Grand Challenges Brazil

Next steps: Continue dialogue with MOH on Grand Challenges framework and potential Family

Health GC partnership Secure partnership with CNPq for Phase II grants Continue to engage other research funders in Brazil around potential GC partnerships

Joint funding of projects in Brazil as part of international GC initiatives

Focus on global health and development priorities Proposed first cooperation around Family Health GC

GC initiatives pursued and funded by Brazilian sources Focus on national health priorities

Partnership between BMGF and FAPs to provide supplemental funding to Brazilian GCE Phase I grantees formalized in December 2011

Co-funding with CNPq for Phase II grants still under discussion

Anyone can apply From any country and any discipline and at any level of experience From academia, government, non-profits or industry Review is “blind” and champion-based

Applying is easy Two page application No preliminary data required

Awards are frequent and rapid Two opportunities to apply each year Awards made in 4-6 months Phase I funding of US$100,000 can lead to Phase II funding of up to US$1M

FAP GCE Partnership

1. Grants selected through regular GCE process− Brazilian submissions will be processed by the GCE program’s standard review

mechanism− Selected proposals will be funded by BMGF at US$100,000− Direct grant agreement between grantee and BMGF− FAPs will collaborate with foundation to deepen reach of GCE call into Brazil

2. For participating states, FAP will supplement funding for all grantees based in the state in which it covers− FAPs will formalize their endorsement of BMGF selection process or conduct

expedited diligence to formalize project selection − Respective FAP will provide additional funding equivalent to US$50,000 or $100,000

in Brazilian Reals − FAPs establish separate grant agreement directly with grantee

3. Successful projects can apply for Phase II grants− Coordination with CNPq and others during selection process (TBD)

Round 9 GCE Topics

Protect Crop Plants from Biotic Stresses from Field to Market

Challenge: Soliciting transformative solutions to pest and pathogen pressures faced by smallholder farmers in developing countries; encouraging researchers and entrepreneurs to generate ideas that will revolutionize current approaches to crop protection by focusing on plants, pests, pathogens, weeds and/or their interactions.

New Approaches for the Interrogation of Anti-Malarial Compounds

Challenge: Supporting unconventional and radically new approaches, methods, and assays to analyze, characterize, and prioritize anti-malarial compounds and to glean more information required for the development of next generation malaria drugs.

Aid Is Working. Tell the World.

Challenge: Soliciting new approaches to communications that motivate the public in wealthy countries of the world to change their minds about aid, and take actions to demonstrate their support.

Design New Approaches to Optimize Immunization Systems

Challenge: Supporting novel approaches to optimizing the performance of immunization logistics and supply systems in low-resource settings which address one or more of these gap areas: vaccine product characteristics, supply system design, environmental impact, information systems, human resources and vaccination acceptance.

Explore New Solutions for Global Health Priority Areas

Challenge: Soliciting new solutions for global health priority areas: malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, pneumonia, enteric disease and diarrhea, polio, maternal and neonatal health, and/or family planning; revolutionary new technologies or improvements upon current technologies; low-cost solutions; and projects with clear and testable scientific plans.

Increasing Vaccination Efficacy with ACE InhibitorsJulio Scharfstein at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro

Idea: Interfere with innate homeostasis at the onset of vaccination by re-purposing ACE inhibitor (Captopril) to boost efficacy of vaccination

Large-scale MHC: Epitope Analysis for Vaccine DevelopmentGustavo Fioravanti Vieira at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul

Idea: Use bioinformatic approach to identify MHC and immune response features among viral peptides through the comparison of immunogenic epitopes already in the literature

"Lego" like Sanitation System: Pit Latrines Made of BiocompostAntonio Avila at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Idea: Develop a biodegradable “Eco-blocks” assemblage system for pit latrines to replace concrete slabs or conventional brick/cement materials
