could not have done it without the support from our board and our Executive Director, Fred Miller.

I have had the opportunity to see the association through different eyes. I have witnessed firsthand the challenges that NCALC faces and the benefits that were provided to the membership. I definitely have a greater respect for all the work that our board members do as volunteers for the good of the cause.

And one of the efforts coming in May is our Annual Convention in Wrightsville Beach. By now you should have received the information for this years convention. If you have questions or you have not received anything, please give Fred Miller a call.

This is a great opportunity to not only learn about what is happening in our industry, but also a fun time at the beach renewing friendships and making new friends. I hope to see all of you there.

Again, I am thankful for the opportunity and I look forward to working with Rita Foley, as she takes over the reins as our next President of NCALC.

Tom Volk, NCALC President

Hello,

I wanted to drop you a note about the natural gas tax changes.

Thank you very much NCALC for saving us a big bag of cash (almost $$$$$$). We contacted the gas company and they not only replied to us in a couple of days but our next, YES NEXT bill had our refund already applied. Shelby and I are not long term members so we can only appreciate the heavy work the NCALC has done from a distance. Since we have become members we have received many great ideas and quality advice from every member and the many

experts that have been brought to us.

These ideas are very helpful and save us tons of headaches and cash but they are slow to implement so the WOW factor is not as great as it should be. In this case the WOW factor is huge. We were credited just about a full months gas bill. That is big, real big. We need to continue to get the word out not just to our members but to the whole state. Being an NCALC member pays BIG benefits!! Thank you,Patrick & Shelby Collins

Tips for the Professional Drycleaner

Use Proper Spatula Etiquette:Never Dig!

The purpose of the spatula is to gently work stain removal agents over the stain and into the fabric. This action helps break up the stain so it can be flushed from the fabric. However, what you’ll normally see is the technician attempting to “dig” the stain out with the pointed edge of the spatula. This improper use of the spatula is a sure way to cause fabric damage. The proper technique for the spatula is to use the rounded surface and allow it to come in contact with the stains about a half-inch from the point. Very little pressure should be applied.

Keeping Stills Going! To keep your still working as it should, drain out all the residue at least once a week and scrape the sides and bottom clean. Still residue will build up rapidly and slow down distillation. Dirty stills also trap solvent in the residue, increasing your waste removal cost and solvent purchases.

Since 2012, DLI Members have pledged to reduce steel hanger waste by 90 million hangers or 2,710 tons of steel. That’s 5,420,000 - almost five and a half million - pounds of steel. We know it’s only a small dent in the grand global total, but it’s some-thing to feel good about.

To put that into perspective, consider that the blue whale, the largest living species we know, can weigh as much as 150 tons or more. By the end of 2015 DLI members will have saved 3,900 tons of steel or the equivalent weight of 26 full-grown blue whales.

We’re aiming to increase our total by 40 million more hangers and 1,200 more tons of steel by Earth Day 2016. By recycling hangers DLI members gain publicity, prevent waste, and save money. If you signed up previously, please renew your pledge at

Free Hanger Recycling Program Continues

Help Us Reuse 40 Million More Hangers, 1,200 More Tons of Steel.

Sign Up Now at DLIonline.org!www.dlionline.org/Hangers to receive your up-dated promotional materials. You may adjust your pledge by contacting Fran at [email protected] or calling 800-638-2627.

New participants may join for free at www.dlion-line.org/HangersAll participating DLI member cleaners will be list-ed on DLI’s website. North American media out-lets have been sent a news release with links to this page. Posters and other materials are sent au-tomatically by e-mail after a new participant reg-isters. Registration is absolutely free. In order to keep the cost free, DLI is providing the materials in digital form only. Participants may profession-ally print the materials at their local copy center and are encouraged to print in whatever size they wish for in-store display.

Participants are encouraged to make mention of the program in advertising and correspondence with customers to let them know what they are doing to recycle and help the environment. Participating cleaners are also encouraged to work with groups such as scouts, schools, or religious institutions in their areas. Every little bit helps and partnering with groups spreads awareness about the participating cleaners effort, thus accelerating the achievement of the goal.

“This program is designed to help the environ-ment, customers, and cleaners,” said DLI CEO Mary Scalco. “Our first three years with this pro-gram were remarkably successful and we’re cer-tain we can reach the new goal by Earth Day 2016. We’d like to see that number continue to grow as awareness of the program spreads.”

“Most drycleaners already recycle hangers. It just

makes good sense to do so,” said Jon Meijer, DLI Membership Director. “Now we’re asking clean-ers to track the number of hangers they reuse or recycle and report it as part of this program. By working together and tracking our results we can monitor the program’s contribution to a greener planet.”

Cleaners participating in the program pledge to reuse hangers whenever possible and recycle un-usable hangers with local steel scrapyards. Partic-ipants will be asked to track the hangers by esti-mated count. Cleaners will report their recycling numbers to DLI for inclusion in the program’s grand total, which will be reported to national me-dia. DLI will provide local-level publicity support and in-store materials cleaners can use to raise awareness of the program.

The program is open to DLI member cleaners only. DLI member cleaners can sign up in the members only section of DLIonline.org or by contacting Fran Johnson at DLI for more information, 800-638-2627. Log into the Members Only and choose the fourth link (DLI Cleaners Care) and complete the form to register and get your program materi-als. You’ll need your Member Number, which can be found on the front cover of any Fabricare mag-azine. Please note that your hanger pledge count is re-quired to complete the form. Please provide your best “guesstimate.” This article by Dave Beatty can help you estimate your hanger count.

Make your hanger pledge and your materials will be sent to you automatically by DLI’s website.

Participating Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI) member cleaners will work together with consumers across the U.S., to keep unnecessary waste out of landfills. DLI cleaners can register on-line at www.dlionline.org/Hangers or by calling DLI to register and share their estimated pledge. Consumers can help by bringing all unneeded hangers to a participating DLI Cleaners Care dry-cleaner for recycling. Consumers can check online for the nearest participating cleaners at Error! Hy-perlink reference not valid..

Although other cleaners may recycle hang-ers, only DLI Participating Members listed on our website count toward the 40 million goal.

What? DLI Cleaners Care cleaners pledged to do their part in recycling 35 million hangers in 2014, keeping 1,050 tons of hangers from the na-tions already-stressed landfills. The goal has been raised to 40 million hangers which is 1,200 tons of steel for 2015. Participants will reuse any hangers in like-new condition and commit to recycle the rest with a local steel recycler whenever possible. Participating cleaners will ask their customers and their communities to bring unneeded hangers to their businesses for reuse or recycling. DLI will support the program with local press releases and posters participants can display in their stores. Regional and national press releases will be made available to promote the project. DLI CEO Mary Scalco will be available for interviews or guest ap-pearances to help promote the project.

Consumers can help raise awareness of this project by telling their friends and family who care about the environment about this project.

When? The program began in 2012, increasing and meeting goal each year. The more participat-ing cleaners and consumers, the faster the group can achieve the goal. When this goal is met the program will continue with a new goal.

Where? The DLI Cleaners Care-Hanger Recy-cling is a program available to DLI members only. Members may sign up in the Members Only Sec-tion of DLIonline.org.

All participating DLI member cleaners will be listed on DLI’s website. North American media outlets have been sent a news release with links to

this page.

Participating cleaners are also encouraged to work with groups such as scouts, schools, or re-ligious institutions in their areas. Every little bit helps and partnering with groups spreads aware-ness about the participating cleaners effort, thus accelerating the achievement of the goal.

Why? This program is designed to help cus-tomers and cleaners who care about the environ-ment and the future as much as they care about clean clothes and looking great. The program also demonstrates partnership and unity among DLI members, their customers, the Institute, and State Affiliate Associations. Working together dryclean-ers can make a profound difference in our indus-try’s waste reduction.

DLI members and their customers want to do their part to keep 1,200 tons of steel out of landfills and save money that they can reinvest back into their business with new, environmentally-friendly procedures and equipment.

DLI’s support on the local level will help pro-mote the program and the individual businesses participating in the program. The program aims to share positive media reports about public works programs.

Summary This program is a great way for cleaners and

consumers to work together to reach a worthy goal. Get involved and help make it happen. If you know of anyone who can help get the word out, please let them know about this 40 million hanger project that is a winner for everyone involved.

Food For Thought From Our Friends at DLI

Sign Language When was the last time you looked at your business sign? Or looked at it with new eyes, as though seeing it for the first time?

A business sign is usually the first thing a person will notice when they are looking for a company. So, you want to make sure it conveys an excellent first impression!

What does it visually communicate about your business? Does it look fresh? Does it present a positive image? Does it explain what your business is or does? Does it make your business building easy to locate? After answering these questions, perhaps you have come to the conclusion that it’s time to update your signage. There are lots of options available for signs these days. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

• Make sure your sign is consistent with your other advertising, use the same logo, colors, or font style if possible.

• Consider the farthest distance your sign will be seen from when deciding on size.

• Keep the wording simple, too much clutter makes it hard to read.

• Try to pick a style that will provide contrast to the environment, so it can be seen more easily.

• Be sure it is visible; adjust the height so it can be seen easily from a vehicle.

• Have an adequate budget, this is one area where it may be okay to spend a little more; signs tend to last a long time.

• Check with your local authorities on zoning considerations before you install a sign.

• Keep the future in mind. Is the sign easily customized? Or would you need to contact the sign company for changes?
