My dear Parishioners,
It should come as no surprise to anyone who follows the
activities of Pope Francis that his popularity in the USA has
begun to wane. The latest Gallup pole finds that his rating
here has dropped especially among the more extreme capi-
talistic types, including, of course, a number of Catholics. A
dominant culture that enjoys showmanship, expects to be entertained. But when the entertainer gets serious and starts
addressing real down-to-earth issues, the audience tends to
tune out.
Francis is a fascinating showman, even when he is doing
things and going places that many of his observers would
never hazard. But when he speaks directly to the whole
world “On the Care of Our Common Home,” as in his first
encyclical Laudato Si, and follows up, as he did recently
during his visit to South America’s three poorest countries,
challenging the world’s inequalities and the apparent indif-
ference of the “haves” toward the “have nots,” then it is time
to switch the channel. This is unfortunate, but not unex-
pected in an environment that encourages disengagement
from the things that threaten power and pleasure and control.
Francis is simply and directly warning all of us that we can-
not divorce morality from politics, economics, science, technology, and every other aspect of human existence. He
insists that those who control so many of these fields of hu-
man endeavor must stop acting like selfish children and
begin taking their fair share of responsibility for the sad con-
dition of a world that the whole human family must call its
home. He is reminding all that we were made for love and
not money and whatever money can buy. In other words, he
is providing an examination of conscience regarding the care
of creation for everyone including himself.
We all know how painful an examination of conscience can
be. That’s why so many of us keep putting it off or ignoring
it altogether. Yes, Francis is inviting us to reclaim the earth.
But we have to first reclaim the human spirit and with it, the
ability to distinguish right from wrong, and more important-
ly, the difference between finite and Infinite. - Fr. Jerome
We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of
Mrs. Hazel Brooks who passed from this world on Wednesday, July 15th, 2015.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Paul of the Cross
at a date to be announced. May her soul and the souls of all
the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.

EVANGELIO JUAN 6….
llenaron doce canastos.
Entonces la gente, al ver la senal milagrosa
que Jesus habia hecho, decia:
“ Este es en verdad, el profeta
que habia de venir al mundo.”
