love to receive both cards and visitors. Gail is at Lake Forest Nursing Home at 2565 Old

Trabuco Road, Lake Forest, CA, 92630. The phone number where she can be reached is

949-860-5259, and she can receive visitors on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Co-Chair Sandy said Henry Segerstrom, who passed away on February 20, 2015 at 91,

was Orange County’s Man of the Century because of the impact he had on Orange

County. Dianne Howe said that on Saturday, February 28, 2015, Fairhaven Mausoleum

will have an open visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The family will have a private

funeral next week. He was a great friend of the Guilds. Co-Chairs Marjorie and Sandy

will send a card to his wife, Elizabeth.

Both Co-Chairs Sandy and Marjorie love visiting the chapters and will come at their

invitations.

Recording Secretary: Susan Kinkade.

Susan asked if there were any additions or corrections to the January 22, 2015, minutes.

There being none, Carol Hunter moved, and it was seconded, that we accept the minutes

as presented. The motion carried. Susan asked the board members to please remember

to sign in and submit their reports the day before the meeting.

First Vice-Chairman Membership: Shari Cipolla.

Please see Addendum A. Shari reported on the New Member Tour held February 10.

New members from nine chapters attended. There were a total of 42 new members plus

8 chapter chairmen with a total of 50 attending. Shari is working on a new membership

form which will be presented later this year.

Second Vice Chairman Ways & Means: Sandy Hovanesian.

All chapters need to communicate with the board regarding fundraisers and bank

statements. Send notices of chapter activities and newsletters to the Chairmen.

Marilyn McCorkle moved that the board approve the WM-ls. The motion was seconded,

voted on and carried.

Ways and Means Chair Sandy likes the new proposed W1-A because it is simplified. She

will present it to the Board of Directors at the March meeting and plans to use it for two

years to see how members respond.

She also said that if chapters don’t turn in their WM-1s for fundraisers, we can’t put their

fundraisers on the calendar, nor can we advertise their events. We need to know what

each chapter is doing so we can help promote the event.

Carol Wilken. These ladies have joined as event underwriters and are helping to fill

tables and spread the word about the event.

Underwriting invitations for A Night of Discovery on April 24, 2015, were mailed

several weeks ago. Sandy B., Marjorie, Mary, and Amy are following up with phone calls

to everyone who was invited to join as an underwriter. This support is crucial in

offsetting event costs. Invitations are almost ready to go to print and will be mailed the

week of March 9.

Co-Chair Mary brought a beautiful cosmetic kit as one of the silent auction gifts. Other

silent auction items include a wine tasting from Carmen Dragon with a knowledgeable

wine taster. Mary thanked all underwriters who are supporting A Night of Discovery.

There will be a raffle again this year, and we have three outstanding raffle prizes:

18K white gold ball and diamond earrings and a Tahitian pearl ring, compliments

of Lugano Diamonds.

One-Year Membership in the Center Room and Donor Lounge.

$1,000 Shopping Spree and One-Year Complimentary Valet Service at South

Coast Plaza Shopping Center.

Carol Hunter and Loretta Freund are doing a great job acquiring silent auction items.

They are in need of beauty items, golf and resort stays, and children’s items to appeal to

grandparents and families. We have a letter and Silent Auction Donor Forms on hand to

use when soliciting an auction item. Carol said many of the silent auction items focus

more on experiences and many fun activities a little out of the box.

We anticipate a great turnout this year and are planning on 250-300 attending. It is

essential to our success that all The Guilds’ members help us spread the word about A

Night of Discovery to all your Chapter members, friends and family.

If you wish to put together a Chapter table for 10, please ask your chapter members to

complete the invitation RSVP card, indicate they will be seated at your Chapter table, and

mail their checks for $135 to your Chapter Treasurer. Your chapter treasurer can mail

one check for $1,350 with all guest names. We’re all looking forward to a fun, beautiful,

delicious and successful evening!

Millie Robbins asked Co-Chair Mary if she could publish easy directions to get to the

Fairmont. Directions will be sent to all Chapter Chairs to help members find the hotel

easily.

Co-Chairs Amy and Mary have negotiated a special hotel rate at the Fairmont for $129

for the night of the event. Valet parking will be $10.

Corresponding Secretary: Barbara (B.J.) Van Alstine.

B.J. announced that lunch after the meeting would be at Onotria Restaurant. 16 board

members are planning to have lunch after the meeting.

Co-Treasurers: Marilyn McCorkle and Carol Hunter.

See report handout. Marilyn reported that right now not much was going on with the

treasury although they are picking up underwriting money, and offered to answer any

questions anyone may have. She said she needed all $300 donations from each chapter,

and there were a number who have not yet paid. Next month she’ll publish the chapters

who are delinquent.

Public Relations Chairman: Diana Hardy.

Press releases and calendar listings have been prepared for A Night of Discovery and

Tropical Paradise, as well as a press release for announcement of this year’s recipient of

the “Inspiration Award,” Gail Daniels. All have been submitted to Tim Dunn for

potential inclusion in local media. In addition, they have been submitted to Karen Drum

for inclusion in March and April’s “Playbill.”

Included with this report is an organizational chart for The Guilds. Please see Addendum

B. Some members are using the words “guild and chapter” interchangeably. As you can

see from the chart, The Guilds is comprised of 7 geographic area guilds, and each guild

has 2-4 chapters in it. These chapters such as Carmen, Crescendo, Stage Door, etc. are

the entities that we (approximately 1000 members) are members of. Together, our

chapters are part of specific geographic area guilds and finally, these individual guilds

make up The Guilds in its entirety. Please make a special effort to use this nomenclature

when referring to The Guilds and individual chapters.

A reminder to all chapters – all marketing materials that will be circulated outside the

membership of your chapter should be reviewed by me and/or Tim Dunn, Director of

Public Relations, Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Do not leave it until the last minute;

allow time to make any changes requested.

Parliamentarian: Gail Daniels.

Absent

Center Liaison: Dianne Howe.

There are several Guilds Nights offers available:

deadline to order is March 6.

Motown the Musical for Wednesday, June 24 (7:30 p.m.) and Sunday, June 28

(6:30 p.m.) – deadline to order is May 8.

You can still order tickets for the August 13 (Thursday 7:30 p.m.) performance of

Phantom of the Opera – deadline is June 26.

Offers to watch for:

Annie for May 20 and 23

Eifman Ballet for June 6.

The Sleeping Beauty ballet which plays March 3-8 has lavish costumes designed by

Richard Hudson, who designed the sets for the Lion King. The costumes were sent from

New York by truck, but the sets were shipped by boat. Because of the dock strike in

Long Beach, there was tremendous concern whether the sets would be available in time

for the production. Fortunately there were unloaded a few days ago and are available for

the production.

Area Guild Reports: Co-Chair Marjorie said that two Area Guilds would give their

reports today: Huntington Harbour Guild with Carol Kirkwood, and Laguna Area Guild

with Barbara Biniasz Gladden, Betty Batenburg and Sandy Hovanesian who will

personally give their chapter reports.

HUNTINGTON HARBOUR GUILD – Carol Kirkwood.

Flying Dutchman: Chairman – Carol Kirkwood.

The February event for Flying Dutchman was a Valentine’s luncheon/meeting held at the

Mile Square Park Clubhouse in Fountain Valley. A delicious buffet lunch was served,

and we were entertained by the talented Surf City Singers. We were honored to have

Guilds’ Co-Chair Marjorie Gorum and her husband Larry join us in the festivities! This

was the chapter event where we also held our annual White Elephant Sale. The event

was well supported with donations and purchases by our members. We cleared more

than $500 on the sale.

LAGUNA AREA GUILD – Millie Robbins.

Debussy: Chairman - Sandy Hovanesian.

Debussy’s annual Super Bowl Party was a fun gathering of friends sharing good food,

games and a little football.

On March 12, members and guests will have a docent-led tour of three new exhibits at

the Laguna Art Museum, followed by lunch at Las Brisas.

We are putting together a glass blowing workshop in April with one-on-one guidance

from two or three glass artists. The class size is limited, but if there is space available,

we will open it to other Guilds members. Become an artist for a day!

Mozart: Chairman – Barbara Biniasz Gladden. Report read by Millie Robbins.

Chapter members are busy pulling together our major fundraiser of the year, a fashion show and

luncheon on March 11. It will be held at the El Niguel Country Club and all are invited. Six of

our members will model the clothing, so we will see all sizes, instead of slinky professionals.

There are some great Silent Auction donations and several valuable baskets in our Chinese Auction.

If you would like to join us and support our efforts, please call Bev Germain 949-499-5910.

I had the pleasure of attending the Richard Rodgers Valentine Dinner-Dance and what a special

event it was. Put it on your calendar for next year.

From the Wings – Chairman: Betty Batenburg.

The February 18 New Members reception at Nancy Field’s house was great success!

Three of our 5 new members were present and most of the Board members. After

introductions the new members shared information about themselves, as did the board

members. As always, the Board came with plenty of delicious appetizers and wines, and

all had a good time!

The Ways and Means committee is busy putting the final details together on our March

17 Fashion Show/Luncheon Fundraiser at Cedar Creek Inn in San Juan Capistrano. Cost

is $45.00 per person! Fashions are by Chico’s and Chico’s offers a 10% discount to all

Wings shoppers that day. The good news is that Chico’s is only a few doors away from

the Inn.

A bus trip to The Getty Museum on Mulholland drive is planned for April 29. We will be

spending the day visiting several of the exhibits and the beautiful spring gardens, and

having lunch on our own. Cost is $50.00 per person.

CENTRAL COUNTY AREA GUILD – Barbara Benson.

Crescendo – Chairman: Sharon Algeo.

Crescendo Chapter will have their final program in the 2014-2015 Celebrity Series on

March 12. Eric Marchese will entertain us with his ragtime piano music. After the

program we will reveal the series for next year. We are asking all members to bring a list

of prospective members to this program. A list will be drawn and the winner will receive

a Waterford crystal bowl donated by one of our members. We will vote on the slate of

officers as presented by the Nominating Committee.

Alla Gitana - Chairman: Cathy O’Connell.

Alla Gitana members were treated to a wonderful Valentine week luncheon at the Red O

Restaurant in Fashion Island. The innovative menu and the beautiful, lit-fireplace patio

added to our fun. We were so honored that Co-Chair Marjorie attended the luncheon. She

spoke to us about the wonderful things that the Center does for the children in Orange

County. She also got us very excited about the upcoming party in April, and we presented

her with our check for $300. Alla Gitana definitely wants to get a table together for the

fundraiser. We will see you there!

NEWPORT HARBOR AREA GUILD – Kay Fukunaga.

Cabaret Chapter – Co-Chairmen: Terry Thacker & Marlys Haberman.

As part of as membership drive, the Cabaret Chapter has launched a social media project

on the meetup.com website. Our first social event advertised was on February 12 at the

Newport Beach Tennis Club. This will be an on-going recruitment project for the chapter.

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, members of the Cabaret Chapter enjoyed a delicious

three course dinner and dancing on February 13 at the Villa Nova in Laguna Niguel.

The CP Restaurant, Newport Beach, was the location for the Cabaret Chapter’s Annual

Academy Awards Party on Sunday evening, February 22. Dinner and prizes were part of

the event.

The monthly Happy Hour and General Meeting for the chapter was held at the Newport

Beach Tennis Club on February 25.

Camelot Chapter – Co-Chairmen: Debra Adams & Kay Fukunaga.

Camelot Chapter was planning to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a Newport Harbor Duffy

boat tour and lunch during the week of February 16, however the chapter lost a great

member and friend on January 27, a few weeks before this planned event. We are all

saddened with the loss, and gathered for a “Celebration of Life” instead, on Feb. 19 at

Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.

South Pacific Chapter – Chairman: Helen Timpe.

No Report.

Performing Arts Juniors Chapter – Chairman: Michela Engle.

I met with members of The Guilds’ Board of Directors on Wednesday (Sandy Bass,

Marjorie Gorum and Marilyn McCorkle) to discuss what we can do to keep the chapter

alive and to get it to thrive.

We came up with a few ideas, and I sent an email to the ladies at PAJ with our thoughts

and questions:

1. Instead of trying to open up new chapters of PAJ at different schools (which we would

love to do in the future), we were thinking what if we expanded your chapter to include

different schools. For example, maybe we would get students from Huntington Beach,

Laguna Beach High Schools and/or OCSA to join. Would this be something that could

be manageable for your program at this time? Maybe we could start up in September so

we would have time for recruitment. Since my son goes to Huntington Beach, I could

talk with the school and see if there is an interest. I really do believe that there will be

one. I would especially try to get some freshman students and parents interested so they

Page 9: “DISCOVER THE ARTS” › scfta › media › General › get... · Guilds’ Board and Chapter Chair meeting 3/26/2015 at Marc Pridmore April: West County Tropical Paradise 4/7/2015

9

could be trained to take over after the older students leave.

2. I was also thinking that we need some kind of hook to get students interested in

joining the PAJ Chapter. Kids always think....what is in it for me? (I know going to see

shows is a good one.) Does PAJ have access to Guilds Night discounts? If not we could

potentially add that.

Also, maybe we could open it up also to kids that love Dance, and maybe let them have

access to dress rehearsals. I also think having different schools will allow the kids to meet

other kids that have their same interests at heart.

3. I also know that there is a scholarship available for one or two students per year. That

also is a nice bonus. FYI, I have been contacted by the foundation that it is time to start

the application process. The scholarship this year is about $666. Do we round this

up? What have you done in the past?

4. Another hook for the kids to get them to want to join is if they could get community

service hours. Community service always looks great on a college application. There

was some discussion about having the kids help out at "Movie Mondays."

NORTH CENTRAL AREA GUILD – Nancy Tutor.

Arturo Toscanini - Chairmen: Marilyn McCorkle.

On February 5 our chapter had a lovely luncheon and BUNCO day at the home of

Chairman Marilyn McCorkle. Twenty-two members and guests were present. We were

pleased to welcome Guild’s Co-Chair Marjorie Gorum to roll those dice, but I don’t think

Lady Luck was on her side. The day was full of fun, but the weatherman did not co-

operate as there were clouds and fog throughout the day. Our next luncheon will be in

April.

Arthur Fiedler – Chairman: Angela Friedman.

February is the time for our chapter’s annual mini fundraising duplicate bridge game and

luncheon at Yorba Linda Country Club. We chose Presidents Day so more members

could come, but of course some had prior commitments. We had a fantastic luncheon,

and thirty members and guests enjoyed the lovely atmosphere and a great game. Event

chairmen Joanne Thompson and Marsha Cook did a bang up job. Doris Muschek

donated jewelry and shopping at Nordstrom for our raffle. Next month we look forward

to helping youngsters enjoy their time at the theater.

SOUTH COUNTY AREA GUILD – Karen Fullerton.

Beverly Sills – Chairmen: Judy Kelley.

We are currently very busy working on our fashion show event “Beyond the Sea” to be

held on March 7, at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. Members are sharing their many

talents and our event is coming together perfectly. We currently have 151 reservations.

Our fashions will be provided by Chico’s, Piajeh and Matilda Jane Clothing for children.

We are looking forward to having many Guilds’ members enjoy the day.

On February 17, we had an “Afternoon of Singing and Sweets” event at my home in Coto

de Caza. It was an afternoon event. Coffee, wine and iced tea, cookies and chocolates were

served. Our entertainment was Clarissa Lecce, renowned opera singer and winner of the

2004 and 2006 “Tomorrow’s Stars at the Center.” She was accompanied on the piano by

her mother, Christine Lecce. It was a wonderful performance of beautiful love songs in

honor of Valentine’s Day. They lingered until the end of our business meeting and we all

enjoyed talking to them.

Irving Berlin – Co-Chairmen: Joanne Gates and Beverly Stavro.

Our February 3 business luncheon was held at The Vintage Restaurant in San Juan

Capistrano. We were so honored to have Dianne Howe, Director of Support Groups at the

Center, speak on the art of ballet, its history with so much wonderful information on

melding of the dance with the music and much, much more. Dianne is so knowledgeable

on this art and was extremely interesting in her explanations. Irving Berlin wishes to

express their thanks to her for taking time from her busy schedule to delight us with her

expertise.

Placido Domingo – Chairman: Ilana Richmond.

On February 11, 15 members and friends of Placido Domingo Chapter went to the taping

of Wheel of Fortune. Adrian Nicolary was able to get us V.I.P. tickets, and we were given

tee shirts, baseball caps and bags. We had a group photo taken. It became a mini fundraiser

as we charged $10.00 per person to attend. We were delighted to have Co-Chair Sandy

Bass as our guest and for her to be able to be acquainted with our members.

Richard Rodgers – Co-Chairmen: Isabel Messinger & Adele Sarkissian.

This month we hit the high point of Richard Rodgers’ activities with our major fund raiser

– our Valentine’s Dinner Dance, held this year at the San Juan Hills Golf Club on February

13. We were honored to have Co-Chair Marjorie Gorum and Barbara Biniasz Gladden and

their husbands among our many guests. It was a Friday the 13, but it proved to be a lucky

charm! Thanks to the great team effort of all our members, the event was a huge success

and, to quote Marjorie, "a fabulous party." With delectable food, fine music, great dancers,

and wonderful prizes, we raised almost $3,000 for the Center.

On March 4, all eyes will be on the runway as Chico’s presents a fashion show for us at

the Café Mozart in San Juan Capistrano. Six of our own ladies will model clothes from

Chico’s spring catalog, and we will all enjoy a discount on our purchases. Our

Nominations Committee will also present a preliminary slate of officers for the 2015-16

Season, in preparation for the election in April.

WEST COUNTY AREA GUILD – Margaret Ann Vincent.

Carmen: Co-Chairs, Jackie Olstad and Michela Engle.

We have had a fantastic February. We made almost $500 at our Chico Fashion Show

fundraiser. Then we went off to Tommy Bahama’s for lunch. We were honored to have

Co-Chair Sandy Bass speak to us about our exciting upcoming The Guilds’ A Night of

Discovery. We are now working on our Western Area Guild fundraiser on April 7, called

Tropical Paradise.

Center Stage – Chairman: Margaret Ann Vincent.

A “Nibbles and Wine Party” was held at the home of Barbara Sullivan. Our guests had

an enjoyable time, tasting several hors d’oeuvres and wines. Center Stage is planning to

attend the Neil Diamond Salute at the Concert Under the Stars, Saturday, August 8.

Tickets need to be purchased now as it is selling out fast. If interested talk to Louise

Costa. Center Stage is joining the West Area Guild in preparing the M. S. Duck Club to

transport you to a Caribbean Island with music, food and dancing on April 7, 2015.

Please join us in this fun adventure.

Stage Door - Co-Chairmen: Delphi and Bob Ballinger.

Stage Door Members gathered at the Lumberyard in Laguna Beach for dinner before

going to see Hershey Felder as “Irving Berlin” at the Laguna Playhouse. We are busy in

our cooperative effort with the West Area Guilds in preparing a Tropical Paradise

evening at the Duck Club on April 7. Everyone is invited.

Annual Conference Chairman - Loretta Freund and Carol Hunter.

Save the date for the Annual Conference on June 2, 1025.

Children at the Center – Eileen Cirillo.

The upcoming Children at the Center bus-in days are in March and April.

Reminders are being sent to the Chapter chairs that have signed up for the remaining bus-

ins since I need the count of chapter volunteers one week prior to their bus-in date.

Remaining bus-in performance dates are:

Effective yesterday Wednesday, February 25, the Center’s newly redesigned website

went on line. You will no longer use the username “guilds15” and password “guilds15”

to access The Guilds website.

Detailed instructions will be emailed to the chapter chairs to forward to all your members

when all the little glitches have been worked out. In the meantime, you can go on line to

www.scfta.org and check out the new website. It has totally changed and looks beautiful

as well as being easy to use.

You can log in by clicking on My Account or Login at the top of the page. If you have

established an account when purchasing tickets for a performance, you will use that

username and password to get into your account. If you don’t have an account, you can

set one up by clicking on Register Now button under the Register for New Account

section.

When you get into your account, the system knows that you are a member of The Guilds

and will list all of your upcoming ticket purchases as well as your account information

which you can edit as needed. By clicking on My Membership, you will also see what

support groups you are part of.

Don't forget to send in your fundraising flyers so they can be posted on The Guilds
