President Janie Tripp

The unfolding coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis has significantly affected the events of our industry. As destinations work to contain the spread of the virus, many countries, states and cities have banned large gatherings and travel. As a result of the New

England Beef Expo cancellation, the New England Galloway Group cancelled the National Belted Galloway Sale and the Youth Show scheduled for late April in Fryeburg, Maine.

The Belted Galloway Society, Inc. had no choice other than to suspend the Spring Council meeting until it became clear if future domestic travel was an option. There are daily announcements of the coronavirus spread via the national news. A workable solution to the present travel dilemma will be to hold the Spring Meeting via a two-part teleconference.

CLRC Covid-19 updateby Jim Washer, CLRC General Manager

Following last weeks’ update response to COVID 19, CLRC staff continued to provide service working on rotation, both in the office and from home.

However, as per the recent news bulletin from Ontario Premier Doug Ford today, March 23rd, all non-essential businesses are required to close their doors effective Tuesday at 11:59pm (midnight) for 14 days (until April 7th), CLRC will follow suit.

CLRC staff will continue to work remotely for as long as we can, and will make every attempt to meet your needs while we monitor developments closely. We will comply with all government and health advisories to protect and support the well-being of our employees and their families.

We encourage breeders to submit work requests electronically, and we will address the workloads accordingly. Please be aware that due to the high volume of people working from home, this has created certain logjams on phone lines, internet service and VPN capabilities. As such, there may be times when service is slow, however we are continuing to work diligently to continue your registry work. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all continue to address this situation responsibly and respectfully. We will get through this together.

NEGG National Saleby Dustin James, National Sale Manager

First and foremost, as a committee we hope that this reaches you in good health and positive spirits.

We realize in this time of uncertainty that there is a lot of anxiety and questions left unanswered. In response to the economic frustrations along with the current social distancing in addition to the possible upcoming travel restrictions, we are forced to make difficult decisions regarding the 30th National Belted Galloway Sale.

These are hard conversations to have at this moment, as we all look at our cattle and our farms as a place to seek solace from the everyday stresses of society. It is with much consideration that we have made the decision not to move forward with a live sale in Fryeburg, Maine on April 25, 2020; however, we feel that it is a necessary decision from a human health, economic and animal health perspective. Though we understand that some may feel this decision is premature, we feel it to be necessary to allow those traveling from afar to plan accordingly and to ensure that we don’t force these cattle into a market that can not sustain the sale to it’s highest integrity.

Upon discussing the sale extensively and weighing alternative options based on the current economic outlook, we have made the decision to cancel the 30th National

Sale and we will start fresh in 2021. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you and ask for your understanding during this frustrating time.

All consignment fees will be refunded in whole and mailed back to each consignor later this week. Our goal is to provide our member consignors with a viable outlet to market their cattle for the greatest return. We encourage you take to advantage of the classified page on our website. I look forward to your calls, messages, emails and texts with any comments, questions or concerns. Thank you again for your understanding.

Registering a belted Galloway bull

All bulls born on or after January 1, 2018 are required to be DNA and hypotrichosis tested BEFORE registration. A request to the Executive Director’s office [email protected] must be made to generate the required paperwork to submit samples to the UC Davis.

Fees for the mandatory DNA and hypotrichosis testing are $65.

Bulls born on January 1, 2018 or after, may be registered with the CLRC for $30 after the DNA and hypotrichosis testing are completed. For bulls born before January 1, 2018 -- DNA or hypotrichosis testing is not a requirement. Fees for registration will remain $50. The Executive Director’s office will notify the breeder with the test results and an authorization for registration.

Samples, Fees & Testing Results

All samples (hair or semen) are to be sent to the official laboratory listed. (Note: semen straws do not have to be frozen but need to be protected from breakage.) All payments ($65 per animal – payable to the BGS) are to be sent to the Executive Director. No results will be released until payment has been received.

The official laboratory will report the test results to the Executive Director’s office who records the results and forwards it to the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation. The report is emailed or mailed to the member who made the request. The member may now complete the application for registration to the CLRC (and mail the registration fee of $30 to the CLRC). Remember to include a semen certificate if the animal was the result of AI. The dam of a calf born as a result of embryo transfer must be DNA recorded with the CLRC. In addition the donor cow has to be hypo tested if she is flushed after Jan. 1, 2018.

Application for Registration Helpful Hints

• The Application for Registration is available on beltie.org or on clrc.ca.

• Online registrations are available on clrc.ca after an online account is established.

• The animal name is limited to 35 characters.• Animals are required to be tattooed before registration.• A semen certificate must accompany the registration of

any animal that is the result of artificial insemination.• A leased bull agreement may be on file for the sire of

an animal to be registered, or a signature is required by the owner of leased bull who sired the calf.

• Performance records are optional.
