Crestwood Primary School April Newsletter

Dear Parents,

April showers bring May flowers! Let’s hope we have finally seen the last of the snow that we have had all winter. All of the students are starting to notice the signs of spring around our building with the buds that are beginning to sprout.

Our parent information night for children entering kindergarten in the fall will be on Thursday, April 7th at 6:00 p.m. in our cafeteria. The evening will begin with a presentation from our kindergarten teachers, as well as the school nurse. The PTO will again invite parents to join and participate in our school community. Parents will have the opportunity to complete unfinished paper-work, as well as tour the building.

If you know of any parent who has not yet picked up a registration packet please encourage them to call the school office or go to the district website at www.crestwoodschool.org. The kindergarten information will be on the main page and the Primary School link.

Finally, Friday, April 29th the Outdoor Education Committee will be hosting the annual Earth Day celebration. This after school event has many activities for families. The PTO will also be assisting and volunteering at the various sta-tions set up on the Primary and Intermediate campus. Please look for further information coming home about this event.

Preschool:

The preschool children have been busy with transition meetings to prepare for Kindergarten. The preschoolers have also been working with the 5th grade Charge students to learn the letters of the alphabet and numbers.

Crestwood Primary

Kindergarten:

Math- We have been working hard on calendar activities and money. The students are learning the coins and how much they are worth. Science- We went on a habitat hike with Mr. Sorrick. We looked for animal tracks and found many in the snow. Reading- We are working hard on letters, sounds and sight words. We are also working on writing words and sentences. We encourage all students to work on IXL Math at home.

First Grade:

First graders have been busy learning new vowel combinations in words, writing paragraphs, and celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday. We have been practicing money concepts and exploring force and motion with mag-nets. Students are participating in the Flat Stanley project and learning about special cities and places all over the country.

Dr. Seuss Week in First Grade!

The first grade students in Mrs. Picone’s and Miss Benton’s class celebrated the books of Dr. Seuss during the week of his birthday, March 2nd. Some stories read were: Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, If I Ran the Zoo and There’s a Wocket in My Pocket. Both classes integrated that week’s lessons and skills into learn-ing about the books of Dr. Seuss. We had a great time learning rhyming skills, long vowels, painting animals that we would put in the zoo and eating green eggs and ham too! Mrs. Trivelli came in and read a Dr. Seuss book to our class, titled I Can Read With My Eyes Shut.

First Graders created characters based on Mrs. Trivelli reading to first graders.

If I Ran the Zoo by Dr. Seuss.

Mrs. Picone’s class in their “cat hats” based on the story, The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss

Second Grade:

The second graders are busy learning about the Earth and Space. They have been observing and filling out a moon journal at home. Social Studies lessons are focusing on economics. Mr. Booher's room is working in groups to create a city. Other classes made and sold friendship bracelets to raise money for a classmate who moved. Many different St. Patrick's Day activities took place. All second grade students have just completed two weeks of testing. The Iowa and CogAT tests will now be sent off for grading.

Community Service Project:

The young entrepreneurs in Ms. Boyle’s and Mrs. Grebb’s second grade have been busy crocheting bracelets to meet the demand of the new business, Friendship Bracelets. The business began after the students ex-pressed an interest in helping one of their friends, Emily Ziska, who until recently had been a student in Mrs. Grebb’s class. Emily’s baby sister, Isabella was born with a rare autoimmune disease. Isabella is currently being treated in Cincinnati and Emily’s family has relocated to be near her. The students wanted to do some-thing to help Emily and the idea of using their new found crocheting skills to make friendship bracelets to sell was born. Many different skills go into making the bracelets. The children had to measure the length of the yarn, advertise for the business by making posters and doing morning announcements over the loud speaker.

Page 4: April 2011 Newsletter - Crestwood High School 2011 Newsletter.pdf · Dr. Seuss Week in First Grade! The first grade students in Mrs. Picone’s and Miss Benton’s class celebrated

The students also had to count money and make change during the sale. Many economic terms were also reinforced during this project. For example the classes experienced a scarcity of bracelets when they sold out on the first day of the sale, even though they had made 300 bracelets! This experience made the topic of supply and demand and the difference between consumers and producers more concrete for the students. Most importantly, the students learned to think of others to make a difference! The second graders raised $550.00 for the family!!

Thank you for your continued support of Crestwood Primary School. Please feel free to contact me at 330-422-3104 or at [email protected] if you should have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Beth Trivelli

Congratulations to these students for being “caught in the act” in the

month of March!

April’s Classroom Guidance Topic is Careers

This month K-1 students will learn what it means to work and why people work. They will also be introduced to some of the different careers that people have today. Exposure to careers at an early age is beneficial in preparing our students for the world of work. Many of the skills they are learning here in elementary school will be skills they will need to use when they enter the world of work.

**Second grade students will learn about careers in May.**

Body Safety Lessons

Ms. Heather Lanfranchi, Child Violence Prevention Specialist from Townhall II in Kent will be visiting our school April 27-29. She will be talking to all second grade classes about body safety. Look for more information to come about these lessons.

WHOOOOOOO ARE YOU?

Mrs. Brugmann's kindergarten class finally got to go outside for a habitat hike in March looking for animal evidence. The students were sooooo excited to find owl pellets, which ac-cording to our nature expert Matt Sorrick of Hiram college were Barred Owl pellets. We have a real stuffed Barred Owl diorama from the Cleveland Natural History Museum visiting

our class.

In honor of Earth Day, the month of April has been designated as “Science

April 29th from 4:30-6:30pm at CPS. We will wrap up our Science Month with “Go

Green” week, which features daily environmental themes. More details are to fol-

Please contact Mrs. Brugmann at [email protected] if you would be inter-ested in preparing our sunflower circle here at school in April so we can do our planting in mid May.

Committee appreciates your

support!

Mrs. Curfman is collecting clean, flat, bottle caps from glass bottles. (She will be spray painting them, so it doesn't matter what they are.) She will be using these in an Earth Day project at the school cele-bration. Caps are needed by April 16.

Have and old cell phone or used ink cartridges to throw away? Students are collecting these items to

earn money for Crestwood schools. Collection boxes will be distributed and drop off locations will be

announced soon. For further information contact Annette Thompson at 330-298-3151.
