President’s Message

There are many reasons why our members have joined our organization including camaraderie, creative outlet and of course learning. Many outstanding opportunities to learn are available at SRAL. We are lucky that our members are such talented artists who are willing to lead groups such as Pastel, Briggs, OPAL, Collage Mixed Media, to mention a few. In these group sessions Leaders teach techniques, organize sharing and critique sessions, create environments conducive to bringing out your creativity in a common space and give us time to enjoy each other’s artwork. A special thank you to all our group leaders! If you have not been to any of the groups, or it has been a long time, I suggest you investigate all that SRAL offers at our website. CLICK HERE to go to the SRAL website) . Our show season is still underway. The Southwest Show is at Canoa Hills until April 30th. Thank you, Arlene Szypulski, for chairing this show! Deanna Brooks and Linda Sparks are our co-chairs for the Annual Member’s Show in May. Big kudos to both Deanna and Linda for continuing our tradition of the Annual Member’s Show. Of course, thank you to all other members who were show chairpersons for our other shows this season-Nan Lux, Rich and Altie Metcalf, Nanci Sheppard and moi! There were also many volunteers who helped with each of these shows and I take my hat off to all for their generosity of time and efforts. As it is officially Spring, and we are doing all our cleaning and you may want to donate to SRAL. If your donation is less than $100 in value, you may just leave it on the table under the large bulletin board in the Studio. If you have an item than is valued less than $100 but it is large in size, like furniture, please contact a Board member before leaving your donation. All donations over $100 in value need to get Board approval of acceptance. Please contact Nancy Wesorick at [email protected] if you have a large donation.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

ABSTRACT BRIGGade

The next monthly meeting of the Abstract BRIGGade Group will be on Friday, April 12th, at 9:30 AM in the Studio. Besides catching up on what’s happening locally and share info on shows, workshops, etc., we will focus on our own art work and critique pieces as desired. There is no “challenge” for this month. Of special interest: a new member, Susan McKelvy, will demo doing an abstract painting with pastels. Susan is a Signature Member of the Colorado Pastel Society and received many awards with them in the past. Do come and share in the friendships and enthusiasm that makes this group so special! Everyone is welcome! Nan Lux 520-820-8031

COLLAGE MIXED MEDIA The Collage Mixed Media Group meets on the First and Third Wednesdays of every month in the Main Studio unless there is a class being presented and we then meet in Studio A.

This is currently an informal group meeting from 9:30 to 11:30 for all who are interested in collage and mixed media fine art.

DRAW, DOODLE AND TANGLE GROUP

The Draw, Doodle, and Tangle Group meets every Wednesday in the Main Studio from 1:00 to 3:00. The intent of our group is to provide a venue for anyone interested in developing, improving, and challenging their creative spirit through drawing (basic pencil and ink techniques), doodling (random lines and shapes), and tangling (repetitive patterns, i.e., Zentangle®).

FIGURE DRAWING

The Figure Drawing group is in full swing. We hire models, sometimes nude, to pose for us in the studio. We meet the first Saturday of each month through May. Any medium, any level are welcome. We charge $5 for each artist for the session to help pay for the model. We meet 9am to noon. Please consider joining us. It is a fantastic way to learn and a terrific value. Hope to see you there. Any questions about this program please contact Nanci Sheppard at [email protected] or (541) 519 3780.

OIL PAINTERS of the ART LEAGUE (OPAL)

OPAL holds art sessions on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays from October to April, 9am to noon, in the SRAL main studio. There is no cost to participants – all instructors volunteer their time to help the artists. The group is open to all Art League members interested in pursuing their love of creating fine art with oil paints Any member who wants to learn more about oil painting is certainly welcome to attend the sessions – we would love to have you. For more information about the OPAL group go to Opal .

PASTEL GROUP NOTE CHANGE The SRAL Pastel Group will be meeting on the first and third Tuesdays of each month

during the summer in the main studio from 9 am - 12 pm. Our members meet to support each other, to work independently, to share their knowledge, tips and techniques and to make friends. Come join us and discover the great properties this medium has to offer. The following website does a fabulous job of introducing soft pastels - https://www.mallgalleries.org.uk/learning/resources/history-pastels Jean Schwafel will monitor this group during the summer.

PLEIN AIR

We are up and running with the Plein Air Painters. We meet Thursday mornings...any medium, any level, to paint scenes all over Southern Arizona. We have a great schedule on our website under Groups/Plein Air. We also post the monthly schedule in the studio. We hope to see more artists join us, even if you have never painted plein air before. Anyone can enjoy new places and the outdoors because we have so much fun. We often have lunch after the session and provide carpools at the meet point. Any questions about this program please contact Nanci Sheppard at [email protected] or (541) 519 3780.

PORTRAIT

The Tuesday afternoon portrait group needs models. Sit in a comfortable chair for twenty minutes, take a break, talk to Artists and visit. From one to three. Usually four sets on the same pose. We’d love to draw or paint you.

PRINT GUILD

The Printmakers Guild is in its 8th year and meets in the SRAL Studio on the fourth Thursday in September, October, and January through May. Only one meeting is held for November-December, usually the week after Thanksgiving. All SRAL members are welcome. Karen Keim is the Printmakers Guild Coordinator. [email protected]

WATERCOLOR

The SRAL Watercolor Group meets on Fridays from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. This is an informal group where individuals develop and paint their own watercolor pictures. We do not critique, but if you come to a place where you want some input there is always someone to ask. We welcome beginners as well as those who have painted for years. The SRAL Library also has many books on Watercolor for your reference. Bring your name tag, paints and join us!
