Thank you Thank you to Carolyn Menard for coordinating the spe-cial “Moving Day” a few weeks ago, and to the volun-teers who participated in the St. Bede Back to School Clea-up Day last Saturday morning. We had a lot of great hands to help spread mulch on the playground, weed the garden, and wash the cafeteria chairs. Something to Think About… Humility is the only true wisdom by which we prepare our

minds for all the possible changes of life. George Arliss

Pastor’s Note

Be Humble! Today celebrate the Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. The read-ings focus on humility.

In the first reading from the Book of Sirach, we read how a teacher talks

about the wisdom of serving God with humility. Ben Sira advises his students to cultivate virtues and develop life-long habits essential to living wisely. Both humility and almsgiving draw the wise person into a right relationship with the Lord.

In the Gospel from St. Luke, Jesus challenges the Phari-sees to invite the poor, crippled, lame and the blind when holding a meal. Luke focuses events such as the context of a meal for opportunities for Jesus to teach. By exercis-ing humility Jesus says the one who humbles himself will be exalted. Humility is a distinctly Jewish virtue and one Jesus embraces as the foundation of his teaching on the Kingdom of God.

As we celebrate this Labor Day weekend, let us be thankful for the blessing gifts of labor God has given us. Please join us for Mass this Monday, at 9 am.

Be Humble!

Parish Assemblies As we move forward to becoming one parish family in January 2020, we are making preparations to merge. To be transparent with our parish communities, Fr. Taylor and I along with the Joint Pastoral and Finance Council will be hosting three assemblies: Sunday, September 22, after the 9 am Mass at Mother of Good Counsel Church and after the 11 am Mass at St. Bede Church and Sunday, September 29, after the 10 am Mass at St. James Church. Please join us for one of the sessions to get your questions answered and hear correct infor-mation. RCIA Do you want to learn more about the Catholic faith? Are you baptized in another faith and would like to be Catho-lic? Are you baptized Catholic but need the Sacraments of Communion and or Confirmation? The Rite of Chris-tian Initiation Program (RCIA) will be starting Tuesday, September 17. Weddings/Funerals/Baptisms Weddings celebrated in the Catholic Community of the East End of Pittsburgh start at 2 pm on Saturdays. A few people have asked to have different start times for their wedding because of later dinner receptions, but we need to keep a set time to avoid any confusion with the priest, organist and wedding coordinators.

Funerals are at 10am Monday through Saturday.

Baptisms can be scheduled either Saturday morning at 11 am or during or after Mass on the weekend at any of the three of our campuses.

Father Taylor’s Reflection

Attendance at banquets and special dinners can become a real challenge. I enjoy sitting at the table with other guests. If invited to a head table I go, but sometimes reluctantly. It is usually the task of the host to assign tables.

In today's Gospel there is no doubt that Jesus is the host and we all are invited guests. The same is true when we attend Mass. Regardless of where we sit, we are equal invited guests and those who are visiting our church should feel the same way. I think one of the real Joys in becoming one parish is that regardless of which church we may attend we are never a visitor. There are no re-served places in the House of the Lord.

The same will be true of all of our Parish Ministries. To our credit we have already begun to see ourselves as one. We also have two very good Catholic schools, St. Bede and Sister Thea Bowman Catholic Academy. We are most welcome to visit volunteer and serve in our two schools.

We have much to be proud of.

STEWARDSHIP The collection for August 25 and September 1

will be reported at a later date.

Please note change in deadline. Bulletin Submissions

are due no later than Noon on Fridays. Larger announcements must be submitted

a week prior to the Friday deadline. [email protected]

Lord God, Master of the Vineyard,

How wonderful that you have invited us who labor by the sweat of our brow to be workers in the vineyard and assist your work to

shape the world around us.

As we seek to respond to this call, make us attentive to those who

seek work but cannot find it.

Help us listen to the struggles of those who work hard to provide for their families

but still have trouble making ends meet.

Open our eyes to the struggles of those exploited and help us speak for just wages and safe conditions,

the freedom to organize, and time for renewal.

For work was made for humankind and not humankind for work. Let it not be a vehicle for exploitation but a

radiant expression of our human dignity.

Give all who labor listening hearts that we may pause from our work to receive your gift of rest.

Fill us with your Holy Spirit that you might work through us to let your justice reign. Amen.

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops 2019

The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers The Catholic Church has a well-

documented tradition on labor and unions, rooted in the human right of association. The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participa-tion in God’s creation. If the dignity of work is to be pro-tected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected--the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic initiative. This year we are aware of injustices that still exist when women and refugees can be denied equal pay for equal work and those who are victimized by human trafficking are forced to work by those who enslave them.

This Labor Day, take a few minutes to reflect on Catholic Social Teaching and the dignity of the worker and work itself. Visit our website for Selected Quotations from Catholic Social Thought on Workers and Labor Unions.
