Editorial
Welcome this edition of the Kulin Update!
Seeding has started and school holidays are over! Hope everyone got good rainfalls over the past two weeks and seeding goes
smoothly.
“And Tell Mum...” was wildly successful over the ANZAC Day weekend, read Gens Media Release on page __ for more info. Gen
has also provided us with the background story that inspired the play.
Our showcase WAFL event West Perth vs Claremont is on this Saturday and I know there is a huge community effort being put
into the coordination of this. Great stuff so far guys!
This week we sadly say goodbye to the lovely Gen Whisson as she goes on maternity leave. On behalf of the entire Kulin Shire
staff and Councillors we would like to wish Gen and Ben all the best in the future. If I know Gen she will take this next step in life
in her stride, approaching parenthood as she would any project; preparing a well thought out plan, having plan B and C up her
sleeve and rising to any challenges with tenacity and poise. Through your five years at the Shire of Kulin you have certainly made
your mark Gen and you will be sorely missed.
This week we also say goodbye to Greg Hadlow, it’s his last week with us as CEO. We wish you all the best in your future
endeavours Greg, your time here at the Shire of Kulin is warmly appreciated by the entire community. For those that haven’t
checked out our NEW Shire Facebook Page you wouldn’t have seen this.....
“A few weeks ago we paid tribute to our long term serving CEO Greg Hadlow by emblazoning this quirky quote of his to
provide us with a lasting memory of his time here at the Shire of Kulin...what do you think the quote means?”
Happy Birthday

Kulin’s ANZAC spirit comes to life! By Gen Whisson For the three nights leading up to ANZAC Day, Kulin’s outdoor war memorial came alive as up to 90 people each night experienced the stories of men and women from Kulin, who found themselves coming to terms with the outbreak of World War One. The original theatre experience “And tell Mum…” was the creation of Perth based Scooplight Theatre, who in partnership with the Shire of Kulin, retold the impact WW1 had on their lives and their newly established farming community. The experience was based on official and personal historical records and recollections of the people who were living in and around Kulin before, during and immediately after the war. Thank you to those who donated personal mementos and shared their stories, community members who attended the research workshop and those who have assisted in research. This is the third time the Shire of Kulin has partnered with Scooplight Theatre. In 2013 & 2014, Kulin delivered the highly successful ‘Kulin Open Doors’ and ‘Kulin by Night’ heritage theatre experiences, which were named Winner of the 2014 WA Heritage Award for Outstanding Heritage Tourism Product. It was during these shows that the idea for "And tell Mum…”came about. In ‘Kulin by Night’ there was a touching scene where local boy Stan Bull and postman, Fred Johnson crossed paths in Kulin’s street. Stan only realised in this scene that he in fact did not physically make it back from the war, and that Fred is on his way to deliver the dreaded telegram to his family. We discovered more stories that had a direct connection to WW1 and although we were able to only briefly touch on one of these in ‘Kulin by Night", a wealth of other stories and characters had been put aside. There was Jack Magee the teenage farm-boy determined to enlist even though he is under-age; the local German storekeeper Mr Hessen who overnight became an enemy alien; the postman Fred Johnson who delivered the telegrams with the news no-one wanted to hear; the women who took on the work of the men; Stan Bull the young soldier who never returned but left behind a deeply personal journal of his experience, and the mother who lost her son Irven McIness plus many more! A small exhibition of Kulin WW1 memorabilia will remain on display at the Shire of Kulin until Tuesday 31st May 2016. Thank you to all those who have contributed items and images to the exhibition. A special thanks goes to Sharyn McAdam for her assistance with event coordination and also to the professional, highly acclaimed musicians Anthony and Andrew, who generously travelled from Melbourne to take part in the production and added such a special element to the shows. The show was also filmed by Black Cyclone and DVD copies of the performance will be available for purchase from the shire of Kulin over the coming months. “And Tell Mum…” was proudly supported by Lotterywest, Western Australian History Foundation, Kulin Bush Races, Kulin RSL, Kulin Community Bank and Black Cyclone Film and Production. The production was also part of the 2016 National Trust Heritage Festival Discovery and Rediscoveries, a national celebration of heritage. Image on cover: The “And tell Mum…” production in action.

William Stanley 'Stan' Bull By Gen Whisson The young Kulin farmer who inspired an original theatre production about the Great War 98 years after his death. William Stanley 'Stan' Bull was a young farmer who arrived in Kulin in 1911 with his family from Victoria and took up virgin farmland south of the town. Between 1911 and 1916, Stan helped his family to clear and work the newly established farm. He was an avid diary keeper, recording the family's challenges as early settlers, highlights and social activities with neighbours. He also kept a diary of his experiences at war, after he left Fremantle for the front aboard HMAT Port Melbourne A16 on 28 October 1916. It is the incredible detail contained in Stan's diaries which helped inspire “And tell Mum…”, an original theatre production created by Scooplight Theatre and the Shire of Kulin, which brought to life the personal experiences of the men and women from our Wheatbelt town who found themselves coming to terms with the outbreak of World War One. Two years ago, when we first embarked on this project to help share the town's Anzac story, we were looking for someone who could represent the men and women in our community who had been affected by the conflict, and who had left behind a record of their very personal experience. Stan's diaries certainly provided us with that, and his character was central to the retelling of his story and the story of his family, his friends, his town and his war. Holding Stan's diary and reading his story made me feel so connected to him. Through this project he became a real person to all of us working on the production, and I feel that I can relate to his experience in some way. We know how hard it is to lose one person from our small community today, to lose 60 people in a war would have been horrendous. Stan was killed in action near Corbie, France, on 24 April 1918. He was only 24 years old. Coincidently, the third and final “And tell Mum…” performance will fall on the 98th anniversary of Stan's death. Stan’s diary is on display at the Shire of Kulin along with other Kulin WW1 memorabilia until Tuesday 31st May 2016. An extract from the final entry in Stan Bull's diary: February 20th 1917, London Some excitement tonight. The names of the Draft were posted up and it includes most of the company. I am glad on the whole, for it will be a change and I think most of the lads are pleased too. Of course we know, from what returned men have told us, what to expect over there. It is quite probable we shall be blown out like the flame of a candle, as other good men have been before and will be in the future, before this rotten war is over. No doubt at all we shall be in the thick of the “big push” which I hope will decide and end the war. We have no idea when we are going, but we are warned for overseas. I am going to register this diary and Fred is going to send it home for me, but I intend to keep a diary as long as I am able to do so. We have a kit inspection tomorrow, to make sure we have only packed what we are supposed to take to France. But I am taking all my socks (about 12 pairs), a scarf and various other things. Returned lads say to take as much as you can carry. The boys are all shaving ready for the morning. I make my final entry in you, old book. Well, a long farewell William Stanley Bull. Kulin School Centenary 1916-2016
-Contributed by Sharyn McAdam
About two weeks before the centenary celebrations held in Kulin on 12th March I was fortunate to take a call from an ex student, Eddie O’Callaghan. Eddie was born in 1916 and he attended Kulin School in 1923 until 1929. Eddie is in the 1926 school class photograph that is permanently on display in the Kulin DHS front office. Eddie now resides in Bibra Lake and although he was unable to attend the event he was very pleased to share celebrating 100 years of age with the Kulin School. Also another ex student was located in the months leading up to the centenary event. The ex student was Audrey Townshend (nee Parsons) and her ‘Memories of Kulin’ are in this edition of the Kulin Update too.

National Youth Week Contributed by Tanya Dupagne
Camp Kulin hosted two activities for National Youth Week. The first was for Kulin teens, which involved turning our plain white wall at the Kulin Retreat into an amazing work of art. Sam from Mural Creations by Samantha Prentice worked with our local teens to create the masterpiece. Thanks to all the Kulin/Kondinin teens who came to help create it on Friday night - Hud, Daniel, Hamish, Joel, Josh, Kevin, Peter, Kate, Maddy, Khenan, Madison, Zali, Talecia, Lahkeisha, Charli & Tom
The second National Youth Week program was an excursion we hosted for the Narembeen CRC, with a group of teens travelling to Camp Kulin to spend the day testing out some of our activities.
Thanks to everyone who took part in both events, and to the Department of Local Government and Communities for providing the funding to make them happen!
