Ever since the early 2000’s this generation has had a
devastating problem: texting while driving. While
driving down the road you hear your phone buzz and
you decide to answer it, but that’s your first mistake.
Thousands have lost their lives due to this modern
technology. You promise yourself you’ll never do it,
then the next thing you know you’re taking glimpses of
it, and then you start text messages because you’re
bored while driving! That text can wait and if the person
you’re communicating with cannot understand that
then you should rethink your priorities. Not only has
this cost thousands of innocent lives, but it’s injured just
about as many. Paralyzed, broken bones, memory loss,
car wrecks, and more substantial injuries have occurred
because of this bad little habit. So let’s ask the five
simple questions: who, what, when, where and why?
Who? It seems like everyone does it. Some people even
brag about it! Claiming they’re safe when they text and
drive and that they can easily focus on a 16 ounce piece
of modern technology while you’re behind the wheel of
a 2,500 pound screaming metal death trap. What?
What is texting and driving? It’s not just texting
anymore; this term has a broader meaning. Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, Vine, and even Trivia Crack is
considered to be a distraction when you’re in the
classroom or supposed to be listening to your parents;
so why would you do this behind the wheel of such a
dangerous piece of machinery? When? Day and night
from dusk till dawn it seems like you can always see a
cell phone light on someone’s face as they drive by, or
their head down as you pass them. It’s becoming a
hobby, but I would like to call it a very bad habit.
Where? Here’s a little background for you; Texting was
designed for the deaf so that way they could
communicate like a phone call. Somehow while we
were growing up it became more convenient to talk to
someone. It was all the urgency of a telephone call but
none of the haste. Then texting became a pointless
conversation. “What’s up?” became the most asked
question. Their response; “nothing.” What would you
have done if the one you were texting said “Nothing
much just driving, you?” would you say “lol” or would
you not reply because you know the value of their life?
Texting happens everywhere, we need to change that
especially when it’s behind the wheel. Why? This
question is for you to answer. Maybe some of you feel
rebellious or cool that you have your license and what
you do with it, but there’s nothing cool about being
irresponsible behind the wheel. Why do you text while
driving? To reply to your mom before she yells at you?
Call her or text her before you get in that car. I know for
a fact your parents would be happier yelling at you
because you didn’t reply rather than picking out your
grave plot and casket color. Your life is worth putting
the phone down.
Have you ever seen a parent, friend or someone you look up to do something dangerous and vowed to never do
that? Did you ever stick to that vow? Here’s a promise you need to make and keep. Understand that it’s more
than just a spelling error in a text message that can happen when you’re texting and driving. The end result can be
devastating.

Many of you have heard about the Chess Club being started, but do not
know much about it. These students do not consider Chess Club as an
official club, but simply love to play the game. “We’re just a bunch of
kids that like to hang out and play chess,” says chess
player Alicia Lawrence. We visited the Chess Club to
see what goes on at their meetings and are going to
reveal the insights to you.
There are not any official
members in Chess Club. They
welcome anyone who wants to
play a game or two of chess.
The co-presidents of Chess Club
are Christian Burden and Ben
Leis. These two lovely young
men said they would love to
teach anyone wants to learn.

As the 2014-2015 school year winds down to a close, many people are faced
with the question of summer break. For some, that means evenings on the
beach and vacations across the United States while others think of goodbyes
and move-in dates. For most of this year’s senior class, this will be the last few
days they have of freedom in Lima, Ohio before heading to the work force and
college. Read on for my advice on this week’s subject: outside the walls of Allen East!
Ms. Advice,
I will be moving to Illinois for my college on August 29,
but I admit that I really don’t have any money. Should I
get a summer job right before moving or wait until I’m
in Illinois?
Sincerely,
Broke Bill
Dear Broke Bill,
GET A JOB! It’s never too late to start earning money
and places like McDonalds and area campgrounds are
always hiring. Sometimes, the employer will even agree
to hold a spot for you every summer when you return
for summer break.
Ms. Advice,
I’m an awful cook and my parents signed me up for the
one meal a day plan at college to save money. That
means I’ll have to cook at least once a day, but I burn
everything I touch. What should I do?
Sincerely,
Smokin’ Sammy
Dear Smokin’ Sammy,
Don’t worry; I can’t cook either, but I’ve found that a
coffee pot is man’s best friend. All you have to do is
load it up with water and plug the contraption in.
Instead of placing a coffee pot under the water spout,
set a bowl beneath it and use that hot water in Ramon
noodles, Mac and Cheese, or Jello mix. And wah-lah,
you have lunch!
Ms. Advice,
I’m moving to Dayton this fall for college and my mom
is not looking forward to it. She cries every day about
me leaving. My sister went to a local college as a
commuter so she was always home. Since I will be
living about two hours away, how often should I come
back?
Sincerely,
Wandering Will
Dear Wondering Will,
This is exciting! You’ll be living on your own for the first
time EVER and it is bound to be a new experience. My
advice to you is to stay at your college for at least the
first six weeks, making sure to pay regular phone calls
back home. That way, you can get acquainted to college
life and settle in.
Ms. Advice,
I’m a graduating senior and I still don’t know what I
want to do for the rest of my life! I haven’t applied for
college, so I’ve started interviewing for a job. What
should I do now?
Sincerely,
Perspiring Persephone
Dear Perspiring Persephone,
I am a strong supporter of post-secondary education,
and I would strongly advise that you get involved as
quickly as possible. For now, though, I would settle into
a job until the next opening (winter term) at college and
get a little experience in the workforce. Then, I would
apply to college in the field of my dreams!

On Friday morning, all the soon to be graduates enjoyed a nice breakfast, and then went to the gym
to practice. The gym was filled with shaky hands, and sweaty palms. The class of 2015 was very
nervous to step out into the real world, and even more nervous about tripping on their way up to
snatch their diploma. Below are some pictures of the graduation practice on Friday.

May 24, 2015 marked a very special day for the class of 2015. The girls scurried around making sure their hair looked flawless
for this memorable day while the guys buzzed around looking for their dress shoes. Every single student in the class of 2015
deserved a perfect day. They have worked extremely hard for 13 years and this is the day to congratulate their success.
Congratulations class of 2015! We will miss you greatly.
