World Vocations Day Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, When you see images of “Christ, the Good Shepherd,” usually you see Jesus with a few sheep or lambs around Him, with one in His arms or on His shoulders. It is a tender image, and one that gives us comfort. Jesus is the Good Shepherd that lays down His life for His sheep. We are His sheep. Now, if you think about it, this is not exactly a compliment to us. Are sheep smart animals? No, not really. Are they beauti-ful animals? No, not particularly. But, we as sinful human beings are not always smart either. In fact, we make a lot of illogical decisions. Sin is the most illogical thing we can ever do, because we offend the One who loved us into being and sustains our being. But the good news is that the Good Shepherd loves us, and is patient with us. The sheep know the voice of the Shepherd, Jesus tells us. The Catholic Church teaches that Jesus left the Church with human shepherds who share in His definitive work of pastoring the flock. These are the popes, the bishops, and the priests. (Deacons, while ordained ministers, are not pastors, but they assist the pastors in the difficult work of caring for the flock.) As shepherd of Athens, I have three main jobs: to teach; to sanctify; and to govern. My first job is to teach the good news of Jesus, the teachings of the holy Catholic faith, and the way to live your faith in Christ. My second job is to sanctify, which means to give drink to the flock with baptism, to feed the flock with the Body of Christ; to heal the flock through confession and anointing; and to strengthen the flock with Confirmation and holy matrimony. My last job is to govern. This certainly means administration — the day-in and day-out duties of the parish — but this also means faithful service to the flock: making myself available for the flock for their pastoral needs, visiting people who need Christ, and writing things that hopefully lead the flock closer to Christ. The reality is that the work of the shepherd is difficult. This is why we have some-what of a crisis in vocations. Today is World Vocations Day, and I want to encourage our youth to think and pray about what God might be calling them to. There are a lot of sheep and not enough shepherds. We also need good nuns to help teach the sheep. Today is also an opportunity for you to pray for your shepherds – that we may lead you to verdant pastures of sanctity and restful waters of divine grace.

Día Mundial de la Vocaciones
Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Cuando vemos imágenes de “Cristo, el Buen Pastor”, usualmente vemos algu-
nas pocas ovejas o corderos alrededor Suyo, y una oveja en Sus brazos o sobre Sus hombros. Es una tierna imagen, y muy reconfortante. Jesús es el Buen Pastor que da Su vida por Sus ovejas. Nosotros somos Sus ovejas. Ahora, si ponen atención, esto no es exactamente un elogio para nosotros. ¿Son las ovejas inteligentes? No, no realmente. ¿Son unos bellos animales? No, no particularmente. Pero nosotros, como seres humanos pecadores tampoco somos siempre inteligentes. De hecho, nosotros hacemos muchas decisiones ilógicas. Y lo más ilógico que podemos hacer es pecar, porque ofendemos a quien nos amó hasta la muerte y a quien nos susten-ta. Pero la buena nueva es que el Buen Pastor nos ama, y es paciente con nosotros.
Las ovejas reconocen la voz del Pastor, nos dice Jesús. La Iglesia Católica en-seña que Jesús dejó a la Iglesia con pastores humanos que comparten Su definitivo trabajo de pastorear su rebaño. Estos son los papas, los obispos, y los sacerdotes. (Los diáconos, aunque son ministros ordenados, no son pastores, pero ayudan a los pastores en la difícil tarea de cuidar el rebaño.) Como pastor de Athens, tengo tres trabajos principales: enseñar; santificar; y gobernar. Mi primer trabajo es enseñar la Buena Nueva de Jesús, las enseñanzas de la santa fe Católica, y la manera de vivir la fe en Cristo. Mi Segundo trabajo es santificar, que significa dar de beber al rebaño con el bautismo, alimentar al rebaño con el Cuerpo de Cristo; sanar al rebaño me-diante la confesión y la unción; y fortalecer al rebaño con la Confirmación y el santo matrimonio. Mi último trabajo es gobernar. Esto realmente significa administrar — día a día los asuntos de la parroquia — pero también significa servir fielmente al re-baño: estar disponible para sus necesidades pastorales, visitar a aquellas personas que necesitan a Cristo, y escribir cosas que (esperamos) guíen al rebaño y lo acer-quen a Cristo. La realidad es que el trabajo del pastor es difícil. Es por eso que tenemos una crisis de vocaciones. Hoy es el Día Mundial de las Vocaciones, y yo quiero animar a nuestros jóvenes a a que piensen y oren por que talvez pueda ser que Dios los esta llamando . Hay muchas ovejas y muy pocos pastores. También necesitamos buenas monjas que ayuden a enseñar a las ovejas. Hoy también tienen la oportunidad de orar por sus pastores — que los guiemos al verde pasto de la santidad y a las pláci-das aguas de la divina gracia.

Sidewalk Counselor/Prayer Partner Training, May 3, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at St. Joseph the Worker, 5075 FM 14, Ty-ler, in the Parish Hall. A light dinner at 5:00 p.m. will proceed the training. Come join us and learn a very effective method of sidewalk counseling! The training utilizes the method devel-oped by Msgr. Phillip Reilly, founder of the "Helpers of God's Precious Infants" which has witnessed the closing of 22 abor-tion centers in the New York area. If you feel called to be a prayer partner for a sidewalk counselor, then this training is also for you! The training is free, and a light dinner and all ma-terials will be provided. Teaching the class will be Joanne Un-derwood, Convert-To-Life Director for the Catholic Pro-Life Committee, the Respect Life Ministry for the Diocese of Dal-las. Pre-registration is required.
