BROWN SCHOOL ELETTER ~ APRIL 1, 2015 It’s a Small Busy World at Brown School by Patti Vitale As I prepared to write this article, I was struck by how much goes on at Brown School. Our 8 th grade students and teachers left for a five-day tour of Washington D.C. early on Monday morning. They will visit historical sites and museums as well as Capital Hill and the White House! On Tuesday, March 24 th , a few 6 th grade students, along with Mrs. Messenger and Mrs. Klotz, visited the NY State Capital and participated in the Humane Society Lobby Day. That same day, Brown School students in kindergarten through 7 th grade were introduced to Isatou Ceesay, an inspirational woman from West Gambia, who creatively dealt with her village’s plastic trash problem. They also met Miranda Paul and Elizabeth Zunon, author and illustrator of Isatou’s story, One Plastic Bag. Our nursery through 5 th grade students entertained many family members and friends at the amazing Little Folks Musical; It’s a Small World. Our students are privileged to have such rich experiences, which help to prepare them for their responsibilities as the future leaders of our small world. The Brown School community is honored to have a talented and dedicated faculty who provide a vibrant educational experience for our students. Brown School students understand, regardless of their age, that they have the ability to make a difference in this world. It all starts in the small world of Brown School!

As I prepared to write this article, I was struck by how much goes on at Brown School. Our 8th grade students and teachers left for a five-day tour of Washington D.C. early on Monday morning. They will visit historical sites and museums as well as Capital Hill and the White House! They also met Miranda Paul and Elizabeth Zunon, author and illustrator of Isatou’s story, One Plastic Bag. Our nursery through 5th grade students entertained many family members and friends at the amazing Little Folks Musical; It’s a Small World.

    Working on O.V.A.!

Every spring, Brown School art students (6th grade and up) take on the challenges of the Olympics of the Visual Arts. The New York State Art Teachers Association sponsors this exciting display of creativity and schools from all over New York travel to Saratoga Springs to compete in the day-long exhibition. O.V.A. provides artistic challenges in a variety of categories, from painting and sculpture to design and architecture. Students then work for nearly 4 months brainstorming, researching, designing, and executing their artistic solutions. They also create extensive portfolios examining artists

and history from an array of cultures and time periods. O.V.A. is not just a way to realize an artistic vision, but to exercise Brown Schoolers’ creative problem solving as well as critical thinking skills. As the day of the competition nears, students eagerly await seeing all the incredible work from New York’s future architects, photographers, illustrators, painters, printers, fashion designers, sculptors, and fine artists. You can be inspired too--O.V.A. will be held on April 30th, 2015 at the Saratoga Springs City Center. Artwork is on display all day and is open to the public.

Science BowlOn March 7th, Brown School students were awarded 1st place in the model car competition of the New York State Capital District Regional Middle School Science Bowl. We sent two teams of five 7th and 8th grade students, each with their own model car powered only by the force of gravity acting upon two kilograms of mass. Both of our model car and launcher designs were successful and performed well against other local schools. In the question-based competition, both teams made it to quarterfinals! Go Brown School!
