Metroparks of the Toledo Area is a regional system of premier natural, historical and cultural parklands. A public agency serving Lucas County, Metroparks maintains parks and conservation areas totaling 11,000 acres. The park district’s mission is to enhance our quality of life and inspire preservation efforts in this and future generations.

Hours of OperationAll Metroparks open daily, 7 a.m. until dark. Admission: Free. Other hours and fees apply to specific attractions.

ProgramsMetroparks programs and activities encompass a wide variety of interests related to the park district’s purpose. Programs are open to everyone. Chil-dren must be accompanied by adults unless noted as a drop-off program.

If you have a disabling condition and would like information and support for accessibility to programs, services, facilities or applying for a job at Metroparks, call 419-407-9701. Park Partners volunteers or interpreters are available upon request.

Metroparks TrailsTrails in each of the Metroparks offer a variety of distances and experienc-es, from winding dirt paths through the woods and prairies, to hard-surface all-purpose trails suitable for bicycling and skating. Oak Openings Preserve also has horse trails.

Counselors In TrainingMetroparks is seeking teens 13 to 17 with exceptional interests in nature, the environment and youth education to serve as Counselors in Training (C.I.T.s) for 2013 Metroparks Summer Camps.

C.I.T.s work with camp counselors teaching campers, playing games, making crafts, fishing, canoeing, swimming and more. This is an excellent opportunity for leadership development, service hours and experience in outdoor education.

Wildwood Manor HouseThe stunning Georgian Colonial-style mansion at Wildwood Preserve stands as one of Toledo’s architectural icons. Enjoy free guided or self-guided tours every weekend at this 32,000-square-foot Depression-era home and learn about the region’s rich history. Plan some extra time to visit the rare Ellen Biddle Shipman garden, Frank Stranahan exhibit and the Manor House library. Tour Hours: April – May, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, Noon to 5 p.m.; June – August, Tuesdays – Fridays and Sundays, Noon to 5 p.m.Free. The Canal ExperienceMake a reservation to float back to the year 1876 aboard a replica canal boat at The Canal Experi-ence at Providence Metropark. This is the only site in Ohio where mules still pull a boat through an original 19th century lock. Oak Grove SchoolMeet a 19th century schoolmarm and experience how much education has changed in the past 100 years. Side Cut ExplorerRide along the banks of the Maumee River and down the canal towpath in Side Cut Metropark’s open air trolley. A naturalist highlights the scenery as passengers relax in a wheelchair accessible tram. Honoring Our Ancestors: The Bicentennial of Fort MiamisOn this bicentennial anniversary of the First Seige of Fort Meigs, take time to honor the British, American and American Indian soldiers who fought for control of the Maumee Valley. Witness the Ohio Historical Marker dedication ceremony paying tribute to the 41st Regiment of Foot sta-tioned at Fort Miamis in May 1813. Organic Lawn and Garden Workshop with Rachel CarsonIn her 1962 book, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson drew attention to the overuse of pesticides. Her personal convictions and thoughts will begin the workshop in a re-enactment. Participants will then get tools, tips and resources from area agencies on how to go organic with lawn and garden care. Learn how you can be part of Audubon’s Healthy Yard, to measure our collective impacts on birds and envi-ronmental conservation and health.
