As of March 1st 2012 we can now accept card payments.

Welcome to the July edition!

I hope by the time you read this that the rain will have stopped and we will be basking in beautiful summer sunshine. We can hope, can’t we?

You will have already noticed a change to the look of Around Lutterworth this month. We have chosen to use to our Company colour as the basis for the magazine instead of changing every month. This will be reflected throughout the magazine. We are also now able to tastefully highlight new or special advertisers on our front cover. If you’re interested in featuring in this spot, give me a call.

Changes to our magazines are all made possible thanks to the fresh enthusiasm of our new, young, graphic designer, Carl. He has some great ideas for improving and adding more appeal to our pages. Also new to our team are Daryl, who we have worked with for a number of years on other business ventures, and Paul, who will both be involved in our background systems and internet projects. Debbie and Nigel also join us on Sales. So, if you are a business owner who would like to advertise, they will be at the end of the phone or email for you.

So what else do we have in store for you? We have some fantastic articles

supplied this month. Firstly, thank you to Colette Gibson for sharing her interest in fundraising activities and especially allowing us an insight into the work of WSPA. We wish Colette great success on her Carpathian Mountain Trek. What an inspiration she is! Thank you also to Simon Jones for his information on Lutterworth Dodgeball Club. What an excellent way to keep fit and make some new friends. Come on Lutterworth – get involved! We are also very grateful to Michael Lenihan from Lutterworth Town Council for providing a write-up and some photographs from the town’s Jubilee celebrations. Lutterworth’s enjoyment of the festivities was certainly not hindered by the weather.

Remember if you have some news, an event or a club you would like to promote, get in touch. We’d love to share it with you!

Enjoy!

Amanda

I have supported charities (mainly animal and environmental) since primary school when a friend of mind brought in raffle tickets for Redwings Horse Sanctuary; which I still support. I raise money in various ways such as holding a raffle, bingo, car boot sale, sponsorship for events such as Trekking the Great Wall of China which I did in 2007, driving challenge and the Race for Life. I am also willing to dye my hair various colours and do silly things to raise money.

I got involved with the WSPA because there are so many to help, I have a few I support each year, giving when I can and raise large amounts of money for a specific one each year; this year I chose WSPA because the focus is on brown bears that are kept captive in bile farms, used in bear baiting fights with dogs (both dogs and bears get seriously injured) and kept in cages for tourists at roadside zoos. There has been a sanctuary set up in Romania, which got flooded last year and they are in desperate need for funding. The way these animals are being kept and used is archaeic and unnecessary so I not only want to raise money but awareness that, as tourists to area that conduct roadside zoos and baiting for public show, that we must not encourage and take part in such events.

History of WSPA:

For 25 years, their aim has been to promote the concept of animal welfare in regions of the World where animal welfare is of least if any concern with poor protective legislation. There are 4 priority areas; companion animals, commercial exploitation of wildlife, farm animals and disaster relief for animals. They make a difference by educating people to alter their attitudes towards animals and to learn to share their habitat and by petitioning local government to ensure laws are enforced to protect animals.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

It’s getting to that time of year when we all think about summer holidays, in this blog I give some tips and suggestions about improving your holiday photographs, (assuming they need improving ☺ ). The first thing to say is you don’t need a top of the range camera to improve your pictures. They can be improved by following a few simple rules and tips. Having said that, a photograph captures a moment in time, and a holiday photograph is there as a memory of a great time with family and friends. Secondly, photography is subjective it is an art, if you like a photograph then it doesn’t really matter what anybody else thinks! The next few blogs will look at taking photographs in low light, composition, dawn and dusk lighting.

One of the main things to consider is composition. Holiday photographs, usual consist of photographing family and friends, places of interest, and scenery, one photograph could have all three elements.

Composition: composition involves what the photograph contains, where are things in the photograph placed. For example when we photograph people we usually place them in the dead centre, it may make a more interesting composition if the person was placed to one side. I say “may” as this is subjective and you may not like it!

Fill the frame; don’t be afraid to zoom in so the object or person fills the frame, Use the camera in portrait mode to bring in the subject and location into frame.

Taking good holiday photos; Composition.Placing objects to one side also makes the photograph more pleasing to the eye. (In jargon terms this is following the rule of thirds, more on this another day)

Before you take the photograph think about what’s in the background, does it add or distract, we have all taken photographs with trees poles and other things growing from a person’s head.

The hut is a distraction, recompose the shot >>>

The Handy Household - Aluminium FoilAluminium foil is commonly referred to as tin foil because the original product manufactured back in the early twentieth century was actually made of tin, but all the ‘tin foil’ you buy these days is now aluminium. A staple of the kitchen for over 100 years then, but it has many other uses around the home.Soften brown sugar by wrapping it in foil and putting it in a medium oven for around 5 minutes.Your dog or cat will dislike the feeling and sound of foil, so lay a sheet over your chairs and sofas and within a few days they’ll learn not to jump up. Likewise cover table and chair legs and this will put them off using the legs as a scratching post.Increase the effectiveness of your ironing board by laying a sheet under the cover. The foil will reflect the heat back meaning you can iron on a lower setting. The same principle applies if you put foil behind your room radiators. If you have a tray of ice cubes in the freezer, cover it with foil and this will ensure the ice stays clean and doesn’t pick up odours from other food.If you are having your carpet cleaned you may not be able to move the larger furniture out of the room. Squares of foil under the legs will protect the furniture and won’t stain the damp carpet.Extend the life of your scissors by cutting through several layers of foil to sharpen them.

We are a newly founded club on the hunt for members, of all ages, abilities and skill sets. Dodgeball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and we want you to get involved!

The GameThe fast paced game features 6 players on each team, with 3 balls in play at any time. The object of the game is simply to eliminate the opposition as quickly as possible; each game lasts for 2 minutes, and you can get rid of an opponent by throwing a ball and hitting them out, or by catching one of their throws.

The sessions at Lutterworth Dodgeball Club are taken by two international players, Brett Koenig and Simon Jones, who have both represented England on multiple occasions. The founders play for ‘The Meteors’- a product of the Lutterworth Dodgeball Club- one of the top 5 sides in the country.

Lutterworth Dodgeball Club

The Beauty of DodgeballThe beauty of Dodgeball is that it requires no specific skill set, the sport is available to people of all abilities and ages. Within the club there is a real friendly, try your best ethos, and you can take training as seriously as you want, and if you begin to find yourself getting competitive, you may even fancy playing in some nationwide tournaments!

Dodgeball is a really addictive sport that is great for fitness, meeting friends and staying healthy. Training takes place on Tuesday nights at Lutterworth Sports Centre from 7 - 8pm, and your first session is completely FREE. If you want to come again then a charge of £2 applies, but remember, your first session is completely FREE.

Sunday dawned grey and overcast, with the rain falling steadily – not ideal for an open air street party. However, not to be thwarted the party was moved indoors into the Wycliffe Rooms, where tables were set up and chairs put in place and we crossed our fingers hoping for a good crowd.

We were not disappointed as people started to arrive from 11:30am onwards determined to enjoy the day. There were two sittings which attracted over 350 people, who wore the hats, waved the flags, sang the songs and ate their picnics without giving a second thought to the weather. St. Mary’s Church also attracted a sizable crowd who enjoyed the same fun atmosphere. So although the street party did not happen the basis behind the event went ahead and the sizable crowd were still able to wish the Queen a great big thank you for being such an excellent monarch during her sixty year reign.

However Monday was a very different day, the rain had gone and the sun shone down on a crowded recreation ground, where a stage had been set up, a beacon erected and Radio Leicester were on hand to capture the whole event. The action on stage was preceded by the ceremonial running of the Jubilee torch round the streets of the Town, arriving on stage to signal the commencement of the events fun. On stage there were singers and musicians from The Choral Society, The Youth Theatre Academy, The Musical Theatre Company and the College who all joined together at the end of the evening to sing patriotic songs in the lead up to the lighting of the beacon. Once the beacon had leaped into life the event climaxed with a fireworks display to be proud of.

Lutterworth definitely paid tribute to the Queen in spectacular style.
