Youth County Council Spotlight
Jodie Mausser
Jodie is in her sixth year of 4-H. She is in 12th grade and participates in
Student Council, Cheerleading, Volleyball, Softball, and is an FFA District
Officer. In 4-H, Jodie is active in showing dairy cattle, participating in the
Region 9 4-H Camp, and decorating her club booth. She was also the 2017
Buchanan County Dairy Princess. Jodie is involved in YCC because she
enjoys helping the 4-H Clubs, volunteering during fair, and contributing to
her county! She would like to see the younger 4-H and Clover Kids do
hands on projects so they can get more involved and have fun at the same
time!

made by the Exhibitor. No purchased or

alike but need to all fit the common theme. All
decorations must be edible. Place the cupcakes on
a firm disposable plate or piece of cardboard and

The Broiler Project is an opportunity for a 4-H or FFA member to gain valuable experience in raising chicks to broiler
weight. Members are partnered with a local business or individual sponsor who pays for the chicks. The 4-H or FFA
member may choose to raise 25 or 50 birds. This year, there is a new option for families to share 50 or more birds.
Participants will present the best three dressed birds (per 25 sponsored) to the sponsor as payment for the opportunity
to participate in this project. The sponsor will only pay for the chicks while the member is responsible for all other
items necessary to raise the chicks (feed, shelter, etc.) and to process the birds.
The project participant is required to communicate with the sponsor about the birds throughout the project. One week
after fair, the processed birds must be delivered to the sponsor. Processing can be done professionally or by the 4-H/
FFA member. Extension is currently looking into processing options for you; more details to come. If you are not able to
process within one week after fair, deadline to deliver birds to the sponsor is August 15th. If this is not done, 4-H/FFA
member must reimburse the sponsor the amount the sponsor paid for the birds.
The broilers must be picked up from the Extension office on Thursday, May 24th from 4:00 pm- 6:30 pm.
You do not need to be enrolled in a poultry project area to participate. Completed entry forms are due in the
Extension office by 4:30 pm on Friday, April 13th.
Once we have all of the entry forms, the Extension office will send out request forms for sponsors. After all of the
participants have a sponsor, a letter will be sent out informing the participants who their sponsor is.

from a pre-determined producer so that all the goats and sheep have the same genetics.
Goats and sheep are weighed and ear tagged at the pre-fair weigh-in on April 21 at the
Buchanan County Fairgrounds. Participants will select animals at random. Paperwork will be
given and must be completed by fair time. For more information contact the Extension office.
Novice Meat Goat & Sheep Project
Summer Opportunity
Every June, almost 900 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa
State University for three days full of speakers, workshops, mixers,
dances, a banquet, and community service activities.
If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't
even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! You will get to
experience campus life and meet new people from across the
state! You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the
nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new
things to take back to your community and school, and in the
process you might even discover something new about yourself!
There are opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest
of the delegation through small group discussion, the Conference
Chorus, and a Talent Show!
If you have a specific interest in animal science, you might want to look into becoming part of the ROUND-UP
track! There are also workshop tracks that span all three days for certain topics if you'd like to study
something in more depth. Or, you can choose different workshops each day to get more variety while you're
on campus.
If you'd like to be part of the team to capture the Conference in photos, join our Iowa 4-H Youth Camera
Corps, and bring your camera. We're doing things a little differently this year and you'll get to learn photo
skills and put them to work through the workshop series.
Please join us in June for the most incredible three days of your life at the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference!
Regular registration for a fee of $180 closes on June 1st with late registration for $200 available until June
11th. You can also check out financial aid applications, due April 25th to the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
