Workers were putting the final touches on the siding of the new Heartland Holtellate last week in Lamont. The new facility is expected to open sometime in July.

Michelle PinonEditor

“It’s a chance of a life-time; in a lifetime ofchance.”

Those are just a coupleof the lyrics in DanFogelberg’s song ‘RunFor The Roses’ whichpays tribute to theKentucky Derby, and itshorses.

Just like the KentuckyDerby is the crown jewelof horse racing, localcowboy Eddie Shepelsays the Lamont Bull-A-Rama is the crown jewelof the bull riding circuit, and he has his sights seton the coveted championbelt buckle.

“It’s every cowboy’sdream to win a buckle.”Ironically, up until a yearago, Shepel had neverstepped inside the show

ring let alone sit atop abull.

“It’s a bit of a funnystory,” chuckles Shepel, who has worked inLamont for the past three

years as a project manag-er at Allied Paving.Shepel went to Bull-A-Rama with a group offriends as well as hisboss Fred Wishloff nick-named “The Godfather”who was celebrating his

65th birthday. “I said Ican do that, and told himI’m gonna ride in nextyear’s Bull-A-Rama.”

However, what startedout as a joke, has turnedinto a serious endeavourfor Shepel, who hasjoined the rodeo club outof Lakeland College, where he trains weekly.Shepel, is also a memberof the World ProfessionalBull Riding Association,Bull Riders of Canada,Lakeland RodeoAssociation, and theWild Rose RodeoAssociation.

While the 28-year-oldis young by most stan-dards, but not in therodeo world, he is one ofthe older competitors. Most of the riders arebetween 16 and 22 yearsof age. Even his physicalstature, 5’10” 200 lbs. is a

disadvantage in thesport as many top bullriders are smaller; butShepel doesn’t let itaffect his mindset or getin the way of his goalswith his newfound sport.

Just seven months ago,Shepel was playingdefensive back with theLloydminster footballclub, that won a nationalchampionship againstthe Toronto Titans by ascore of 25-19.

Shepel is now takinghis fierce and fearlessattitude onto the rodeocircuit and is determinedto have a good showingin Lamont and through-out the rodeo season.

His ultimate goal is toqualify for the CanadianFinals Rodeo. “I hope tobe in it next year.”

His first big accom-plishment was getting

on the back of a bull andriding it. That happenedlast October inVermilion. The onlything he prayed for wasnot to go over the headof the bull and get hisface trampled on.

Fortunately, that didn’thappen. “I almost madeit to the bell,” said Shepelwho said that achieve-ment in and of itself wasa “big accomplishment”in his eyes, and has beenthe catalyst to furthertraining with the rodeoclub, attendance atworkshops, and manyhours reviewing andstudying video footagefrom various profession-al rodeos to improve hisskills and techniques.

But there is no substi-tute for personal experi-ence. “The best way tolearn is to get on and

ride,” says Shepel. Headds that members ofthe bull riding communi-ty have been beyondhelpful to him.“Everyone wants you tosucceed.”

Shepel can’t really puthis finger on why he hassuch a burning desire tosucceed as a bull rider, except that as a youngboy he dreamed of beinga cowboy. “I want to bethe best.”

While desire anddetermination can onlytake you so far, Shepelhas the heart to make ithappen. “It’s my des-tiny.”

Perhaps, as written inFogelberg’s song, “Yourfate is delivered. Yourmoment’s at hand.”

Yes, the rumours are true. I am leaving theHumboldt Journal/East Central Trader.

I have two weeks left here, to train ournew editor - Andrea Nicholl, and to saygoodbye to the job that has eaten up most ofmy waking hours over the past 10 years.

It’s a difficult job, being the editor of thenewspaper in a community of this size. There are certain expectations, certaindemands made of the person in this posi-tion, and the job itself comes with some bag-gage. I’ve been waiting for years to sharesome of the ins and outs of the job, but couldnever justify a column on it. But at thispoint, it’s now or never, so here goes.

• People expect an editor to be psychic. While I have to say that after 12 years inHumboldt, I have a pretty good idea aboutwhat goes on here, I don’t hear everything. If someone has news they want in the paper, just call and tell the editor. He or she is onlyhuman, and usually without psychic pow-ers of any kind.

• As an editor, not only do you have to tryto learn about pretty much everything thatgoes on, you have to write about it.Sometimes, people are happy with yourwork. And other times, they are really not.The unhappy ones are the vocal ones, usual-ly. Sometimes, the happy ones express theirthanks; it’s too bad that doesn’t happenmore often.

• Every mistake an editor makes is pub-lic. And it’s guaranteed that someone willnotice every spelling mistake, every mis-placed modifier, every wrong address andfeel the need to comment on it, so thick skindevelops over time.

• Some consider an editor public proper-ty. Calls at home, even while on vacation, to“just come and take some pictures” or tocomplain about a story are not uncommon.

• Editors and reporters work while every-one else is at play. Hockey games, banquets, dance recitals, drama productions - otherpeople are there in their leisure time. Butreporters are actually on the clock. And yes,it is work.

• The public only sees half the job you do.There is a very public side to reporting andediting, and another side that’s behind thescenes. The public sees us running around, talking to people and grabbing photos. Butthey don’t see us back at the office, down-loading photos and writing up the event wewere just at. They see the end result, butsomehow, many think we just pull all thatout of thin air in a few minutes. Good storiestake time to write. And I like to write goodstories.

• As an editor, you have to take the flakyou deserve, and deflect that you don’t.

• The job involves stirring the pot, whichcan result in positive change but negativefeedback, and makes the job uncomfortablesometimes, but rewarding in the end.

• You have to accept you will make somepeople angry, especially those going tocourt. People up on charges really don’t likehaving their name in the paper for some rea-son. For instance, one woman facing drugtrafficking charges came into my office a few

years ago and demanded I stop printing hername. I told her if she didn’t want her namein the paper, there was a simple solution.“Don’t sell drugs.” She called me somenames and stomped out. Her name keptgoing in the paper and she was eventuallyconvicted.

• As the years go by, an editor will knowmore and more people in the community. That can be good, and it can be bad. Thegood part is, you know who to talk to aboutpretty much any subject. The bad part is thatmakes it difficult to remain objective.

• You have to go into work every daywith a plan of attack, and be willing tothrow that plan completely out the windowif something major comes up.

• Ambition is one thing, and compassionis another. It’s been my goal, in this job, toput the latter before the former. I hope I suc-ceeded.

Members of theLamont Fire Departmentwere busy shootinghoops on April 11, whenthey had a fun gameagainst the Lamont HighSchool Senior Boys bas-ketball team.

The players all had agood time, with the boysfrom the high schooleventually coming outon top with a score of 44- 30. Although the firedepartment seemed tohave the initial advan-tage of height, the schoolwas eventually able totriumph with theirendurance through thesecond half of the game.

"We enjoy getting out,and just interacting withpeople" explains fireteam member Scott

Calder. Calder says thatthe fire department hadno expectations whenthey went into the game, but were just looking forsomething different forthe department to do.

"Last year we tried toget a game together, butit didn't really pan out"added Calder. This yearthe fire department hadthe benefit of having acouple members whoattend the high school, and it was because of oneof these members thatthe game was a go thisyear.

High school student, and department memberKelleigh Scott hadapproached him regard-ing the possibility of thegam, and the fire depart-ment was "more thanhappy to jump at theopportunity."

Although the firedepartment was able tohold out till the bitterend, there was no doubtthat they were gettingquite the workout."There's a few of us whohaven't played basket-ball for quite a while"said Calder who alsomentioned that therewas one member of theirteam who hadn't playedsince 1984.

All in all, Calder saysthe Department's teamwas quite happy withthe game, and looks for-ward to any other oppor-tunities they may have toplay with the schoolteams.

"We went in strictly tohave a good time, and Ithink we've achievedthat."

Organizer Steven Trach comes from the St. Paularea and has been doing these pony races with hischildren for a few years now, with his daughter justhaving her first race this past March. “My son is five, and he’s done it for four years now in St Paul”

Trach says the main motivation for the event is sim-ply to please the crowd and give the children achance to get involved in the rodeo but in a muchsafer method. “It’s just like the adult pony racing, buton a much smaller scale,” explains Trach.

The ponies used for the children are only about 400- 550 pounds he adds, saying that they are actuallyfairly quiet.

Although this is the first time the event is comingto Lamont, it is quite popular in other rodeos andevents. “People like watching kids. Some of our clubmembers have kids, and we thought it would bepretty neat.”

The event overall will probably only last around 15minutes, with each child taking their turn on one ofthe ponies. Trach estimates there will be around sixor eight ponies during the event.

A long time attendee of the Bull-A-Rama, he saysthat if the demand is there, and it goes well, he wouldlook forward to bringing the event in the future aswell.

“We will have somegreat door prize giveaways, the names will bedrawn at the end of theday and you do not needto be at the Bull-A-Ramato win,” says eventorganizer Jen Shaw.

Also being put on byPulse entertainment is aTalent show starting at2:00 pm for kids betweenthe ages of three and 12,and a $2 western themedphoto booth. There will also be a craftarea for the kids featur-

ing an opportunity tobuild your own farm, aswell as colouring activi-ties.

“We wanted the eventto be more of a familyevent where parentscould bring their kids, and the kids weren’tbored walking aroundwhile mom shopped. Wewanted to be able to haveitems available for every-one to enjoy.”

Shaw adds that theyare no longer acceptingvendors for the tradeshow, with the exceptionof any “very unique ven-dors”.

There are already a fewvendors who will be sell-ing items that are quiteout of the ordinary, including one whomakes home decor out ofsaw blades and barbedwire.

Although PulseEntertainment is knownmostly for their DJ andPhotography work, theyhave also done a bit ofevent planning. “This isthe first trade show thatwe are putting together”explains Shaw.

So far, she says ven-dors have not been hardto find, because many of

them knew about theevent already. They wereall excited about theevent and have beenawesome to work withthus far, said Shaw.

“We have searched forvendors that will add aunique twist on theevent, and our goal wasto get the communityinvolved in the event asmuch as possible, andgive back”

While there is nocharge to get into thetrade show, attendees areasked to bring a dona-tion for the food bank.
