December: Shine for the Holidays Challenge: Drink Six Glasses of Water per Day

Leasing Corner Fall leaves and turkey dinners have given way to December’s cozy winter nights and thoughts of holiday cheer. The happy elves in the leasing office would like to extend a great big THANK YOU to all of our residents! You are the reason we are here, and we appreciate all you do to make Crestwood a great place to be. In keeping with the holiday mood, here are twelve ways to share the Crestwood living spirit! Bring a friend along to the Red Hat event this month. We always have a great program guaranteed to fit every season. Invite your friends to join you for your building dinner. It’s a great chance for your friends to meet your neighbors, and maybe your friend would like to BE your neighbor. Share the music with a friend! Concerts are a perfect way to enjoy Crestwood living together. Bring someone new along on a Tripping Tuesday outing and share the active Crestwood lifestyle. Tell others about your community fundraising involvement. We are happy Crestwood residents are so active in good works for good causes. The dinner dance at Crestwood West is the perfect way to entertain friends and family while sharing fun. Let us entertain your church group. We would love to sponsor refreshments. Invite the card players in your life to share their favorite game with you at your building. Bring a friend and join the HealthCrest exercise group. It’s a fun way to stay fit! Does your crafting or hobby circle need room to stretch out? Check with your RSC to reserve space for a crowd of crafters! After sharing the fun of Crestwood living, be sure to bring your friend to see us in the leasing office for a tour. If you refer them and they move in there’s a $100 bonus for you!

Ginger Kelly and Cathy Mason, Leasing Counselors

The Holidays are here! It can be challenging to keep up with a well rounded and consistent diet and exercise program during this hectic season. HealthCrest challenges you to stick to it by drinking 6 glasses of water per day. Our bodies are over 70% water! Fueling up with six 8 ounce glasses a day will keep you feeling hydrated and will help when trying to stay away from tempting holiday treats! Be sure to visit the Fitness center this month for

a personalized exercise program and group exercise classes. Making time for exercise can help reduce stress by increasing endorphins. Our HealthCrest event Wednesday December 12th will focus on ways to reduce stress throughout the holiday season and every day! If you have any questions about the Wellness opportunities discussed in this

article, please contact Christina Baucco at 220-0951.

All I Need To Know I Learned From Santa

1. Encourage people to believe in you.2. Always remember who's naughty and who's nice.3. Don't pout.4. It's as much fun to give as it is to receive.5. Some days it's ok to feel a little chubby.6. Make your presents known.7. Always ask for a little bit more than what you really want.8. Bright red can make anyone look good.9. Wear a wide belt and no-one will notice how many pounds you've gained.10. If you only show up once a year, everyone will think you're very important.11. Whenever you're at a loss for words, say

"HO, HO, HO!"

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Once again, Crestwood Village will celebrate the holidays with our annual traditions . . . festive décor, a resident party, holiday cards, caroling, charitable giving, and special dinner bus events when we’ll go to see the pretty holiday lights. I hope you will join in the fun and even invite your family and friends to our annual Jingle Mingle event Friday, December 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. We’ll have appetizers, desserts, entertainment, and maybe even a visit from Santa Claus! We all know that baking, shopping, wrapping, traveling, and socializing can be overwhelming, so please don’t forget to give yourself a break. Remember, we celebrate the holidays for an entire month, and they don’t have to be perfect to be wonderful! I know many of you spent decades working and sacrificing in order to give your children and loved ones special holidays now it’s your turn! Spend some of your time doing the things that are most important to you, and let someone else handle the rest. The older I get, the more convinced I am that the time you spend with someone, how you make them feel, and the memories you share, are much more important than the material gifts you give them. I encourage you to consider sharing your heart, memories, traditions and time with those you love this Christmas. Cook a meal together, share a family recipe with younger generations. My beloved grandmothers’ recipes are some of my favorite possessions – even stained and tattered -- because they were hand-written and given with love. Please let me know if you want a copy of my grandmother’s yeast roll recipe or

my mother’s chocolate upside-down cake recipe, or my husband’s grandmother’s Pegachi recipe that came all the way from Hungary. Another meaningful, inexpensive gift to give is a heartfelt letter sharing your favorite memories. Why not send fewer holiday cards, but make the ones you do send really matter? “Leading authorities have observed that memory and ‘life review’ are important parts of the aging process,” says Barry Lebowitz, Ph.D, deputy director of UCSD’s Stein Institute for Research on Aging. “These shared memories are important for the young as well – children enjoy hearing about how it was ‘when your parents were your age . . .” Holidays evoke memories, and what better time to share them? When all else fails, one of my favorite stress-relievers is humor. At Crestwood Village North, we are a community that loves to laugh. The very best family traditions also often revolve around humor. So, this year I’m writing Santa and asking for a thinner body and a fatter wallet, because he seemed to mix those up last year! Although I will let him know I am thankful for his elves because they make me feel tall! And last but not least, we hope you remember the reason for the season. Whatever your faith, I hope you find peace and joy through the services and customs of your place of worship. Meeting our own spiritual needs is truly the best gift that we give ourselves and spurs us to give others the best of ourselves. As we enjoy the busy holiday season and begin planning for 2013, I’d like to thank each and every resident for making this a wonderful year at Crestwood Village North, and for all the fun and laughter we’ve shared this year. I leave you with a fitting quotation from John Greenleaf Whittier . . . “A little smile, a word of cheer, A bit of love from someone near, A little gift from one held dear, Best wishes for the coming year…These make a Merry Christmas!”

Blessings,Angela Mager,Executive Director

Meet Philip Greenwood and Martha Hitt

Since moving to Crestwood Village North in March 2011, Mr. Phillip Greenwood, his sister-in-law Martha Hitt, and their dog Lizzie, have become very comfortable here. They had to wait for nearly a year for a first floor apartment because of their dog, but they say it was worth the wait. Phil grew up as one of five children in a small river town called Ravenswood. His father owned Greenwood Grocery and Meat Market. He put in many hours at the family store until he left to join the Air Force. He served in the Air Force for 21 years during the Korean War. After his service, he became an IPS Police Officer for over 20 years. During this time he was also a professional clown named “Patches.” He currently serves as president for an AARP chapter, and Mason’s Lodge #126. He is also involved with the Murat Shriner’s Temple, Sons of the American Revolution, and is a member of St. Luke’s Methodist Church. He and his late wife have one son, Phillip Jr. whom they adopted from Spain. During his 50-year marriage to Elizabeth, he promised to care for her sister, Martha. Martha loves to care for Lizzie and to create elaborate scrapbooks. Phil and Martha both say that what they like best about Crestwood is the number of fun activities where they can interact with other residents.
