29th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Exodus 17:8-13

The book of Exodus tells of the Israelites’ escape from Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. Along the way, they often had to battle local tribes who tried to keep them from passing through their ter-ritory. Today we hear an account of one such incident.

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 3:14-4:2

In today’s reading from second Timothy, the author continues to warn against false teaching. This passage also provides the biblical foundation for our belief about the inspiration of the Bible.

Dear Friends, I am happy to be back to Christ the King after the first phase of my sabbatical. After attending four weeks of Spanish classes in Antigua, Gua-temala, I spent the whole month of September in the mountains of Peru. I was picked up from Cusco airport by Fr. John Prochaska, a mission-ary working in Tocroyo (Hector Tejada), 4.5 hours from Cusco, around 13500 feet above sea level. I arrived there as win-ter was still holding the hills and valleys in its freezing grip, and I thought I would not survive the onslaught of cold winds and freezing temperatures. In addition to cold, I experienced a mild headache for a couple of days because of the altitude. And then, everything turned out so good. I was acclimated to the hills in a couple of days and the people and their traditions had a fascinat-ing sway on me. I had no TV, no wifi and no phone for a month and it was awesome. Fr. John Prochaska took me to the many villages and towns surrounding his parish on mission trips, which included celebration of the sacraments, proces-sions, two pilgrimages and of course, my favorite hobby, hiking the hills. To-gether we hiked a number of mountains, two of which were very memorable and spiritual - Machu Picchu and the rainbow mountain. As we could not get the permit for the famous Inca trail, we took another re-markable Salkantay Trek (or Salcantay Trek), named among the 25 best Treks in the World, by National Geographic Adventure Travel Magazine. Connecting the city of Mollepata, Cusco with Machu Picchu, the Salkantay Trek is an ancient and remote footpath located in the same region as the Inca Trail where massive snowcapped mountains collide with lush tropical rain forests. With more spectacular vistas, the Salkantay to Machu Picchu Trek offered me solitude and quiet contemplation as well as an opportunity to have a heart to heart conversation with a fellow priest, who was loving, under-standing and deeply spiritual. The Rainbow Mountain of Peru, also known as Vinicunca, are stunning and is connected to the spectacular Ausangate Trek. Ausangate mountain itself is considered a holy mountain (or mountain spirit) by local Peruvians and is the deity of Cusco. Since pre-Inca times the mountain has been a place of wor-ship and offerings and this tradition continues today. On this trek we walked through quaint villages, saw beautiful adobe style houses, herds of llamas and alpacas and magnificent views of the Ausangate Glacier (6,385 m / 20,945 ft), the highest mountain in the Cusco region. While returning from Cusco, I spent a couple of days with the priests of the St. James Society in Lima, Peru. I am grateful to Fr. Vince Cotter and the priests of Christ the King for taking good care of the pastoral needs of our parish. Kate Doherty, the interim administrator has done an awesome job and I commend our staff for working together in the past months. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn Spanish and to minister in Peru. I am here to stay until the New Year after which I will embark on the second phase of my sab-batical. Thank you for your prayers, your support and the many expressions of love. Paulson

CTK Random Act of Mercy of the Week: Our ChristLight team, as part of the spir-itual preparation leading up to the week-end, gathered a few weeks ago to make 40 “homeless bags”. These gallon zip lock bags had warm socks, toiletries, a few treats and a bottle of water. Each team committed to meeting someone in need and delivering this merciful package.

“I can en-dure all things through Him who strengthens me.” I heard these words while attending the

ChristLight weekend many years ago. For me, the Christ-Light weekend was a powerful, spiritual awakening help-ing me recognize God’s presence in my life. After I lost my father I felt lost. I found a strength to heal in my grief attending ChristLight. The experience was so impactful I volunteer to serve others each year working the weekend to share the same experience with others. The ChristLight community is my “Church Family”. I have real friends and a sense of belonging to a community where I turn to for spiritual strength when facing life’s challenges like the loss of my mother, potential unemployment, and more recently divorce after twenty-one years of marriage. In all these situations the one constant was the understanding I gained on the ChristLight weekend that God loves me and walks with me on my journey. I invite anyone who desires a stronger connection with Christ and our Heavenly Father to attend the ChristLight XIII weekend. Sign up forms are located in the front of the church. For more information please contact myself Blaine Carter @ 925-963-6168 or Nancy Hartman @ 925-326-4025.
