GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTSPRELUDEPlease Stand

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESSBlessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, whose steadfast love is everlasting, whose faithfulness endures from generation to generation. Amen.

Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin. (Silence is kept for reflection.)

Reconciling God,we confess that we do not trust your abundance, and we deny your presence in our lives. We place our hope in ourselves and rely solely on our own efforts. We fail to believe that you provide enough for all. We abuse your good creation for our own benefit. We fear difference and do not welcome others as freely as you have welcomed us. We have not always seen and treated others as made in your image. We sin in thought, word, and deed. By the things we have done and by the things we have left undone. By your grace, forgive us; through your love, renew us; and in your Spirit, lead us; so that we may live and serve you in newness of life. Amen.

Beloved of God, by the radical abundance of divine mercy we have peace with God through ☩ Christ Jesus, through whom we have obtained grace upon grace. Our sins are forgiven. Let us live active lives in hope. For hope does not disappoint, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.Amen.

FIRST READING: Exodus 19:2-8a2[The Israelites] had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain.3Then Moses went up to God; the LORD called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: 4You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, 6but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.”  7So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him. 8aThe people all answered as one: “Everything that the LORD has spoken we will do.”

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING: Romans 5:1-81Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.  6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. 8But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL: Matthew 9:35--10:8The holy gospel according to St. Matthew.Glory to you, O Lord.35Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 10:1Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. 2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.  5These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.

The gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.

SANCTUS (HOLY, HOLY, HOLY)

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Blessed are you, O God of the universe. Your mercy is everlasting and your faithfulness endures from age to age…

Together we lift up our bread and remember that on the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.In the same way, we lift up our drink and remember that after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of Sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

With this bread and cup, we remember our Lord’s Passover from death to life as we proclaim the mystery of our faith:

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Reveal yourself to us in the breaking of the bread…we praise you, O God, blessed and holy Trinity, now and forever. Amen.

LORD’s PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Communion is a sacrament when the Word of God is connected to the tangible elements in the gathered community and received with a believing heart. So, as we together gather around our individual tables, we trust that Christ is present in, with, and, through your bread and wine/grape juice just as he is fully present when we gather in person. Please note: This “home communion” is only commended during our livestream when we are gathered together. The Lord’s supper is not meant to be a private experience. Therefore, if you watch the service on replay, please do not commune yourself.Instructions: After the Lamb of God, Pastor will come to the camera and say “the body of Christ given for you” and the “blood of Christ shed for you.” If you are communing with family, you may (1) have the head of the household commune everyone using the same words and then be communed last. Or (2) have each member of the family take turns communing another member in a circle; first with the bread, then with the wine/grape juice.

Kitchen Renovation Update

SALC 4.1 Progress Report (6/7/2020): In April with the pandemic raging and all of us quarantined at home, there was serious question if we should continue with the kitchen renovation project. The Council conducted a survey of the congregation which showed widespread support to move ahead. The survey results (67 respondents) had 79% voting for strongly agree or agree. Council also challenged the congregation to commit to reach at least $125,000 by August 15 to move ahead. That goal was quickly achieved, and we are very close to having the full $140,000 estimated to complete the project.

As this was going on, the renovation team focused on completing the detailed design for the new kitchen. We also needed to resolve several outstanding (and expensive) issues which arose concerning the Board of Health requirements for a commercial kitchen. Finally on May 29 we received word from the Board of Health that we would NOT be required to install a commercial kitchen! The code gives an exception for churches who provide meals for the needy, and our FACETS and Nurturing Parents ministries meet this requirement. Great news -- we can move forward !!!

On June 1 we signed a contract with Schroeder Design/Build to execute the kitchen renovation at a projected cost of $140,000. This includes all new kitchen appliances and facilities to insure a safe environment for food preparation/warming. These features include a high temperature sanitizing dishwasher, a range exhaust hood which vents outside, and a 3 compartment sink for pot washing.

Schroeder is submitting the plans for permitting which is expected to take about FOUR (4) weeks. They expect demolition to begin the week of June 15 with completion of the entire project by September 11. As we take the kitchen down to the studs, we will have these items available should anybody want them:

• Kitchen cabinets and counter tops• Dishwashers (2) and gas ranges (2)• Stainless steel sinks (2)

Please let me ASAP if you want any of these when we remove them. Otherwise, they will be given to Habitat Restore or trashed.

These are exciting times as we move ahead. I will continue to keep you posted including pictures as we progress.

POC: Rich White ([email protected])

(Rich hosted two Zoom meetings for the congregation to ask questions and give comments on June 8 and 11)

What is the ELCA National Youth Gathering?Every three years, 30,000 high school youth and their adult leaders from across the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America gather for a week of faith formation known as the ELCA Youth Gathering. Through days spent in interactive learning, worship, Bible study, service and fellowship, young people grow in faith and are challenged and inspired to live their faith in their daily lives.

It's time for SALC to start planning for summer 2021! The National Youth Gathering will be held June 29-July 3 2021 in Minneapolis. This amazing experience is for youth who will be in 8th-12th grade for the 20-21 school year. Our aim is to get our group registered by November so the cost to families is just $350 per youth ($150 non-refundable deposit due November 8). Put the dates on your calendar now and stay tuned for more information over the summer!
