This is the type of conversation starters that we are all familiar with and engage in all the time. An example might be mentioning the weather or asking someone what they do for a living. In the St. Louis area, asking where you went to High School is a conversation starter for some. The art of conversation, face to face, is becoming less and less in our modern technological world. Instead of actually speaking to someone, there are a number of ways to let them know what is going on. Texting and messaging in all of the different formats is becoming the norm now. However, there are so many things that are lost in a written message. Hard to convey all the nuances of nonverbal communication in a message. Hard to hear the tone of voice or see the expression of the speaker. Turning off all the messaging may not be the best option, but it would be interesting if only for half a day you would try to not return the message with a message. Instead, each time you receive one, you call the person. One of the reasons for some that use messaging often is because they think it is less invasive into a person’s day. If they do not answer, then you probably think they are busy. So what, if anything, does this article have to do with our spiritual life. Well, it occurred to this writer that we may sometimes let the world dictate what we do. It seems harmless, but we must always be careful to not allow the things of this world to keep us from doing what we should. No, it is not the intent of this article to say that messaging in and of itself is bad. It provides another way to reach out to friends and loved ones. But I would caution you to not become enthralled with having to have the latest and greatest way to communicate. One on one conversation still cannot be bested. This is still the best form of communication. This is the one God first employed and created. Let us not discount it or fail to use it properly. Instead of messaging someone today who you love, call them or stop by and converse in person. Your day and theirs will be better for it and you might just learn something. As you make your next acquaintance and make some small talk, enjoy it. Let them know how pleasant it is to converse in person. You never know how making that impression may lead to further conversations. Maybe even one where you can introduce them to the gospel of Jesus Christ. “Lost Art?Dan Curry Arnold Church of Christ 2267 Scott Dr Arnold, MO 63010 ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED Non-Profit U.S. Postage Paid Permit NO 17 Arnold, MO 63010 (636) 296-2038 offi[email protected] www.arnoldcoc.org

Summer Youth Intern

As you know, we’ve made some changes in the minister roles in order to meet our congregation’s unique challenges in the areas of spreading the gospel, expanding the kingdom, feeding the flock, developing our youth, and increasing the involvement of our families. In line with this, we are looking for a Youth Intern for this summer. The description of this position is as follows:

The church of Christ in Arnold, Missouri is seeking a male youth ministry intern for 10 weeks in the summer of 2016. The ideal candidate is a young man in college seeking a Bible degree, a ministry position, or is interested in working with youth after graduating.

The youth intern will work under the direction of the Arnold elders and work closely with the associate minister and youth deacon. This position will keep the youth intern very busy all summer.  Some of the activities will include organizing events (VBS, youth rally, social activities), conducting devotionals and youth-led worship, teaching/preaching, making visits, and acting as teen campaign chaperon and Bible camp counselor. The intern candidate should be Christ-centered, faithful, responsible, humble, Biblically sound, and have a love for God and young people. A driver's license is required and the intern will need to have access to his own vehicle for transportation.  The youth intern salary is $400 per week.  If the intern does not already live in the local Arnold area, housing will be provided.

We are an active congregation of about 300 members South of St. Louis in Arnold, Missouri with 5 elders, 13 deacons, and 2 ministers. Our aim and goal is to simply be a local congregation of the Lord's church as found in the New Testament. We follow God's Word as our sole authority and guide for all things pertaining to life and godliness.

If you are interested in the position, please email a cover letter and resume to [email protected].
