INSTITUTE ELIGIBILITYTo be considered for the institute, a student must meet ALL of the requirements in Part A and AT LEAST ONE of the criteria in Part B. It is to your benefit to check all that apply in Part B.

PART A:

Student must show an interest in writing or visual storytelling, as evidenced by class participation, clips, or extracurricular involvement.

Student must exhibit good behavior and good school citizenship, as determined by teacher recommendation.

Students must be able to participate in and contribute to cooperative learning, college-readiness and academic enrichment activities.

Student must be able to help establish and maintain a safe camp environment.

Student must complete the institute application and obtain parent/guardian permission to participate.

PART B:

Have a linguistic or cultural background different from those that predominate in Oregon’s secondary school system.

Be from a low-income household (as determined by student’s eligibility for free or reduced-price meals).

Be from a household with an educational attainment level of a high school diploma or less.

Have a documented disability or was eligible for special education services sometime during K-12.

SPREADING THE NEWSHigh School Journalism Institute is a unique opportunity for you to get actual hands-on experience in journalism.

The eight-day, no-cost institute runs from July 21 to 28 at the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis. Students stay in residence halls on campus, work with professionals from The Oregonian/OregonLive and use Orange Media Network’s state-of-the-art facilities.

With guidance, the participants use real journalism skills to report and photograph a 32-page newspaper, as well as blog and produce multimedia pieces for The Oregonian’s website, OregonLive.com. Students also will get a chance to explore the campus and meet members of the award-winning university newspaper, “The Daily Barometer.”

Travel vouchers might be available for students who need transportation to and from the OSU campus.

The experience at the institute will help show you that journalism is an important career that might be the right choice for you.
