Third Sunday of Lent - February 28, 2016 Third Sunday of Lent - February 28, 2016

First of all, thanks to the priests who are presiding at the Masses this weekend: Fathers John Assalone (pastor of St. Francis of Assisi in Henderson), Tom Gross (retired priest from the Diocese of Honolulu) and Max Oliva (Jesuit priest, working in our diocese in areas of worker justice and living at St. Christopher in North Las Vegas.) Many of our staff and myself are in Anaheim,

California, this weekend (Friday through Sunday) at the annual Congress of Religious Education sponsored by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. This event is the nation’s largest annual gathering of Roman Catholics. Last year, over 40,000 attended. This year, from the United States, there are representatives from 46 states (none registered so far from Arkansas, Delaware, Mississippi and West Virginia); Nevada has the second largest number of participants with California, of course, having the vast majority of attendees. From outside the USA, there is representation from: (ranked from highest to lowest of those attending) Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Mexico, Guam, Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Spain, Argentina, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Panama, Thailand, Uganda, Vatican City and Vietnam. There are over 300 workshops presented by 200+ speakers, ranging in topics from personal growth to music to spirituality (in English, Spanish and Vietnamese). Liturgies are presented in these different styles: Black Culture, Care of the Earth, Church on the Margins, Contemplative, Indonesian, Mass of Compassion, Nigerian, Spanish, Syriac, Vietnamese and Young Adult. In the exhibit area, there are 529 booths housing over 200 companies as exhibitors: religious art, music, education and ministry. There is also a variety of entertainment and devotion: contemporary Christian music, Latino composers and artists, an art exhibit, Sacred Illumination, a labyrinth, Sacred Space, a dance for Young Adults and opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. And, finally, there is the opportunity to enjoy the company and camaraderie of friends (new and old) from Holy Spirit, the Diocese of Las Vegas and others from all over. It’s a great time and I look forward each year to attending this Congress. If you want to go next year, the dates for 2017 are February 24, 25 and 26 (Friday through Sunday). Just contact me and I can give you more info and we will advertise it in this bulletin in the Fall of this year. Easter is just 4 weeks away! Besides the victory of Jesus” Resurrection over sin and death, I really want to celebrate as well the victory of our Capital Campaign, “Building God’s House, Our Home”. So, if you have not yet made your sacrificial pledge, please do so ASAP. I know that if everyone of you reading this bulletin participates, we will reach our goal of $8,000,000. There is no pledge too small (or too big, lol!). So, get together with the rest of your household, discuss what you think your level of sacrificial giving could be, pray about that decision and make a generous pledge. God bless you for this act of generosity. Finally, try to attend this Friday’s Lenten event: PRAYER AROUND THE CROSS at 6:30 p.m. in The Upper Room. It is based on a form of beautiful prayer from Taizé in France — one of the places I visited last summer. I know you will enjoy this style of prayer.

NEW BEGINNINGS

A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation

New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. • HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination - Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ’s saving death and resurrection.

Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick 702-459-7778 • HEALING Grief Facilitation - “Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled” (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram 702-459-7778 Next meetings March 1, 15, 29 • CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - “If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member” (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ’s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support.

Sponsor couples needed for Holy Spirit Marriage Prep Program Holy Spirit’s “For Better And Forever” Marriage Preparation program is in need of several more Sponsor couples. Sponsor couples are married couples trained to “journey with” engaged couples as they prepare for lifelong commitment of marriage. Sponsor couples provide for the engaged a working example of a married couple “doing” lifelong marriage. A couple who is trained to serve as a sponsor couple must acknowledge that their life experience of living lifelong marriage is the primary experience they bring to the task of sponsorship. Their training is mostly about clarifying the limits of their role and some tips on how to interact with engaged couples as adults. If you would like to learn more about how you can be involved as a sponsor couple, please email [email protected] or call 702-528-3446.

Silent Prayer In the Atrium, we offer opportunities for silence both at the prayer table and during presentations. At the prayer table, or during an activity like the Silence Game, we begin with a short period of time and progressively lengthen it. The moments of silence will extend the child’s attention span and develop his or her listening skills. Silence helps to focus the child’s inner calm and keep every part of his or her body still. This silence then becomes a vehicle for contemplation. There is no prayer without silence.
