How to Translate Literary Works

Become an avid and intimate reader ineach of your languages. Translating creative works requires theability to read between the lines. You haveto love reading in the genre(s) you'retranslating and be both intimate with thewriter and the nuances of language,culture, thought, and message. If, forinstance, you translate prose poems fromDutch into English, you have to read asmany published (and unpublished) prosepoems as possible, in Dutch and inEnglish. This will help you to grasp thestyles, the subtleties, the contexts, andsoul of prose poetry in order to

deconstruct the Dutch and reconstructthe English.Remember to keep on top of yourlanguages. Language is a fluid entity thatconstantly changes and evolves. Dialects

change, semantics change, new words arecoined, old words die and are reborn .

Master your writing skills in your mothertongue. Most literary translators, with very fewexceptions, translate exclusively into theirmother tongue, the language within bestthey express themselves and are most athome in. To translate a book, you have towrite a book; to translate a play, you needto know how to write a play. The only wayyou can do this is write as much as

possible in your language andcontinuously hone that skill. Mostpublished translators are also publishedwriters. A rare exception to the rule wasIsrael's Leah Goldberg (1911 - 1970). She

was European raised and educated, yettranslated exclusively into ModernHebrew, her third language, from six otherlanguages. She however adopted Hebrewas her home and vehicle of expression andwas a prolific writer exclusively in Hebrewas well.

Get an education.

Academic institutions worldwide are oneof the strongest sources and supporters of

literary and academic translation.Consider getting at least one degree incomparative literature, linguistics,languages, or translation to give you ahead start. Literary translation specifically

is often offered through creative writingprograms. Receiving academic training willalso give you access to literary lectures,mentor ships with professors whotranslate, and libraries with well-established and worldly collections. If academia is out of your league, you canteach yourself through books. Check outyour local book shops and libraries onwhat is published on the subject and read,read, read. Research the writer and work you aretranslating.

A writer's work is a piece of him/herself.

In order to interpret what you're reading,you have to know everything about theperson behind the words. Ask yourself:When and where was the work written?Where was the writer from? What

surrounded the writer at the time thework was written? Does the work drawreferences from other literary pieces?What else has the writer written? And soforth.

Know the risks behind what you'retranslating.

The translation of a particular work cancost both the writer and translator theirlives depending on the statement of thework. The translation of books hassparked revolutions and wars. Know youraudience.

Remember that no translation is perfect.

The minute you begin to render your firstsentence, the original is already lost in

translation. It is your job not to find anequivalent but rather reconstruct theoriginal as though it was written in thetarget language. Cultural concepts, shadesof colour, shades of meaning, and even

history can and will be lost. Don't beafraid of that but instead embrace it. Youcan always use footnotes / end notes if necessary. Who is your audience?

Find a publisher.

Literary translations are largelycontracted through publishing houses.Approach them, research them, providewriting/translation samples, andnegotiate. Some countries offer grantsthrough federal arts/culture councilsallocated specifically for translatingliterary works. Check out what's available

to you and weigh your options.

Join a professional translationorganization.

Whether you live in Canada, Chile,Cameroon, or China, there areprofessional organizations for translatorsas well as organizations for literarytranslation. Joining an organization isimportant for your professionalism, itenables you to network, and it opens your

doors to professional trainingopportunities and translation prizes.

Practice, practice, practice.

Find yourself a comfortable place andtranslate for at least fifteen minutes a day.

You can only get better by working hardand maintaining a regular schedule. Aftera while, you will be amazed at how muchwork you have accumulated.
