It wasn’t a hard choice for the Aquafest Committee to come up with the names of this year’s Aquafest 2009 Grand Marshals. Art and Karen Alessi were a natural choice to represent what Lake Stevens is all about – community service, commitment and hard work.

“The Alessi’s were chosen to be this year’s Grand Marshals because of their continued commitment to the Lake Stevens commu-nity,” Aquafest President Mike Friend said. “Karen has been instrumental in bringing many events that have resulted in national and even global recognition for our city. Art continues to support the community in his support of family based programs.”

The Alessi name is familiar to most in Lake Stevens. Karen was a City Council member and was instrumental in the creation of the Lake Stevens Rowing Club. The Rowing Club honored her last year by naming their new boat after her.

Both Art and Karen have spent count-less hours supporting this sport, which they love.

“Karen’s vision and support during her time on the Lake Stevens City Council, and since, has been fundamental to develop-ing the sport of rowing on Lake Stevens. Along with Art, they have contributed many hours over the years during regattas and other events to ensure the success of the Lake Stevens Rowing Club in fulfilling its goal of enabling the Lake Stevens com-munity to participate in this healthy activ-

ity,” Jon Brady, Lake Stevens Rowing Club said.

Karen has also served on the Arts Com-mission but her most treasured accom-plishment is the building of the existing Lake Stevens Library.

“The thing I am most proud of is that I built the library. That was a wonderful, wonderful project,” Karen said.

What is even more impressive is that not one penny came from taxpayer dollars, all of the funds were raised through commu-nity support and involvement.

“Our congressman came from Wash-ington D.C. to tell us how amazing it was that we didn’t spend one dollar that wasn’t raised for the library. The whole community chipped in,” Karen explained. “One little boy came every week and brought 10 cents for the library fund.”

The entire project was community driven including a $10,000 check from Hewlitt-Packard, a major company in Lake Stevens and Karen’s employer at the time.

The Alessis are the kind of people that make Lake Stevens the wonderful place it is. They will be honored at the Grand Parade on Saturday, July 25 at 1 p.m. Watch for them during the parade and give them a big thank you as they drive past!

“We feel blessed to have them as mem-bers of our community and proud to be recognizing their continued involvement,” Friend said.

Alessis named Grand MarshalsFriends and neighbors: Please join me as I recognize and thank

the many volunteers that have spen count-less hours preparing and planning this year’s Aquafest and to the community that supports this event. If it were not for the generosity of the sponsors and support of local organizations, we would not have such a wonderful event to host. For that, on behalf of the Aquafest committee, I say ‘Thank You’!

It has been the goal of this year’s Aquafest Committee to lay the groundwork for next year’s celebration of our community festival nearing its half century of existence as we “Rush to the Gold” this 49th year.

In keeping with the tradition of events that have stood the test of time, winning esteemed recognition as community favor-ites, our Water Ski Competition, Proud Pet Show and Grand Parade will continue to be at the core of our historic festival. Recognizing that all things change over the course of decades, and that our community has grown as has a number of families, interests and capabilities, we have added new,

fun and cost free venues sure to become annual favorites in the new era that will begin in 2010, some of which include a Celebrity Softball tournament, Car Crush, and Try Rowing.

Answering the call of a new era, our website, www.aquaf-est.org, has also been given a complete overhaul and includes a comprehensive list of events, schedules and links to our new presence on Facebook, My Space and Twitter so that you can follow your favorite event right up to the minute!

So, if you see an Aquafest Board member wearing a gold shirt, please take a moment to say ‘thanks’ for their tireless

effort. They have truly achieved “- the Gold.”

Aquafest 49 is guaranteed to be a celebra-tion worthy of closing a historic era. But is only a glimpse of greater things to come next year – our Golden Anniversary and the beginning of a new, exciting future for Aquafest and our community!

I look forward to seeing you there!Mike Friend

Entrants can choose to compete in the Open, Veterans (over 35), Junior 18 & Under and Junior 16 & Under events. In each cat-egory there are mens and womens singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

“I want to encourage people to come out and have some fun with a little competition mixed in”, said Tournament Director Jon Brady. “Most tournaments are held for the very serious competitor. This event is about giving a chance for everyone else to also have a try. Everyone should be able to find an event that suits them and hopefully we’ll see lots of family doubles teams out there as well. We’re also running a consolation draw so everybody gets at least two matches.”

Entry fees are $15 per person for each event with trophies being awarded. All prof-its from the tournament will be donated to support the Lake Stevens High School’s Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis Programs.

Bring treats to toss at the local docks as you tour Lake Stevens or participate from any private or public dock from Wyatt/Davies beach to The Cove!

All boat safety requirements will apply, and the parade will be monitored by the Lake Stevens Police Department.

If you’re not participating in the parade, pull out your lawn chairs and get a seat around the lake because after the fun and entertaining Boat Parade, the annual Fireworks display will begin.

The fireworks show begins at about 10 p.m. on Saturday night, July 25 and is al-ways a spectacular sight. Bring a blanket and lawn chairs down to North Cove Park for the best viewing, or catch the show from just about any vantage point around the lake.

Colorful explosions will light up the night sky over the lake for a 15 to 20 min-ute show.

The fireworks are set off from a dock towed out into the cove from the Lake Stevens boat launch.

You can also watch the fireworks from your boat, but for your safety and that of the fireworks technicians, please maintain a 500 foot clearance from the fireworks dock, a rule that is enforced by the Lake Stevens Police, Sheriff’s Dept. and Coast Guard.

The Children’s Parade is sponsored by BECU and is the Aquafest kick-off event on Friday night, July 24.

Each year the Children’s Parade attracts hundreds of kids and their parents.

Families, church groups, preschools, pets, bikes, scooters, wagons and small-motorized vehicles are all welcome to participate. Participants are encouraged to dress and decorate with this year’s theme - “Rush To Gold”.

As they are getting ready to go into the studio to do their 7th album in a series of releases, they are winding down their summer touring season making this one of the best years yet for the number of places they played at. Starting with the original three members one of which would drop out right away they went on to find a drummer and began the odyssey that has made them one of Seattle’s best working bands.

UltraViolet Uforia • 1 UltraViolet Uforia or uVu stands out among the masses as an original melodic rock band bringing out the best in sound experiences for your mind.

Shadrack • 12:30Led by Duncan Shadrack, the band has developed their own sound and continues to cultivate their personal style of Americana

quartet and was a vocalist in a funk band.Through all this, Duncan held on to his roots in country music and his love for writing

found a home when he created the band “Shadrack”. Vamping on everything from Van Halen to Van Morrison on guitar, vocals, and the rare mandolin, George’s focus has been on making music - great music – and he’s loved every minute of it. It was spring of ‘04 when a mutual acquaintance invited Tom out to audition as bassist for Shadrack.

The passion of expression and energy of the band’s music struck Tom immediately and when he was extended an invitation to join the following day, he wasted no time in accepting.
