April 27-30, 2015Ft. Lauderdale, FL

President’s Letter

3

Dear Colleagues:

It is my privilege and pleasure to invite you to the APSNA 24th Annual Scientific Conference, Pediatric Surgical Nursing: A Team Approach Across the Con-tinuum of Care. The conference is being held from Monday, April 27th through Thursday, April 30th, 2015 at the beautiful - and oceanfront - Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

With valuable input from the evaluations of last year’s conference attendees, our Program Chair, Kathy Leack, and the Program Committee have planned another excellent conference for us. We are continu-ing our speaker exchange with the National Associa-tion of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP). This year, our guest will be Deborah L. Torowicz, MSN, RN from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on the important topic of “Promoting Breastfeeding in the Surgical Infant”. This is also the second year of our joint session with NAPNAP, and APSNA’s very own Laurie Sands will be presenting a joint session with Maureen M. Kelly, MS, RN, CPNP from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill entitled “Collabora-tive Care: Management of Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease”.

I am especially pleased that Keith T. Oldham, MD has accepted our invitation to give a presentation enti-tled “Optimal Resources for Children’s Surgical Care”. Dr. Oldham is an attending pediatric surgeon and Sur-geon-in-Chief at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. He is also a past APSA president. I think you will find his talk thought-provoking.

We are trying something new for our Round Table Session - attendees will choose one of two condi-tions, either Hirschsprung’s Disease or Pectus Excava-tum, and rotate through various stations highlighting the continuum of care. This format should provide an opportunity for both education as well as sharing of best practices. The Poster Sessions provide yet an-other opportunity for information-sharing.

Another innovation this year - we are piloting a con-ference “app” to allow you to use your handheld de-vice or tablet to check the schedule, download hand-outs, and connect with fellow attendees. Please give it a try and let us know what you think!

Social activities once again include our Welcome Reception on Monday evening, the Founder’s Ban-quet on Tuesday (we hope to be beachfront for this one!) and the Membership Appreciation Mixer and Silent Auction on Wednesday evening. Based on your feedback, the Research Walk has been moved to Tuesday morning - won’t you join us for a walk/run on the beach, a limited edition APSNA T-shirt, and the opportunity to contribute to our Research Fund? One of the highlights of conference is to catch up with “old friends”, and make new ones. Whether you choose all, some, or none of these organized ac-tivities, or just meet up at the pool with your fellow pediatric surgical nurses or family, you are assured of having fun.

It is my hope that you will be able to join us at confer-ence, and that, once there, the experience and time away from work will afford you knowledge, network-ing, and respite- whatever it is you need. As I told our pediatric surgeon colleagues in their “On Call“ newsletter, I am confident that the information, con-tacts, ideas and enthusiasm you bring back from our Annual Meeting will improve your practice and the care you provide to your pediatric surgical patients and their families. Hope to see you at the beach!

With warm regards,

Chris McKennaAPSNA President 2014-2015
