Its all systems go as the 34th edition of the KCB Guru Nanak Rally heads to the picturesque Longonot slopes.

The event, which is one the longest running Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) events on the Motorsport Calendar, revolves around Naivasha and its environs. An energy-sapping drive through the scenic Kedong Ranch, Ndabibi/Aqcuila Farm as well as the run around Suswa/Kongoni should offer crews a taste of the volcanic ash soil.

Guru Nanak is significant and crucial to many of the top class contenders given that some Championship titles could be sealed at this penultimate and typically challenging occasion of the KNRC season. Last year’s Guru Nanak was indeed the toughest rally considering the rockery crew had to contend with in the Great Rift.

Baldev Chager and Dennis Mwenda are keeping their fingers crossed simply because they will be crowned KNRC and 2WD champs respectively if nothing unexpected happens along the way. Baldev, who won four out of eight stages in Kisumu while trying to recover

from an early puncture, only needs a top 10 finish to recapture the title he first won in 2008 and lost to Carl Tundo in 2009.

Also going for the jugular is veteran Aslam Khan who is resting his championship winning Porsche 911 in the run up to the KQ Safari Classic Rally. He is preparing a new Porsche 911 for Guru Nanak.

The Spectator Stage is situated at the foot of Longonot Slopes (near Longonot Gate) and just a few meters to the flying finish of Kedong Ranch-Longonot competitive stage which will be repeated twice. A Remote Refuel is located a few meters from Longonot Railway station.

The Main Service Park is situated at Sopa Lodge, Naivasha while the public spectator stage parking is located behind the VIP tent where the “park and walk” policy will be applicable to all and sundry.

A colourful prize giving ceremony at Sikh Union which has exciting home-club trophies at stake. The Rally will be flag-off outside Naivasha KCB Branch at 7.30AM on October 6 preceded by drivers briefing and speeches.

Thereafter, cars will take

14.14km transport road section to Kedong Ranch where they will tackle a 32.27km stage through to Longonot and onwards to the 45km CS2 Suswa-Kongoni section which is the longest stage.

Cars will then head to first service then tackle the 12.06km CS3 Ndabibi-Aquila stage and will be back at Sopa for Service B.

They will then repeat the 77.27km Kedong/Suswa loop prior to tackling a liaison distance of 94.24km to Sikh Union for the finish. The event which is associated with Sikhsm, will feature celebrated past winners including Ian Duncan who has won the event a record 11 times and Chager who won it in bravado in 2004.

Competitive mileage is 166km which amounts to 36.34% of the mileage percentage. A massive 291km of transport mileage and a total distance of 458km awaits crews.

What’s more, Guru Nanak welcomes the youngest clerk of the course, Onkar Singh Kalsi.

Meet Hardev Singh Sira, the man determined to chalk-up a rare double in

two of Kenya’s most prestigious rally sport events.

Originally from Eldoret, Britain based Sira has graced every single round of the 2013 Kenya National Rally Championship’s Classic Car Cup held thus far.

Adventure galore in the countryside and historic Safari routes (synonymous with KNRC) are some of the factors that make Sira return to Kenya time and

time again.Racing a Multiple Hauliers sponsored Ford Escort Mexico, Hardev flies in and out of Kenya at will -and this is

to ostensibly grace the scenic landscape that Kenya has to offer.

Hardev has never shirked from keeping ‘Sira Racing GB’ flag flying high. In Nakuru Rally, for instance, Hardev was compelled to give the prize giving ceremony a wide berth as he had dashed to Nairobi to catch his flight back home to Great Britain!

He has a burning ambition to win the 2013 KCB Classic Car Cup which he leads ahead of champion and Porsche 911 driver Aslam Khan.

Excruciating clutch gremlins in Kisumu culminated into his retirement but Sira, who leads the Classic car Cup with 315 points, is at pains to recover lost ground during Guru Nanak Rally which is associated with his community.

After missing most of this year’s KNRC two times KNRC champion and undoubtedly one of Kenya’s most thrilling

drivers, Alastair Cavenagh is finally back in action next weekend at the KCB Guru Nanak Rally.

Cavenagh navigated by championship winning co-driver Gavin Laurence will however not be challenging for top spot on the event as he will be participating in a 1976 Mk 2 Ford Escort. Former World Championship winning co-driver Phil Mills (navigator for Petter Solberg) who has built Cavenagh’s car for this year’s East African Classic Safari Rally will be jetting into the country next week to monitor the car’s performance. Mills’s company Viking Motorsports from mid Wales has entered 3 cars in the Classic and Phil is keen for one of them to achieve a podium finish. ‘ It will be interesting to see how the car performs and we hope to learn a lot for the classic ‘ said Cavenagh ‘ I am sure there will be an interesting battle between the 2 WD entrants in the Guru Nanak with several competitors using the event as a shake down..although it seems almost flippant to be talking of sports at a time when the nation is recovering from such a tragedy as recently experienced, life must go on and by doing so, we demonstrate to the terrorists that they can not and will not prevail’ added Alastair who has pledged to donate his entire sponsorship money for the event to the victims of the Westgate mall disaster.

Champion Carl “Flash” Tundo sped to victory during KCB Kisumu Rally 2013 but leader Baldev Singh Chager staged a stunning fightback

to inch closer to the Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) title success.

Nevertheless, youngsters won the hearts of several rally lovers what with an aggressive run in the lakeside region.

Although the youngsters may not be eligible to sit around the same dinning table with Kenya’s high-flying ‘speed merchants’, their uncanny knack in cockpit battles was a clear indication that they must have surely graduated eating from the crumbs.

No sooner had the dust settled in opening stage than the youngsters (Jassi Chatthe, Rajbir Rai and Manvir Baryan) proving that could no longer be taken for granted-if the stage times witnessed thereon were anything to go by.

Tundo had quite some nerve nevertheless, posting a total time of 1:40.01hours in the Equator Motor Club (EMC) tour what with a 2.43minutes margin ahead of home-boy and fast-rising Chatthe while a hard-charging Baldev Chager won accolades as ‘the biggest mover’ for working his way up the leaderboard

from 17th place in the 26km CS1 Ndurio stage to third overall albeit a massive 4.34 minutes from Tundo!

The podium position didn’t come on a silver platter though for Boldy,it was maximum attack all the way for the 2008 KNRC Champion who hopes to rack up a second career title.

Chager had his first stage run stymied with a picture just 5km from TC1 start at Ndurio. But Chager bounced back with winning 4 out of 8 stages (CS 3, 4, 7, 8) to justify his status as one of Kenya’s fastest Division 1 drivers.

Chager’s navigator Ravi Soni described Kisumu as one of his best rallies in recent times.

“We rallied from 17th to third and worthy of note was how Boldy was pushed the EVOX. We had lost over 5 minutes on CS1 after the puncture because we drove on it for approximately 7 kilometres before stopping. We achieved the podium also because some drivers ahead of us had issues: like Ian had a puncture and Manvir retired,” said Ravi.

For Jassi, it was really a scintillating occasion to chalk up a maiden career podium on home turf and with navigator Gugu making a comeback since the duo rolled out in Safari.

This was indeed Jasi’s first outing after joining the now-fancied “EVOX craze”.

“I’m now coming to grips with the new car though I didn’t start well in the

initial sections but as the rally wore on, I got better and better,” said Jasi.

Gugu Panesar was all smiles: “The first two morning stages were quite slow for us since the diffs were not functioning well. At service in, we rectified the problem then it was Jasi’s best ever drive. He drove exceptionally fast but carefully and the EVOX behaved perfectly well.

with fourth considering puncture gremlins that dipped him to the position. Azar Anwar managed fifth place while Coast Pekee’s Izhar Mirza “Izzy” settled for sixth.

Jasmeet Chana finished 7th followed in the order Hardeep Rehsi while another youngster Farhaaz Khan was 9th.

Tundo oozed confidence in CS1 Ndurio stage and set the fastest time of 18.48 minutes, thus beating Duncan by an 18 second margin while Rajbir Rai was third fastest and Manvir fifth fastest.

But Manvir stunned all and sundry on the first run of the 13.96km CS2 stage in Miwani when he eclipsed Tundo by a mere 1 second.

Chager bounced back to clinch the 15.02km CS3 Simba stage thus eclipsing Duncan by 11 seconds. Chager was at it again on 15.19km CS4 Daraja Mbili stage where he incidentally tied with Flash on 9.57minutes while Jasi was third fastest with 6 seconds from Chager.

At the 26.2km CS5 Chemelil Academy stage Duncan came through with first fastest whilst Tundo was second fastest and Jasi third fastest.

At this juncture it was evident that the race for the Kisumu diadem was only going to be a two-horse race as Chager had no realistic chance of winning it outright considering the CS1 puncture but Tundo was gifted with Duncan’s excruciating puncture at Ndurio 2. This is the same stage which claimed Manvir’s Subaru N16 after a spirited run by the Multiple Hauliers driver - much to his chagrin.

The seventh and penultimate stage took crews through a repeat run of Miwani and it was Chager who came through fastest in 9.31minutes beating Jassi by 9 seconds.

Chager was at it again in the repeat run of Simba stage and was happy that all the hard work paid off impressively.

Out of the 32 drivers who entered Kisumu Rally, only 20 survived the demanding course.

Casualties were Manvir, Onkar Rai, Asad Khan, Tejvir Rai, Alasdair Keith, Ghalib Hajee, Steve Gacheru, Dennis Mwenda who went down a cliff, Stanley Thuo, Hardev Singh Sira (clutch), Edward Maina and Sarit Shah (clutch).

Jasi Chatthe won Division Two class in second overall position.

Raaji Bharij settled for 10th overall, this being his maiden finish of the 2013 KNRC season.

Rajbir’s good run and an initial fast and furious approach was frustrated with mechanical problems and had to contend with 11th overall position.

Omar Mayanja from Uganda won the 2WD Class in 13th overall position but Kenya’s Toyota Vitz driver Sammy Nyorri in 20th place scored a maximum of 80 points in the Formula Two championship points table incidentally with a new female navigator in Qui Mungai calling his pace notes.

Mayanja had been compelled to take up the challenge in Kisumu as a result of racing social media banters when a section of Kenyan rally enthusiasts and F2 competitors appeared to dismissed his stage times in the preceding Pearl rally as unrealistic. Mayanja who was navigated by Kenya’s James Mwangi beat Dennis Mwenda by a humiliating 1.30minutes margin on CS1 compelling his race adversaries “eat humble pie”. But Mwenda replied with beating Mayanja by 14 second on CS2.

Mayanja was a second faster than Mwenda in CS3. But Mwenda was out in CS5 thus

failing in his bid to wrap up the 2WD diadem early in the season.

There were only two 2WD finishers in Kisumu.

Khan brothers Aslam and Arshad won the Classic Car Cup in 12th overall place after their category adversary Hardev Singh Sira (originally from Eldoret) of Great Britain retired in CS1 with clutch problems.

KNRC Debutant Ronak Shah and his Nairobi partner Riyaz Ismail won the S Class in 14th overall place. Jasi won the KNRC Division Two category while Division 3 honours went to Jasmeet Chana in

7th place.Aslam who is the reigning Classic Car

Cup Champion said he is planning to rest his Porsche 911 and strip it well in time for the Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic.

The highly successful Kenya Airways Safari Classic Rally has recently undergone a few changes in its boardroom but none of these will

affect its continuing popularity.The first Safari Classic was held in 2003

and proved to be a tough challenge for competitors driving in classic cars and showed itself to be a worthy successor to the original East African Safari Rally, last held in 2002. To take the rally forward and carry on the good work, a limited company was formed – East African Safari Rally Ltd. The two men who committed themselves to this enterprise as shareholders and directors were Surinder Thatthi and Raju Kishinani. Since then, four more Safari Classics have been held and they have attracted ever-widening interest throughout the world with entries from not just Africa and Europe, but also from America and Australia.

For the last few years Surinder has been a Vice-President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, the governing body of motor sport, and his responsibilities

in that area have gradually increased. In particular, he is charged with guiding the progress of the sport throughout the African continent. He will be staying in place as Event Director with responsibility for devising the route and certain operations of the rally.

His partner, Raju Kishinani, has found a replacement in the person of a well-known and respected friend, Jaideep Vohra, the managing director of Sarova Hotels who is a member of a long-established business family with interests in Kenya. The association between Sarova Hotels and the Safari Classic is already well established since the rally has been using one of the jewels in Sarova’s crown, the Whitesands Beach Hotel Resort just north of Mombasa, as its base for the last four events.

The main sponsor of the Safari Classic is, of course, Kenya Airways who earlier this year announced their continued support of the rally at an al fresco press conference in front of some of Kenya Airways latest passenger aircraft.

Access all areas …Driving a Ford Escort Mk2 on the Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic this November is a gentleman who has more than just a passing interest in seeing the event run efficiently. He is Jonathan Somen (picture) and he is Group Managing Director for AccessKenya, the company that he founded with his brother in 1995. It is AccessKenya that has supplied all the connectivity for the last two runs of this major international rally and they will be the suppliers again this year.This includes using their fibre-optic network to provide a large-capacity connection to the Rally HQ at the Sarova Whitesands Hotel in Mombasa. AccessKenya then provides connectivity at every overnight stop, which is used by the officials to run the rally, and by the press office to communicate with the world.To ensure that the connectivity is up and running and working at all times, AccessKenya provides a technical person who travels around on the event and is available 24/7. As Kenya’s leading Corporate Internet Provider, this provisioning of service to the East African Safari Classic is very much the same as the requirements from their 6,000 plus corporate customers – reliability and uptime are of the essence – and the rally is no exception, except of course that many of its locations are in the middle of nowhere !During the rally, Jonathan Somen will have other things on his mind. His Ford Escort recently suffered a traumatic moment on the Kenyan National Rally Championship round in July, the KCB Safari, when the result of a poor pace note saw the Escort go into a ditch before leaping out and twice clouting a bank on the other side of the road. The car finished up on its side and, shortly afterwards, was described by its owner as ‘a sad-looking Escort’.Fortunately it has friends both in Kenya and back in the UK with Jim Heather-Hayes involved in its strip and eventual re-build while Phil Mills of Viking Motorsports has supplied parts similar to those to be used on his own cars in the East African Safari Classic.

New appointments for Safari Classic The Kenya Airways Safari Classic Rally will have both a new Clerk of the Course and Deputy Clerk of the Course when it next runs in November 2013.Richard Leeke from South Africa will be taking up the role of Clerk of the Course. Richard’s experience in rallying is considerable for he has been for many years one of the leading co-drivers in South African events. He has worked on the Safari Classic as Deputy Clerk of the Course in 2005 and 2007 and thus knows the event extremely well.Bertil Klarin has been one of the principal organisers of the World Rally Championship qualifier, the Swedish Rally since 1986. He started as a rally marshal in 1972 before taking responsibility first for the route and then for managing this prestigious international event. He has also been Deputy Clerk of the Course on WRC candidate events in Germany, Poland, Cyprus and Norway. He is a member of the FIA Rally Safety Working Group and carries out inspections on various WRC rallies. He confesses that his only African duty so far was to be FIA Observer on the 1987 Ivory Coast Rally but is looking forward to sampling East African rallying.

Between them, both appointees bring to the Safari Classic a high level of knowledge and expertise that will strengthen the existing team and enhance the reputation of the rally yet further.The Kenya Airways Safari Classic runs from November 21st to November 29th this year over a route of some 4,100km (2,548 miles) through Kenya and Tanzania. It starts and finishes at the Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort Hotel outside Mombasa on the Indian Ocean. The cars that are eligible to compete must have been built before the end of 1978 and the entry list is already full.
