“But now we must celebrate and rejoice…”
The Fourth Sunday of Lent is traditionally known as ‘Laetare (Rejoice) Sunday’. The mood of the Season lightens, ahead of the coming Paschal Feast. St. Paul urges us to “be reconciled to God”, while Jesus’ Parable of the Forgiving Father describes God’s eagerness to welcome home any who stray. Consoling as that image is, it does not suggest that God condones sin or wants us to persist in it. The point of the parable is that God is generous in forgiving, not that ‘it doesn’t matter’ what we do.
In another tilt toward a ‘culture of death’ masquerading as social progress, the State Legislature approved the Act entitled “Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill”, with the Governor saying “I look forward to signing this legislation into law” (!). No one doubts the anguish experienced by the terminally ill, often in conditions of great pain and impairment, or the distress on the part of family members and caregivers, but the idea that offering patients ‘medical aid’ to terminate their lives is ‘com-passionate’ reveals a serious misunderstanding of that word. Use of pain medication and burdensome life-sustaining equip-ment may be unpleasant and difficult for patients, but true compassion for their plight should arouse sensitive and caring accompaniment of them in their struggle, based on respect for the sacred dignity of each person’s life. Sadly, even with so-called ‘protections’ to ‘prevent abuse’ by doctors, caregivers and family members who might ‘encourage’ patients to choose to end their lives rather than ‘impose’ on others for continued care, the Act moves society toward tolerance of a ‘throw-away mentality’ that is so pervasive. Can’t we do better than to take an active role in helping an ill person to terminate his/her life? As Catholics we do not accept that one has a ‘right’ to end one’s life, which is a gift from God: ‘death with dignity’, which should be everyone’s right, must not become a euphemism denying the roots of that ‘dignity’—the truth that each person is a child of God, deserving, for that reason alone, attentive care that looks to help one respect the gift of life for which he/she is accountable. The Church teaches that one is not obliged to use ‘extraordinary means’ to preserve life when it draws naturally to its close, but insists that no one is entitled to take measures actively to hasten one’s own death or another’s. New Jersey law may permit “Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill”, but that doesn’t make it right or moral. Yes, circumstances at the end of life are difficult for many, but as Catholics we believe we are called to observe a higher law than that of the State, when confronted with a terminal diagnosis for oneself or a loved one. I commend our own State Senate and Assembly members for voting against the Act, despite heavy emotional persuasion and some, we can assume, from financially-interested parties.
We rejoice that Jesus has taken on Himself the weight of all our sin: in Him we find the ultimate proof that God loves us.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.” (Joshua 5:12) Over the forty years that the Israelites journeyed through the desert, God provided them with manna to eat. As soon as they were able to
enjoy the fruits of the Promised Land the manna ceased. Likewise, God’s blessings to us may change over the years but it is important to trust that God will always provide us with all that we need. MEMORIAL DONATIONS
We are accepting Memorial Donations for flowers for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine used for the Liturgies, and the weekly Sanctuary Candle. These items may be donated in memory of someone or to mark a special occasion. A donation of $10 is suggested for the
candles, bread & wine and sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace various items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for memorials of deceased loved ones. Call the Parish Office.
LENTEN PRAYER-BREAKFAST-REFLECTION for Women Wednesday mornings of “Prayer-Breakfast-Reflection” for Women will continue during this 2019 Lenten Season from 6:00 to 6:50 a.m. Please note: This morning’s session will be in the SMS Auditori-um (enter through the side door of the school, directly across from the Sarah Black Rm., Parish Center). COMING UP….The Annual BABKA SALE will take place on Palm Sunday, April 14, in the School Cafeteria after all Masses. This event, always successful, will provide a variety of Easter specialties for your holiday table. Please mark your calendars and support this Rosary-sponsored sale. SACRAMENT of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated here at Mass on Saturday, April 13, at Noon. The Sacrament will be administered to anyone who is ill (including chronic illness). All who are ill or infirm, as well as caregivers, are welcome to receive the Sacrament. Light lunch will follow in the Sarah Black Room. YOUTH MINISTRY– This Sunday we invite all High School teens to join us for our next meeting tonight, Sunday, in the Youth Room at St. Michael’s. Tonight is one of our “Choice Topic Nights”. We will offer 5 “mini-meetings” and members can choose the discussion

A BIG Thank You!… to all who helped support the Youth Ministry Program in our Appeal collection last weekend. All funds collected will help send 52 teens to Osage, WV, for our week-long Appalachian Mission Trip. If you would still like to make a donation, you may drop it off at the Parish Center anytime during the upcoming weeks.
Palm Cross/Flower Sale… The Youth are once again selling Palm Crosses and Easter Flowers. All proceeds will go toward the Appalachian Mission Trip that High School teens will be on during Spring Break in April. Show your support by buying a Palm Cross for your door or home, or to remember a loved one for the cemetery — maybe purchase some flowers for Spring planting. We will sell Palm Crosses NEXT weekend, April 6-7, (9am-7pm) on Saturday, and on Sunday (8am-1pm).
Living Stations Prayer Service … The Youth are hard at work on the annual Stations of the Cross presentation. The Prayer Service will be on Good Friday, April 19 (7:30 pm) here at St.Michael Church. Hopefully, you, your family and friends will join us for this moving prayer experience. The Service lasts about an hour and includes music, reflections and still scenes re-creating the last hours of Christ’s life here on earth.
