Presidents Report Paul Pickhardt 962-5213 [email protected] Tennis Courts With the assistance of Chris Schell, bids have been received for the badly needed renovation of our four tennis courts and I am pleased to report that the bids are within our budget plans, allowing us to begin work in late April or early May. This project will involve the removal of the existing asphalt, repair of the base as necessary and new slabs. Diving Boards To help clear up any confusion on this issue: 1. The diving boards have been removed to comply with our current insurance plan requirements. 2. Our annual dues ($500/year) pay for the existing insurance premiums, without the boards. 3. If we choose, as a community, to reinstall the diving boards this year, we must vote on absorbing the cost of the pre- mium up charge, estimated to be between $8-10,000 per year, in addition to our current premium. Actual cost options will be finalized at the annual meeting. 4. The cost of this premium will then be added to our annual dues as an “assessment”. 5. Each household will share this expense equally. 6. We will conduct this vote during the annual meeting . Those present will be allowed one vote per household. Please note that this assessment will be for one year only and will require another vote next year with a new premium esti- mate pertaining specifically to the diving boards. Capital Project Committee Under the leadership of our association Vice President, Ken Nestico, a Capital Projects Committee has been formed. This important committee will undertake the task of reviewing our community assets and restating our long range capital budget plan as required. This LRP will be maintained as a work in progress, reviewed periodically to we insure we are keeping an eye on future as regards both community property and the funding to maintain them. Call Ken if you have any interest in being involved. Safety and Security Our neighborhood watch continues to be operational and functional. This group will not only save us money as a commu- nity, but, hopefully, will assist our private security firm, Bravo One, in keeping our homes and property safe from vandals Please consider calling Jim Tollus and signing up for an occasional tour. As the weather continues to improve, please be cautious of our children and pedestrians. If your shrubs are blocking traffic sight lines, please take the time to trim them accordingly. Vice President Report – Ken Nestico 967-0172 - [email protected]

• Insurance quotations are still being reviewed to determine the cost impact of retaining the swimming pool diving boards and will be presented at the Annual Meeting. If approved, a special assessment will result, so please plan on attending. Also, I would like to thank all of you who have provided insurance carrier recommendations.

• The Capital Projects Committee has met and is developing a process to review a lengthy list of anticipated capital maintenance

expenditures. Top on the list, is the resurfacing of the tennis courts. Formal quotations have been received and are currently under review.

• We are still seeking additional members, especially those with construction, and Civil Engineering background. Please contact me

if you are willing to support this important effort.

Website If you have not yet registered for the website, please go to www.upstatecommunities.com, enter River Walk, and send what registration information you want to include. You will receive notification of the completion of registration. All documents for River Walk can be found there, as well as our directory, and a place for classifieds and neighborhood announcements. Don’t forget, the website now has an alphabetical listing of neighbors from our directory that you can easily download for personal use. Of course, the directory information is only as updated as the individual information you provide. If your work place/number has changed, if you have additional chil-dren to add, if you need to change your emergency contact, please submit that information to your street rep or to Clau-dia Gregg, street rep coordinator, or Ken Nestico. New neighbors should be sure they have completed both a direc-tory registration AND a website registration. The data bases are not the same at this time. The folks who run the website seem to have found some of the problem in the sending of duplicate mailings. I apolo-gize if you are one of the people who are getting more than one. PLEASE, if you have changed your email server, you need to change that address on the website. Edit it yourself, call Donna Harley, 963-2145, or email Donna at [email protected] to adjust that. Otherwise, mail sent to you is bouncing back to Donna. The addresses from returned mail are being deleted from the registration. Also, if your internet provider has a spam filter, please add the website address to your address book. Some filters are now bouncing back mail as spam if the address is not in the individual’s online address book.

The River Walk Book Club

The River Walk book club will meet April 20, at 7:30 at the home of Marguerite DeMarse. We will be discussing The Master Butchers Singing by Louise Erdrich.

Book Description Having survived World War I, Fidelis Waldvogel returns to his quiet German vil-lage and marries the pregnant widow of his best friend, killed in action. With a suitcase full of sausages and a master butcher's pre-cious knife set, Fidelis sets out for America. In Argus, North Dakota, he builds a busi-ness, a home for his family -- which in-cludes Eva and four sons -- and a singing club consisting of the best voices in town. When the Old World meets the New -- in the person of Delphine Watzka -- the great adventure of Fidelis's life begins. Delphine meets Eva and is enchanted. She meets Fi-delis, and the ground trembles. These mo-mentous encounters will determine the course of Delphine's life, and the trajectory of this brilliant novel.

GROUNDS COMMITTEE Janet Holliday 963-3319 [email protected] Other routine grounds maintenance activities are continuing as usual. Grass mowing, fertilizing and weed spraying have picked back up. And, the win-ter/spring flowers at the entrances are up and recovering from the hard winter freezes.

We have selected the flowers for the spring planting of this summer’s entrance displays. They will be planted in mid April.

A second horticultural oil spraying of the failing trees around the clubhouse has also been completed.

Installation of the new french drain along the Adams Mill side of the pool should begin soon. We are also planning to have our tree maintenance contrac-tor do a spring clean up of the fallen branches and debris along the paths.

Architectural Committee Eric Hanniger 458-7076.

The Architectural Committee is beginning to see a lot of activity in applications for home improve-ment. This is normal for the spring season, and we are glad to see the numerous minor and major home improvements! If you are planning such an improvement, please call any of us and obtain an application. There is also widespread activity out-side of the formal, architectural review process. Many of us are sprucing up our yards, repainting trim, and maintaining our mailboxes. These activi-ties help to maintain the value of all our homes, and are noticed by your neighbors. Reminder: The Architectural Committee is respon-sible for the approval of all additions or architec-tural alterations that are governed by the protec-tive covenants and architectural guidelines of River Walk. The following activities require guid-ance, review and approval from the committee: an addition to your house or garage, enclosing a deck, adding or extending a deck or porch, build-

ing a fence, installing a pool, swing sets, installing a satellite dish, or changing the building envelope in any way. Below is a list of all of the projects the Architec-tural Committee has approved over the last few months: 4 Bramblewood Terrace New fence 9 Bramblewood Terrace New fence 2 Broken Pine Circle New deck 5 Deer Track Road New landscaping 11 Deer Track Road New fence 15 Deer Track Road New fence 102 Laurel Oak Deck expansion and porch 105 River Point Court New fence 114 Parkside Drive New trellis 323 Parkside Drive New home construction 102 River Walk Blvd New play structure 1105 River Walk Drive New play structure 205 River Walk Drive New landscaping 207 Walnut Trace Court New patio You may call any one of us for information and guidance: Bob Campbell 297-9264, Bob Harley 963-2145, or Eric Hanniger 458-7076.

River Walk Tennis News We are pleased to announce the new Tennis Chairperson – Korrie Berens. Her phone number is 288-8162. Her e-mail address is [email protected]. Korrie is an avid tennis player, and she will be a tremendous asset to our neighborhood tennis program. Thank you to Nancy Hutchison for distributing tennis keys. Anita Harley will now be the sole distributor of the tennis keys. Also, thank you to Carolyn Maier who has been in charge of the sign-up sheets. She is replaced by Sheryl Bandy. Thank you to all of these ladies! Don’t forget to sign out courts before play, place all trash in the supplied wastebaskets, and lock gates before leaving the courts. If you play at night, please remember to turn off the courtside lights. Also, we ask that you not take any glass bottles onto the courts!

Bids are currently outstanding for the construction of new tennis courts. As a result of this pending construction, we are unable at this time to be confident in offering any summer programs, such as the Women’s Round Robin and the Children’s Round Robin. We will keep you posted! Watch the neighborhood bulletin boards also. Dave Carrick, formerly with the Greenville Tennis Center and current coach of all three River Walk Women’s 3.0 Tennis Teams, is available for children and adult tennis lessons and clinics at the River Walk courts, to River Walk residents only. To set up a lesson or clinic, or to obtain times and rates, please call Dave at 918-2505. Call Anita Harley (286-6192) for keys to the courts. There is a $5.00 fee. We are currently seeking one more interested person to serve as tennis co-chairperson. If you are interested in serving as a tennis co-chair or for any other tennis information or concerns, please contact Korrie Berens (288-8162).

***SECOND CALL** We have been discussing the continuing need for more storage areas. One proposal is to convert the chang-ing/locker areas of both pool bathrooms into enclosed storage closets. If anyone has a problem with this please let Carolyn Maier or the Pool Committee know. **SECOND CALL** The donated (35”) TV in the clubhouse has, unfortunately, breathed it’s last and cannot be repaired. Did anyone get a large screen/plasma TV for Christmas and is wondering what to do with your old set? We are looking for a dona-tion of a TV for the clubhouse. Please contact Carolyn Maier. Clubhouse rentals and scheduling – Julie Downs – 627-9230 **For quicker response please email Julie at: [email protected]** Activity chairpersons must call Julie to schedule clubhouse use prior to meetings or neighborhood functions to avoid conflicts. The rental fee schedule is as follows: 0-24 persons - $50 25-49 persons - $75 50+ persons - $100 Business Use (luncheons, meetings, etc.) 1-75 persons - $100 The resident renter must remain in attendance at their function, complete a rental contract, and leave a $100 clean-ing/damage deposit. It is also the renter’s responsibility to remove all trash and completely clean the facility as de-tailed in the contract checklist and leave the facility in fully rentable condition. This also applies to all neighbor-hood committees and groups using the clubhouse. We do not use a cleaning service after every function. Your deposit can be used to hire a service if you desire. We have a cleaning group that can come in as needed after par-ties. Please call Julie Downs for more details. Fitness Center access chips – Carolyn Maier – 228-2571 – email: [email protected]

Access chips are $10 and each member of the household over 14 must complete a liability waiver. Please review the rules with all house-hold users and do not loan the chip as all chips are numbered and logged under your name. Weight Room usage is monitored by computer by chip number. If anyone has lost their chip, please contact me as soon as possible to ensure no one uses the facility in your name. Any-one without an access chip should not be let into the fitness center. Warning: The access chips are sensitive to scanner units in retail and grocery stores, hard bumps, and static electricity. Care must be taken to protect the chips, as once dead; they can not be reactivated. Pur-chase of another chip would be required. Children under 14 years of age are not allowed in the fitness center. Shirts and shoes are required when working out. Equipment must be wiped down after use and all free weights must be returned to the metal shelves. Also, lights, fans, and TV need to be turned off and doors securely locked when you are leaving. If you use the bath-rooms, please use common sense – be considerate and leave the area clean, toilets and urinals flushed, and turn off lights when you leave. We have had complaints about food smell and trash left in the weight room. No eating in the fitness center – this includes beverages other than water. Also, with the cold and flu season it is even more important to wipe down equipment after use. In fact it is a good idea to bring 2 towels with you and wipe surfaces before use too. Disinfec-tant cleaning solution is provided. Please be sure the outside door completely catches and locks when you leave.

Membership

The non-resident pool membership packets were mailed March 12 to members from last sum-mer. They will have two weeks to renew. At that time, names on the waiting list will be called and allowed to come and pick up packets to join until the 40 member cap is reached. Anyone knowing of someone who wishes to join this summer should have them call Donna at 963-2145.

I still need volunteers to help stuff the packets for the annual resident billing. If you can help, please give me a call. They will be hand delivered to each home following the adoption of the annual budget at the April Annual Meeting but I would like the envelopes ready to go so I can just insert the billing page.
