PRESIDENT’S LETTER

NEIL EAD, MSN, CPNP

Dear Colleagues: I am pleased to invite you to the

23rd Annual APSNA conference, Kin-dling Synergy in Pediatric Surgical Care: Professional and Clinical Collaborative Practice-Monday, May26-Thursday, May 29, 2014, at the J.W. Marriot Desert Ridge Resort and Spa in Phoenix, AZ. We have hosted our meeting at this resort in the past and I am sure you find that it is one of the most beautiful locations we have visited. Phoenix holds fond memories for me because it was there that I began my long history of leadership with APSNA and is a place where many professional relationships and friendships were kindled. The symbol of the Phoenix which is our conference logo this year is a metaphor for trans-formation. This has special meaning this year because APSNA has taken major steps in transforming itself over the past year and this is reflected in the content and the events we have planned for you.

Our Program Chair, Raquel Pasarón, and her planning committee have organized our first Pre-Session this year. The topic will be within the professional practice domain entitled “Publishing Posters and Presentations: Where to Start and How to Get to your Goal.” We hope that you will arrange your travel so that you won’t miss this premier event. APSNA has made great strides in our global initiatives and we have invited international pre-senters in addition to the nationally known speakers you have come to enjoy in the past.

We are repeating our speaker exchange with the National Associa-tion of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) and this year past NAPNAP

President Susan N. Van Cleeve DNP, CRNP, will present “Addressing the Mental Health Needs of the Hospital-ized Pediatric Patient.” We are ex-panding on our partnership with NAP-NAP by adding a joint session entitled Transition Challenges in Chronic Care: Examples from Children with Intestinal Failure,” which will be presented at both of our annual meetings by Stacee Lerret, PhD, CPNP-AC/PC, and I. We continue to focus on leadership devel-opment and continue to draw from the

initiatives of other organizations through or participation in the Nursing Organization Alliance and the Nursing Alliance Leadership Academy and through that collaboration we have planned sessions on membership en-gagement, which will be addressed by a series of round table focus groups. It has been a major concern for me as President that we focus more on meeting Member need. Each of you will have an opportunity to share your ideas about how to improve services to the diverse members of our organi-zation. Additional round table focus groups will include clinical topics that such as sports injuries, ostomy care, bowel management, treatment of em-pyema and ulcerative colitis to name a few.

Our trauma SIG has submitted a position statement on Distracted Driv-ing and will be hosting a roundtable focus group to gather member input to determine how APSNA and the Trauma SIG can develop focused initi-atives related to this issue. We also have several social events planned. We will repeat the Silent Auction which was a bit hit last year and this will be sponsored by Kimberly-Clark and have planned a cocktail mixer prior to our

Founders Banquet, sponsored by AMT/ Last and most assuredly not least, our textbook Nursing Care of the Pediatric Surgical Patient has won the 2013 AJNBook of the Year Award. Congratu-lations to all of our Editors, Authors, and Contributors. We will be hosting an event to showcase this award at our Welcome Reception. Please don’t miss this and take some time to cele-brate this outstanding accomplish-ment. There is so much more to say that is beyond the scope of this intro-duction, but I would encourage you to peruse through the conference bro-chure and encourage all of you to join us this year. Neil Ead APNSA President 2013-2014

Where to Start and How to Get to Your Goal”

Premier APSNA Professional Workshop

The American Journal of Nursing (AJN) recognized the best nursing and healthcare publications of 2013 with an announcement of its Book of the Year Award recipients. Winners in 17 separate categories appear in the journal’s January issue. AJN, “the leading voice of nursing since 1900s,” is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. “AJN’s Book of the Year awards are sought-after by au-thors and publishers,” said Shawn Kennedy, MA, RN, AJN’s editor-in-chief. “As part of our mission to disseminate cred-ible, cutting-edge information, the awards give us the op-portunity to acknowledge high quality publications.” Since 1969, the AJN has been announcing its annual list of the best in nursing publishing. The AJNBook of the Year pro-gram is a prestigious competition that garners the atten-tion of its broad-based readership and half a million others who read the journal online or on the iPad. The most valu-able texts of each year are chosen by AJN’s panel of judg-es. Our own Nursing Care of the Pediatric Surgical Patient By Nancy Tkacz Browne, Laura M. Flanigan, Car-mel A. McComiskey, and Pam Pieper. 3rd edition. Burling-ton, MA, Jones and Bartlett Learning, won second place in the Child Health Category. Read what the judges said: Advancements in knowledge and technology are fast paced and lead to new and more complex surgical procedures. Growth in pediatric surgical subspecialties is exponential. This advanced growth demonstrates the need for ed-ucational resources to support this burgeoning field. The book is divided into chapters ranging from the uniqueness and needs of the pediatric surgical patient to the specifics of each subspecialty. The information is derived from the initial sharing of best practices by dedicated pioneer pedi-atric surgical nurses who had the vision to recognize pedi-atric surgical nursing as a unique specialty and had the need to share and collaborate to build a knowledge base from which to grow.

• Builds on the foundation of nurses’ commitment to best practice in this unique specialty.

• A resource for the pediatric surgical nurse, the pediat-ric surgical subspecialty nurse, and the general pediat-ric nurse.

• Includes diagnosis-specific teaching sheets for repro-duction in three languages from the American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association.
