WHEN LINCOLN CENTER and the New

York Philharmonic announced plans

for a concert staging of Rodgers &

Hammerstein’s beloved musical Carousel

at Avery Fisher Hall, it quickly became

one of the hottest tickets of New York

City’s spring cultural season. With only five

performances and a

starry cast including

Broadway favorite

Kelli O’Hara as Julie

Jordan and celebrat-

ed opera baritone

Nathan Gunn as Billy

Bigelow, it’s no surprise that tickets

for this must-see event sold out faster

than you could say “June Is Bustin’ Out

All Over.”

But don’t despair. Even if you couldn’t

get a ticket to this critically acclaimed

production, you can still enjoy a front-

row seat in your own living room when

THIRTEEN airs Rodgers & Hammerstein’s

Carousel with the New York Philharmonic .

Hosted by five-time Tony winner Audra

McDonald, the Live From Lincoln Center

special features a cast of stars drawn from

Broadway and opera stages, including

O’Hara, Gunn, Stephanie Blythe, Shuler

Hensley, Jason Danieley, Jessie Mueller,

Kate Burton, and John Cullum. Rob Fisher

conducts and John Rando directs, with

choreography by Warren Carlyle.

With this highly-anticipated broadcast,

we continue our proud tradition of bring-

ing the best of Broadway and beyond to

audiences from Great Neck to the Great

Plains, reaching people who may not have

access to the performing arts and inspir-

ing new generations of artists.

“One of the first operatic programs

I saw was on Channel 13,” Nathan

Gunn said in a recent

interview. “I think it was

Luciano Pavarotti singing

in Tosca at The Met.

I was floored by not only

his performance, but by

the grand scale of it all

and the beauty of the music. It may have

been the first time I’d seen an opera. It was

one of the many little things that pointed

me in a certain direction in my life and

changed the course of it.”

THIRTEEN members since the 1960s, and their enthu-

siasm for public television is as robust as ever. “We

never miss the NewsHour, Nature and Bill Moyers,” says

Jane, the first Vice Chair of the Friends of THIRTEEN,

an organization that builds links between the station

and the community through local partnerships and

other activities.

The Butlers are also longtime supporters of the

Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and

Lincoln Center. “I volunteered at Lincoln Center before

becoming active at THIRTEEN, so I was thrilled when

the Tisch WNET Studios at Lincoln Center opened. It’s

a wonderful way to engage with the community.”
