Noel Mason

Just a quick couple of points and reminders from me this issue as we hurtle headlong into another busy time of the year.

There are some significant health

and welfare programs that occur

each September that I urge you

to consider.

R U OK? (14th Sept) really

encourages us to check-in with

others and ask the question, R U

OK? Simple but effective

prevention in a mental health

setting; and Royal Lifesaving

Australia (RLA) commences two

campaigns urging us to consider

what action we can take to

prevent drownings and to learn

first aid.

This year significant messages

around older swimmers, inland

waterways and toddler drownings

remind me of the terrible impact

that occurs in families suffering

this usually preventable tragedy.

The other RLA message this

season is that 13% of road

fatalities are preventable when

simple first aid is known - check

breathing, open airways and place

in a recovery position; is the basic

first aid that can save lives.

Living country can bring difficulties,

but simple things can make it safer

for us all. If your skills and

knowledge isn’t what it could be,

switch onto these messages and

take action.

The Shire of Kulin, along with the 41 other Wheatbelt local governments, is working towards an

integrated Wheatbelt Secondary Collector Freight Route project. The aim of the project is to

develop an interconnected road network for heavy haulage across Local Government Authorities so

that freight can be transported across the region linking the "first or final" mile to and from

Wheatbelt towns and farms. The goal is to concentrate heavy traffic on specific routes (local roads)

which will feed onto Main Roads. These roads have been selected to fit into specific criteria so as

not to duplicate existing heavy vehicle routes. The upgrading of the "secondary collector routes",

will encourage operators to move onto them ASAP and allow for a more concentrated focus on

maintenance programs on this network, which will remain a Shire responsibility. It will still be

individual local government responsibility to maintain or upgrade any connecting roads.

To achieve this, the Shires intend to upgrade the selected local roads to a minimum standard and

have consistent RAV ratings along routes. This will enhance safety on our roads and alleviate the

interaction between heavy traffic and local traffic.

Currently, Shires are analysing the roads identified in this project to ascertain exactly what work

needs to be done to upgrade the routes. This will allow us to calculate a total amount for the

required funding. We expect the cost to be substantial and will be seeking Federal funding.

We are working in collaboration with our Regional Road Groups (Wheatbelt North and Wheatbelt

South), Regional Development Australia (Wheatbelt), Main Roads WA and the Western Australian

Local Government Association to develop a business case to have this project added to the

Infrastructure Australia priority list, which will enhance our ability to attract funding.

Thank you to everyone who made it to the first busy bee on Sunday 10th!! The Sundowner was really fantastic and a nice way to end the day!!

There will be Busy Bees every weekend leading up to KBR and Busy Bees at the FRC in the days leading up to KBR too! We'd love to see you there, keep your eye out for updates and information!!

www.facebook.com/kulinbushracescommittee

It gives us great pleasure to share with you via the Kulin Update some of our latest Volunteer Profiles!!!

Kulin is the Number #1 Helper Hotspot in W.A. Modesty measures high here too Jill Brewis "I am a 'lightweight' volunteer, but have been on hand every year bar 2013 (when cruising NZ). I am always willing to help out but not involved in all the planning, busybees etc. In the early years my involvement was all about rosters for Art Group Friday nights - loved the Art Show. Who could forget the fantastic beach chairs auctioned off for RFDS? Also rosters for Netball and P&C. Our first event was very much a Back-to-Kulin, the chance to catch up with old friends & make new ones. I recall making up 16lt of lemonade for P&C then the challenge of carrying those 8 x 2lt containers all the way from the car park to the track! In those early years I spent the Sunday working at the Woolshed. Cars & bikes would be lined up waiting for fuel & the shop would be jam packed with people well into the afternoon. Never heard a negative comment, always enthusiasm for a return trip. The basic format remains but KBR weekend has certainly kept pace with changing times. In latter years I have enjoyed volunteering in 'the bank' - our little regulars laugh a lot We as a community certainly know how to put on an event - and I am always proud to be a small part of the big picture."

Janna Lockyer Why Do You Volunteer? I volunteer so I can give back to the community that is so giving to me. It helps me to also feel more connected to the community and I love seeing others benefiting from the Event.

What do you do? I first started as the person responsible for looking after the Curtin Volunteer Group for the Busy Bee weekend and the Event. I continue to do this and have recently added the secretary roll.

What do you love about being a KBR volunteer? I love being able to bring the skills from my work background to help such an awesome organisation and fun event. Seeing all our hard work for the enjoyment of others, is also a great feeling.

What is your best Memory? My best memory is the Busy Bees and seeing all the kids pitching in to help then off having fun as a group. Seeing the future of our event growing up and learning all these skills.

Edwina Bradford "I volunteered for my first Bush Races in 2012 when I was persuaded by some of the locals down the pub to work a shift on the wine bar, an idea I was immediately sold on when I heard mention of a complimentary wine when I'd knock off. Even though I had no idea what to do, the other volunteers were so friendly and helpful and I soon got into the swing of things, serving drinks and opening the cans before I handed them over , taking money and re-stocking when we were low. Before I knew it my shift was over and I found that I had really enjoyed the laughs and the banter with the locals and visitors. The rest of the evening was spent enjoying the music, getting to know more of the volunteers and hearing about the tradition of the Kulin Bush Races. Volunteering has been something I have enjoyed every year since doing bar shifts or selling tickets. My favourite memory is of that first year and watching the fireworks with my now husband who is also a KBR volunteer. Making sure we are together watching the fireworks each Bush Races is now a tradition of our own. I volunteer because I like the feeling of comradery and being part of a team that invest in our community. I love meeting new people and catching up with old friends, and I love that anyone can be volunteer it doesn’t matter who you are, what your age or where you’re from."

Volunteer tickets are at the Kulin Post Office now!! Pre-sale KBR tickets are available online until 30th Sept. Price increase is effective from 1st October!!! www.kulinbushraces.com.au Thank you everyone 6,7,8th Oct #kbr17 Exhilarating, action packed, all ages weekend.
