News From the Principal
April/May Newsletter Spring is slowly coming and the snow is almost gone. Soon, the grass will be green and the trees will leaf out. We hope to be going outside at lunch time enjoying the outdoors soon. We might need to start out at the tennis courts before fields are ready, but whatever it takes to get outside! The quarter ended on March 27, so please be asking your student to see their progress report (report card) for third quarter by Thursday, April 5. If you want to see ahead of time, be sure to visit your parent portal site. Testing time has started for our students. Students have taken their NWEA tests and the MCA tests will occur later April and early May. It is important that our students get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast each day so their tests go well. We use the data to help schedule students in classes that best meet their needs. There will be no school on Wednesday March 28-April 2 for spring break. Hopefully, we won’t have any more snow days so that we don’t lose a spring break day, (March 28). April 11th will be a 1 pm early out for students. There also is no school Monday, May 28 for Memorial Day. Looking ahead, students are to be released for the summer June 1. This is a full day of school. On April 9, our choir will have a concert at LHS at 7:30 pm. There will be a band concert on April 26 at 7:30 here at FMS. April 30th brings us our annual Jazz concert at FMS with our Starlight strings, Sunrise Singers and our Jazz Band all performing, starting at 7:30 pm. Finally, our last concert of the year has our orchestra performing at LHS on May 21, again at 7:30. Reminder, there is an admittance fee to all concerts. For those who have earned a 3.7 grade point average for during the school year, we are having our annual academic breakfast in May. We also will also be honoring those chosen as our most improved students! We will again hosting this event in the Big Gym at Franklin. This is by invitation only. 6th grade students who do not go on the 6th grade trip, as well as all of our 7th and 8th grade students, will participate in our annual Kids in the Community Day, May 17th. This is an opportunity for our students to lend a helping hand and give something back to the community. We do things like raking lawns, washing windows, cleaning ditches, and picking up the parks, reading to elementary students, as well as many other tasks. The start of school for next year is scheduled for September 4. It will be fun to see all of our students back once again at our open house, set for August 29, starting at 4:30. I would like to wish our 8th graders the very best as they move on to Lincoln High School. I expect many to do great things as they further their education. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer, and look forward to seeing many of you again next year, as well as our incoming 6th graders.
Spring is on the way!

iPad Use @ FMSWe are about to complete the fifth year of our 1:1 iPad implementation. With that comes constant reflection and evaluation. We have decided that we are going make a couple of adjustments for the 4th quarter. Starting on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, students will not have iMessages available on their iPad. If you currently communicate with your child this way via the school iPad, it will become unavailable for the remainder of the year. We are experiencing high volume of traffic in the classroom and need to spend some time re-teaching proper use of the apps and being a good digital citizen.
K-9 Officer @ FMSPeriodically, we have the K-9 officer, Maz, come through the building. This practice has been in place for about a decade. We’ve used other service dog companies with the same intent and that is through deterrence and detection. As always, safety is of the utmost importance and this is a service available to us.
MCA TestingFrom April 9-May 8, we have MCA testing at FMS. Our students will be testing within their own communications, math, and science classes. The science test is for 8th graders only. Please use teacher websites, the FMS website, and our announcements page for specific dates. If your child will be gone during their testing time, please contact the office so we can find an alternative time.
For Current Updates:Follow us on Facebook or Twitter to see announcements, pictures of our students participating in amazing learning activities, and more! You may also bookmark the FMS Announcements page to see what is being announced at school daily.
Nurturing all students to become responsible & respectful witha passion for learning.

The Teen Vaping Trend – What Parents Need to Know
With the recent Monitoring the Future Study release indicating that nearly one in three 12th graders reported using a vaping device in the past year, it’s imperative that parents are informed of the potential dangers that can result from vaping.
https://www.juulvapor.com/packs/images/products/boxes/J1D1147-c32add57f95304192c5597e287a8a5c3.png
Vaping may make the transition to cigarette smoking easier in adolescence.
In a meta analysis of six studies, the findings concluded that the risk of smoking increases four times if a teen vapes versus a teen that does not. In another study of more than 2,000 10th graders, researchers found that one in five teens who reported a regular vaping habit at the start of the study smoked traditional cigarettes at least three times a month by the end of the study period. Another 12% of routine vapers smoked at least one day a month. By comparison, less than 1% of students who didn’t try vaping reported smoking even one day a month at the end of the study.
What Can Parents Do?
Make it clear to your son or daughter that you don’t approve of them vaping or using e-cigarettes, no matter what.
If you think your son or daughter is vaping, take a deep breath and set yourself up for success by creating a safe, open and comfortable space to start talking with your son or daughter. As angry or frustrated as you feel, keep reminding yourself to speak and listen from a place of love, support and concern. Explain to them that young people who use THC or nicotine products in any form, including e-cigarettes or vaporizers, are uniquely at risk for long-lasting effects. Because these substances affect the development of the brain’s reward system, continued use can lead to addiction (the likelihood of addiction increases considerably for those who start young), as well as other health problems.
You want your child to be as healthy as possible. Find out why vaping might be attractive to your son or daughter, and work with him or her to replace it with a healthier behavior.

Digital Citizenship& iPad Training for studentsOngoing!
8th grade has focused on potential dangers of social media & other issues with posting pictures online. They have discussed topics such as becoming “instafamous”, haters, trolls, & selfies.
7th grade has reviewed a variety of topics during their Tech Tuesday lessons. Their primary focus the past few weeks has been on safe online talk. They’ve also reviewed internet hoaxes as well as online tracking.
6th grade has been learning more about Cyberbullying & their rights as creators of content.
Continued support for 4th Quarter If your student is having difficulty finding the balance with digital media, consider: ● a “Parking Spot” - a place where the iPad (& possibly phone) go
after a set time, or homework is completed. ● Rewards or Consequences based on their usage & behavior. ● asking the school to add a “Restriction” which can block certain
apps or the App Store completely. It can be temporary or for the remainder of the school-year.

We have recently finished our unit on Manifest Destiny, where students studied the growth of the United States and the impacts that American expansion had on Native American tribes. We are now analyzing the causes of the Civil War, and how the expansion of our country led to controversy over the question of slavery. Students will be learning about the causes and impacts of the war through primary sources by Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and other lesser known individuals from the past. They will also impersonate people from the past in our Election of 1860 simulation, where they will consider the views of African Americans, Northern Workers, Western Farmers, Southern Planters, and Northern Factory Owners. In the near future, we will delve into the impacts of industrialization on America and research the experiences of immigrants between the 1840s-1900s. Students will engage in these experiences first-hand through an immigration simulation, where they will be given a role/passport of an immigrant.

After analyzing over 95 studies that examined the health benefits of fruits and vegetables, London researchers concluded that 800 grams of daily fruits and vegetables (roughly equivalent to 10 portions) was linked to the lowest risk of premature death and disease.
Exploring the Data:
You’ve likely heard the recommendation to eat at least 5 fruits and vegetables daily for best health. New advice is leaning more towards eating 5 servings of each.
More Fruits and Vegetables:
After analyzing data from almost 2 million people, researchers evaluated how many daily fruits and vegetables were consumed by the participants, as well as the type. The data indicates that 7.8 million deaths could be prevented if people regularly consumed 10 daily servings of fruits and vegetables.
Preventing Death:
Reduction in cancer deaths was associated with consumption of green, yellow and cruciferous vegetables. For reducing risk of CVD, researchers found that apples, pears, citrus fruit, green leafy vegetables, and cruciferous vegetables were associated with less risk.
