbed from her study of that period – in the paintings thin glazes create deep pools of shadow, and contrast with light filled skies.

       Richard Kidd     Richard Kidd was born in 1952 and brought up in Newcastle, winning a Rome Scholarship immediately after graduating from Newcastle University. After spending time in Italy he returned to London, exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery and was taken up by the Rowan Gallery in London. He lived and worked in both California and New York, assisted by a Harkness Fellowship.  

He returned to Newcastle in 2001, where he lived and worked until his death in 2008.   "My paintings are about remote, mountainous landscapes because that’s where I feel most at home. I make them in ways which push my control of materials to the limit because that feels like ‘being there’”.  Richard Kidd.

    Sue Paraskeva   Sue Paraskeva graduated in 1995 with a Degree in 3D Design, Specialising in Ceramics at Middlesex University, London. She is a member of Contemporary Applied Arts and a Professional Member of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain. She has exhibited widely in public art installations, art fairs and residencies across the UK.  Her clients and commissions include, Calvin Klein Home, Madison Avenue New York Design Museum Shop, Shad Thames, London Turner Contemporary Shop, Margate, Herriott Grace, Fen and Ned, Liz Earle, Southern Art’s 

Craft Collection, Mima’s Permanent Ceramics Collection, as well as Porcelain Vessels for the Lord Smith of Finsbury and a 94 Piece Tableware Service for actor Kevin Costner.  Sue’s association with Quay Arts began in 2000 with a three year residency, culminating in a solo show in The West Gallery and permanent installation titled ‘Sunburst’, a ray of 90 porcelain panels, still to be seen on the Terrace Wall at Quay Arts. For many years Sue share shared her skills and enthusiasm for ceramics with students, at Jubilee Stores Pottery.

     Neil Tregear   Situated on the rugged south coast of the Isle of Wight, Neil Tregear’s Pottery produces a beautiful range of hand thrown stoneware pottery.   His work is sold in several galleries and shops on the Island as well as many well known outlets across the mainland. Each piece is hand thrown from a fine, white stoneware clay.  

The work is decorated in a variety of designs ‐ all drawing their inspiration and influences from the exceptional beauty of the surrounding landscapes.  Neil exhibited at Quay Arts in 2009 with All Fired Up, in The West Gallery alongside potter, Molly Attrill.

   Matthew Chambers   The ceramic works of Matthew Chambers are born from a love of geometric and constructivist art, architecture, and design. Each piece is a constructed abstract exploration of shape that combines traditional processes and contemporary form, designed to create a visual and tactile beauty and intrigue.   They are minimalist yet complex objects built from layering many circular sections within a single form.   All work is made from stoneware clay. Colour using oxides and stains are added directly to the clay body before the making process.  

Each piece is built from many sections individually thrown on the potter’s wheel, and they are sanded and polished at different stages ensuring a finish that is smooth to the touch.   Matthew Chambers graduated in 2004 with an MA in Ceramics and Glass at Royal College of Art, Kensington, London. He has been awarded several awards and scholarships, including a residency at Quay Arts’ Jubilee Stores Studios 2004 ‐ 2006 through the Arts Council’s ‘Setting up Scheme’. He is a Professional Member of Contemporary Applied Arts, London and exhibits widely across the UK and Europe.

   Molly Attrill   Molly Attrill first trained as an apprentice with Michael Leach at Yelland Manor Pottery, North Devon, and then at The West Surrey College of Art & Design, Farnham, under Henry Hammond (1974/77). She set up her own pottery in 1982 in an old grain barn at Mersley Farm, Newchurch, Isle of Wight (now The Garlic Farm) where she worked exclusively in earthenware.    In 2001 she was Highly Commended in the Country Living Enterprising Rural Women Awards. In 2014 Molly moved her pottery to a workshop in St Lawrence, IW which is part of a small complex of private studios rented to professional artists and makers.   

She works in majolica and slip and also reduction stoneware and porcelain.  A feature of her work is figurative decoration using her original drawings with techniques such as painting with oxides, wax resist and sgraffito.  Molly’s work has been featured in a number of specialist publications including an important survey of 20th Century Decorative Tiles, published in the US, and A&C Black’s Ceramic Handbooks series, Maiolica by Daphne Carnegy. She has also exhibited at Quay Arts in 2009 with All Fired Up, in The West Gallery with potter Neil Tregear.

    Brian Marriott   Brian Marriott was a practicing graphic designer in the early 1970s after graduating from Portsmouth Art College in 1970. He was one of the original founders of Quay Arts, when he and Nigel and Anne Lewington in 1974, had the vision to see that a disused brewery warehouse would make a great Art Centre. Two years later the 'Isle of Wight Visual Arts Centre’ was launched.   Brian Marriott Design progressed to become a well established and reputable design business based in 

Newport and has been involved with the Quay Arts in many ways since. He created the Quay Arts logo and exterior signage nearly 20 years ago, which is still used today.   Brian is now gaining a reputation within the visual arts and primarily works in recycled waste glass. He has very kindly created a unique, one‐off piece of GlassArt which celebrates Quay Arts’ 40th anniversary.

   Paul Woods   Paul Woods (aka Paradox Paul) is a conceptual artist. He previously worked as an architectural model‐maker and exhibition technician before focusing on his visual art practice.   Rather than working in a particular field or media, he works within a wide range of projects involving installation, photography, fine art, performance art and audience participation. His work can be defined as conceptual in whatever form it takes, while subversion and ambiguity remain a constant.    

The thrones seen here were created as residency in The West Gallery throughout January and February 2016 and form the current exhibition titled ‘Elevation’.   Everything is created from recycled materials collected from streets and building sites around the Island, with some items specifically donated. Reluctant to work from a blank canvas, Paul finds that reclaimed materials contain built‐in character and history, and builds according to images in his head and to sets of self‐imposed constraints. Made with only basic hand tools, the works have a feeling of simplicity and spontaneity, regardless of how long they may have taken to produce.
