As of March 1st 2012 we can now accept card payments.

Welcome to the July edition!

I hope by the time you read this that the rain will have stopped and we will be basking in beautiful summer sunshine. We can hope, can’t we?

You will have already noticed a change to the look of Around Rugby this month. We have chosen to use to our Company colour as the basis for the magazine instead of changing every month. This will be reflected throughout the magazine. We are also now able to tastefully highlight new or special advertisers on our front cover. Thank you to Impact Dance with Hayley for this month’s colour co-ordinated ad!

If you look closely you may also spot that we have increased our distribution from this month. The July edition will reach all homes in Cawston, Dunchurch and the majority of those in Bilton (check our website for the streets and postcodes included).

Changes to our magazines are all made possible thanks to the fresh enthusiasm of our new, young, graphic designer, Carl. He has some great ideas for improving and adding more appeal to our pages. Also new to our team are Daryl, who we have worked with for a number of years on other business ventures, and Paul, who will both be involved in our background systems and

internet projects. Debbie and Nigel also join us on Sales. So, if you are a business owner who would like to advertise, they will be at the end of the phone or email for you. If you’re thinking of starting your own business, check out the article on Alex Pigott of AP Autos. He is a real inspiration!

So what else do we have in store for you this month? Impact Dance with Hayley offers some great activities for children, the Rugby Festival of Culture kicks off on 2nd July and Rugby St Andrews RFC advertise ‘Hamplified 2012’, a great fundraising event on 28th July. Not forgetting the Rugby Race for Life on 15th July. Also helping us through the month are Keith Jones Photography offering us some tips for great holiday photos, Denise Cleary from Salon One with her tips for summer hair care and Warwickshire College Gym encouraging us to ‘Get fit for summer’.

Enjoy!

AP Autos

Recently established business AP Autos opened its doors recently and put a young man’s long term plans into full gear.

Alex Pigott wanted to set up his own business eventually and, thanks to unforeseen circumstances, was able to make the bold move ahead of schedule.

The 21 year old found himself out of a job last year following a lengthy absence from work after breaking his arm. Although he was able to complete his mechanic’s apprenticeship, his employer was unable to offer him a permanent position at the rate his qualified status required.

Not content with being unemployed and not wanting to waste his talents, he made the life changing decision to go it alone straight away. Alex had managed to save money during his incapacity and put it to good use by securing premises in Albert Street, Rugby and equipping his workshop for all manner of vehicle repairs.

AP Autos offers a full range of repairs and renewals on brakes, clutches and exhausts among other things as well as MOT tests, diagnostics and services. Competitive charges along with a collection and delivery service for busy motorists makes AP Autos well worth a call!

It’s getting to that time of year when we all think about summer holidays, in this blog I give some tips and suggestions about improving your holiday photographs, (assuming they need improving ☺ ). The first thing to say is you don’t need a top of the range camera to improve your pictures. They can be improved by following a few simple rules and tips. Having said that, a photograph captures a moment in time, and a holiday photograph is there as a memory of a great time with family and friends. Secondly, photography is subjective it is an art, if you like a photograph then it doesn’t really matter what anybody else thinks! The next few blogs will look at taking photographs in low light, composition, dawn and dusk lighting.

One of the main things to consider is composition. Holiday photographs, usual consist of photographing family and friends, places of interest, and scenery, one photograph could have all three elements.

Composition: composition involves what the photograph contains, where are things in the photograph placed. For example when we photograph people we usually place them in the dead centre, it may make a more interesting composition if the person was placed to one side. I say “may” as this is subjective and you may not like it!

Fill the frame; don’t be afraid to zoom in so the object or person fills the frame, Use the camera in portrait mode to bring in the subject and location into frame.

Taking good holiday photos; Composition.Placing objects to one side also makes the photograph more pleasing to the eye. (In jargon terms this is following the rule of thirds, more on this another day)

Before you take the photograph think about what’s in the background, does it add or distract, we have all taken photographs with trees poles and other things growing from a person’s head.

The hut is a distraction, recompose the shot >>>

24Quick tips to avoid sun-damaged hair: Sun, sea and sizzling temperatures can result in hair that’s strawlike, dull and damaged. Here are some of the most common summertime challenges:

Parched, brittle hair: The key is to protect your hair during the day:

• Wear a scarf, hat or cap to protect your hair from the sun, but make sure it’s not so tight that it will restrict circulation in your scalp. • If you know you’re going to be in the sun for a while, and you don’t want to wear a hat or bandanna, apply a leave-in conditioner with UV protection, then dress your hair into a practical plait or ponytail, adding a little more conditioner around the hairline and ends for protection.

Fading hair colour: Exposure to the sun, excessive heat or pool chemicals can quickly fade hair colour and highlights can literally fade overnight. • Before going to the pool/ sea, wet your hair using tapwater; this will decrease the absorption of chlorinated/ salt water into your hair. • If the pool is highly chlorinated, wear a swimming cap, or put your hair up and avoid getting it wet! • Use a clarifying shampoo (or rinse hair with Club soda) after swimming to wash out the chlorine/ salt and any residues.

Fixing frizz: Exposure to sunlight comb ined with humidity can cause frizziness.

• Prevention: Avoid daily shampooing and use heavily moisturized formulas which contain keratin, jojoba, argan oil (Moroccan Oil) and other hair strengtheners/ moisturizers. • Fixing the frizz: Apply a deep conditioning hot oil treatment or leave-in conditioner. Don’t use heated appliances and leave to dry naturally.

General summer hair-care:

1. Get your hair trimmed just before you go on holiday, to minimize the potential for split ends and damage. Your hair grows faster during warm weather and will probably need trimming every 6 weeks to keep in shape. 2. Beware of having hair bleached immediately before a hot-weather holiday as your hair will be more porous and susceptible to chlorine – and may take on a green tinge. Visit your stylist for a colour-correction when you get home! 3. Limit your use of hot styling items; if you need to use one, use a leave-in conditioner and apply an anti-frizz serum/ heat protector before styling. 4. Healthy hair is hydrated hair – drink plenty of water and avoid the drying effects of caffeine in very hot weather.

This year we’re celebrating 30 years of The Myton Hospices and 10 years of Rugby Myton Hospice, and we would love you to help us celebrate these milestones and raise much needed funds at the same time! We’re asking supporters of Myton to hold a Birthday party on our behalf sometime between June and September 2012, where party guests make a monetary donation to Myton. From coffee mornings to dinner parties, fancy dress days to picnics, just invite your friends and encourage them to bring a party gift (a donation to Myton!). We have a special Birthday Party Pack available which contains all the details and materials you need to plan your party.

Alternatively you might like to take part in The Big Birthday Give - our biggest ever House to House collection in September. You can choose which street you collect in and even join together with your church, school friends or work colleagues for a team challenge!

For more details about how to get involved in our birthday celebrations, please call us on 01926 838809.

Each year we need to raise £7.2million and we are very lucky to receive a great deal of support from people across Rugby who fundraise on our behalf.

The latest upcoming local events are listed below:

Rugby 250+ club’s Strawberry Tea, Sunday 24th June - 2.30 – 4.30pm at Rugby Methodist ChurchTickets are £5 and can be ordered from Peter Tye on 01788 813172.

Rugby Reads - part of the Rugby Festival of Culture, 2nd to 15th July 2012‘Rugby Reads’ is appealing to the community of Rugby to enjoy reading aloud, and at the same time to raise money for The Myton Hospices’ Myton at Home service. As 2012 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, and Dickens has a link with Rugby through his ‘Mugby Junction’ stories, he is this year’s theme for ‘Rugby Reads’. For more information about how to get involved please email [email protected] or ring 07500 484756.

Coton Park Resident’s Association Fun Day in Coton Park Rugby, Saturday 7th July 2012 from 2pm to 5pm. A Fun Day organised by Coton Park Resident’s Association

And finally, we’d like to say THANK YOU!!...Our brilliant Rugby Support Group has raised over £2,000 in the last few weeks from various events across Rugby and we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped to organise these events and everyone who attended!
