Ponyo is a beautiful animated film created by the legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki takes viewers on a journey by ocean and land through the connection of a little goldfish girl who falls in love with a boy. Through their connection, magical things happen and the balance of nature and life is at the center of it all. Themes of acceptance, Love, respect of the ocean and planet, balance and strength are all found within the film; giving us an opportunity to reflect on these contemporary themes in consideration of our own lives as people who live by the sea. Feel free to bring snacks and drinks. Popcorn will be provided! It’s OK to bring pillows or mats to be comfortable. After the film is over, kids are encouraged to ask questions or make commentary in a group discussion. Friday, August 9 • 5:30 to 7 pmThe prelude to the kumulipo, a ~ 2000 line Hawaiian creation chant, describes the formation of the universe and precedes an extensive description in the chant of the evolution of life forms on earth, through the establishment of the first humans. COMPASSIONATE COMMUNICATION

Transform Your Worldwith Mark Longo, NVC Practitioner

Sunday, August 25 • 10 am to NoonIn life, we spend a lot of time learning things such as grammar, math, how to drive…but in terms of communication we get minimal guidance. It’s no surprise that unskilled or difficult conversations generate frustration, fear, isolation and anxiety for everyone involved.

Compassionate communication, also known as NVC, changed my life 15 years ago. It helps me to build connection and find deeper meaning with others, which in turn brings clarity, creativity and inspiration to relationships and life in general.

The five (5) elements, NVC founder Marshall Rosenberg created as tools for improving communications are transformational. Compassionate Communication offers a platform for personal growth. My goal for this class is to light a fire of desire inside you for learning and practicing new ways of communicating in terms of receiving (hearing) and expressing. Come have a good time learning how “to drive” a new type of communication.

WHAT’S HOT in ENERGYon the BIG ISLAND

with Marco Mangelsdorf

Thursday, August 15 • 6 to 7:30 pmWith so many forces in play, the life and times of energy issues on our Big Island home are in a dynamic and turbulent period! Will Puna Geothermal Venture come back online? Will the proposed Hu Honua power plant get spiked once and for all? How much more solar and wind feeding into our island’s grid is practically possible? Is utility-scale

solar and storage the way to go? Is battery storage now cost-effective? Is hydrogen as an energy source grounded in reality or an illusional panacea?

While coming up with definitive answers to these questions is a rather high bar, there’s never been a juicier time than the present to chew over these questions. I’ve been a part of the energy scene on the island and in the state for more than 40 years as a business owner and academic and look forward to taking the deep dive into this talk-story at Tutu’s House.

Marco Mangelsdorf is President, ProVision Solar, and Director of Hawai‘i Island Energy Cooperative and lecturer on energy politics at University of Hawai‘i, Hilo and University of California, Santa Cruz.

25Thanks to Tutu’s House, our community is more informed, involved, and intentional about making the best possible decisions for our personal wellbeing . We’re also more connected!

Take charge of your health at any age!

Have you ever felt our health care system was too complex to understand? Imagine you’re starting out in your adult life!

While the pediatric care model relies on parental involvement in decision-making, a young adult transitioning to the adult care model must navigate the health care system just as they simultaneously begin taking responsibility for their own health.

Join Will Chapple, MD, of Paniolo Pediatrics & Family Medicine on Friday, August 2, 5:30 – 7 pm, for Graduating From Your Pediatrician, an empowering presentation and discussion designed to help young adults, ages 18 to 21, make the expected transition from a child-oriented pediatrician to an adult-oriented health care provider.

One of the concerns that often arises as part of our health care journey is cost. One participant at the June presentation of Ways to Save Money on Medical Expenses learned she can use a website to lookup the cost of her prescription medication at different pharmacies on island. She was surprised that the cost of the same drug can vary drastically from one pharmacy to another. She plans to use the website to help her save money on medications in the future.

Tami Rockholt, RN and Michael Fossey, MS, will return to Tutu’s House to present Ways to Save Money on Medical Expenses on Friday, August 23, 5:30 - 7 pm, to empower you to better navigate the financial aspect of your health care journey. Medical costs and insurance can be confusing. Medicare, Advantage plans, supplements, and prescription plans. What is the

best option for you and are you getting the most out of the money you spend for healthcare services? Learn how and where to search on the internet for the best hospitals and the best prices. Coupons for prescription drugs? You’ll gain a better understanding of Medicare and supplemental plans, prescription pricing and coupons, hospital ratings, and medical billing.

Because of her mother’s Alzheimer’s disease, Maureen has spent years studying how to keep our brains functioning well. Forget Sudoku and crossword puzzles. In this series, explore the teachings of leaders such as David Perlmutter, MD; Dale Bredesen, MD; Mary Newport, MD; Max Lugavere and others. You’ll have

time to plan what changes you’d like to make and get ongoing support for your efforts. Whether you’re worried about disease or simply want to feel as sharp as possible in your career, friendships and life, come learn the most important habits to protect and enhance your brain’s fitness, so you can thrive at any age!

North Hawaii Hospice

Wednesday, August 14 • 11 am to NoonNorth Hawaii Hospice (NHH) has been providing Hospice care for the North Hawai‘i community for over 30 years. But we still hear comments and confusion in the community about what it is we really do.

For those whose lives have been touched by our caring staff and volunteers—they know, and many wish they had called Hospice sooner. But the questions still abound—What is the difference between Supportive Care and Hospice Care, and what is Palliative Care? How can I know if my friend, parent or spouse is ready for Hospice, Palliative or Supportive care? Can I call Hospice myself? Shouldn’t my doctor be the one to suggest these options? Is Hospice a place? Who’s going to pay? How much Hospice care is optimal?

The questions surrounding the decision to discuss Hospice include; cultural beliefs, fear and simple misconceptions which often delay the call to Hospice and thus delay the help, compassion and expertise our Hospice team delivers. In fact, nearly one-third of Medicare patients who received hospice care in 2016 only received it for seven (7) days or less. But if the patient is eligible, they can receive specialized care, medications, medical equipment and supplies related to the terminal illness months earlier. So how do you know when it’s time to make the call to Hospice?
