A Quilting Friend!

President’s Message Members of the Guild,

I apologize for missing the last Guild meeting and hope that things went well. Pat Sloan is a gifted quilter and I am sorry that I did not get the chance to hear her speak or take one of her work-shops. Well, not TOO sorry. No reflection on Pat Sloan, but my sweetie Jules and I are on vacation! A resort in Palau and a boat from which to snorkel — a new experience for me. At the time I am writing, the experience is still ahead of us, but will be behind us be-fore this newsletter is published. We will then be on our way to a week in Japan.

Changing lanes, I would like to push for service in Guild leader-ship. The ongoing existence of the Guild is dependent on the volun-teer leadership. In other words, if we don’t get people to do the jobs, they don’t get done. In the absence of a Treasurer or a Secre-tary, the Guild closes up shop and CEASES TO EXIST. In the ab-sence of a Librarian, our books sit, not to be accessed, in a closet and our inventory does not get updated. In the absence of Member-ship, we cannot keep track of who is a member and who is not and our records get out-of-date. In the absence of Workshops, no new contracts are signed with speakers/instructors, we have no classes and cannot draw on out-of-area speakers for our meetings. In the absence of a President, you have no one to heckle at monthly meet-ings and no newsletter admonishments like this one! And on and on with each position. Every position, if unfilled, creates a gap in the Guild experience. A few years ago, no one stepped up to take over Holiday Blocks. We warned over and over that, in the absence of a volunteer, we would have to drop the Holiday Block program. That is indeed what happened for one year and there were many, many complaints about that. If you have an accounting or bookkeeping background or a working familiarity with Quickbooks, please step up and serve the Guild in the most important of capacities — Treasurer. 1) We have two new titles this month: (1) Pat Sloan's Celebrate the Seasons: 14

Easy Quilts and Companion Projects, and (2) The Splendid Sampler 2: Another

100 Blocks from a Community of Quilters by Pat Sloan. If you'd like to reserve

either of these titles, shoot me an email and I will set it aside for you. We are

always happy for purchase suggestions.

2) We have a Guild member looking for the book Sashiko Handbags 14 on 14 by

Nancy Shriber. If you have this book in your library and can lend it for a few weeks

to our member, it would make her very happy. We think it may have been sold at

the library sale last summer.

3) We have expanded our free quilting magazine table to include miscellaneous crafts items that

members no longer are using and would like to see in new homes. Last meeting, we had donations

of various and sundry items, all of which were snapped up quickly, including: yarn, a 12 inch quilting

ruler, embroidery thread and plastic needlepoint canvas. (Eighteen inch wooden embroidery hoop

still available.) Please bring any craft magazines or items, quilting patterns, or anything else you

have had sitting in your basement for a few years to the next meeting. Another Guild member will

find them interesting and put them to use. (And the UFO bee will take any partially completed

quilts.)

Thank you for your support of the Guild library!

Karen Wahle, Your Library Lady

will follow on Facebook and in the guild newsletter.

One of the nursing homes that receives our QOW Comfort Quilts has requested "fidget quilts" for

the residents to use in the memory care section of the facility. These are the quilts with zippers, dif-

ferent types and textures of fabric, large beads etc. Online examples and instructions can be found

by doing a Google search or by searching Pinterest, YouTube, etc. However many we can provide

would be greatly appreciated to help the Alzheimers patients to keep their hands busy. When we

give these residents a quilt, they have no idea what it is, but if we gave them something that they

could feel with different textures, it may help.

It would be a good project for a bee. Thank you.
