Bryan Polak, General Manager

Welcome to 2018! Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Where the heck did 2017 go?

2018 promises to be a great one for us as we have a lot planned. We will be doing a membership drive, knock-ing on doors, and letting people know who we are, where we are, what we do, and what the WHCA mem-bership provides them. Look to the website for compa-nies that will be offering discounts to WHCA members. Speaking of WHCA memberships, come and get your card. This will have to be presented to us for all of our free programs, like Free Member Skate, Sticks and Pucks, Tai Chi, etc. If you do not have it on you, we will send you to Carla and Morgan to get one. You MUST present it to access these programs.

We have ad space available in the arena, gymnasium, and squash courts. If you are interested or know some-one who is, please have them contact me at [email protected].

I am looking for talented people who are interested in helping us out. We could use help with fundraising, or-ganizing and running a volunteer group for our events, or other talents. Let’s continue the spirit that started us do long ago and make the original members proud. Please connect with us at [email protected].

Shredded cheese contains cellulose, which is a wood product (a.k.a. sawdust)

so that it doesn’t stick together.

January (Ianuarius in Latin) is from the Latin word for door, ianua, as January was considered the door to the year. Although the god Janus is conventionally thought to be the ori-gin of the month’s name, almanacs of ancient Roman farmers indicate that the patron deity of the month was actually the goddess Juno, not Janus.

Do you have kids 3 or 4 years old? This is for you!

Preschool Open House – January 20th

Preschool is a safe and positive environment where kids strengthen their socialization skills like, how to compro-mise, be respectful, and problem-solve. Preschool pro-vides a sense of self, explore, play with her peers, and build confidence as well. Kids in preschool discover that they are capable, and can do things for themselves and learn how to be less dependent on their parents. They learn how to perform small tasks like helping set snack tables or cleaning up and making decisions like how to spend their free time. Preschool also helps children find answers through exploration, experimentation, and imitation.

The West Hillhurst Community Preschool offer classes for three- and four-year-old children. Using a play-based curriculum, our children develop the social, emotional and intellectual skills to help them lay a strong founda-tion as they move forward through more formal school-ing. Using the in-house facilities of the community centre including the gym, ice rink, soccer field, and play-ground, we are able to offer unique activities as part of our regular curriculum.

We are hosting a Preschool Open House, so you can see how our children learn and socialize by guided playing activities. Please come by to check out our bright and welcoming space, and to meet our Teachers on January 20th from 2:30-4:30 pm. If you are unable to attend our Open House but are interested in visiting our Preschool Classroom and meeting our wonderful teachers, please contact us to schedule a visit.

Registration for the 2018/19 Preschool year will begin at the start of March 2018. We will be offering morning and afternoon classes for three- and four-year-olds. If you would like to find out additional registration details or information on our preschool program, please check out our website: www.westhillhurstpreschool.com

Happy New Year! 2017 was great year and the WHCA Community Gardens had a lot of support! Thank you to:

• Home Depot• Sunnyside Garden Centre• Calgary Co-op• EdelweissImports(pickling kits)• Ten Thousand Villages (rice, spices and beautiful

dish)• The Italian Supermarket (a huge pasta night kit)• Oasis Flower Shop (made arrangements from things

we grew in the Community Garden)• EagleLakeGardenBigYellowBag(generously do-

nated compost/garden soil mix)• Local Families

We could not have done it without your help!

Here are a few things to start getting ready for the 2018 Gardening Season:

Knock off excess heavy snow from tree branches in your yard to avoid breakage.

Recycle your Christmas trees in your green carts by cut-ting into small pieces to make sure cart lid can still close. If you have extra branches (cut no more than 4 ft. long), tie with natural fiber and make sure to place them at least one foot from green cart. Alternatively check out Calgary.ca for drop off sight locations.

Draw up a plan for your garden, then decide which flower and vegetable seeds you need to order. Order in February so you can start your seeds in March.

Give your garden tools a good cleaning, sharpen blades then rub some vegetable oil on the metal parts.

Look on the WHCA website for upcoming Indoor Herb Planting Class in February.

A Few Reasons Why Gardening is Good for Your Health:

Gardening can boost your mood – It involves physical work and being outdoors, both of which can improve your mood and your self-esteem.

Gardening can relieve stress – With all the distractions from smartphones, laptops, etc. it can be hard to direct your attentions to something longer than a few min-utes. Gardening requires a bit of focus, but it engages your mind in a way that allows you to feel more positive and de-stressed.

Gardening can be good exercise – Burn calories by kneeling, bending down, digging, hauling soil, mulch etc.

Gardening promotes healthy eating!

Gardening can help you sleep better.

Gardening gets you out in the sun–ExposesyoutoVitamin D.

Consider joining our Garden Team! You do not need to be an experienced gardener! We will help guide you! If you would like to lend your expertise, we welcome that too! We have a great season ahead with special events and education!

Three months since the southeast became the final quadrant to receive Green Carts, Calgarians are now composting city-wide. I am proud of our city for tak-ing this key step toward waste diversion. Over the past 50 years, 40 million tonnes of garbage were thrown into landfills. By converting our food and yard waste to valuable compostable material, we are working toward a more sustainable future. The City of Calgary is report-ing that Green Cart is already exceeding expectations.

Some highlights include:•Residents composted approximately 29 million kilo-

grams of food and yard waste since the start of the program in mid-July.

•In the first six weeks of city-wide Green Cart service, Calgarians reduced their black cart garbage by an av-erage of 53 per cent compared to the same period last year.

•More than 99 per cent of the material received at the composting facility is the correct material—compostable food, yard, and pet waste.

Council set a target of 70 per cent waste diversion for 2025. The City continues to work on city-wide projects to help meet this target. In the meantime, there are more steps we can take in our everyday lives to make an impact.

The amount of single-use plastics we use in food and household purchases is staggering. In the United States alone, it is estimated that 500 million plastic straws are used every day. Sometimes, pushing for change starts with a simple question. With consumer demand driv-ing supply, a request to your local grocer to stock com-postable single-use supplies, like cutlery and pet waste bags, will encourage environmentally-friendly products to be more widely available. Some local food businesses have already taken proactive steps by switching out styrofoam containers to compostable containers. The power we hold in our purchasing options can create a market for positive change.

Thank you for taking on the challenge for a better and more sustainable Calgary.

To sign up for updates on key community and Ward 7 issues, please visit www.DruhFarrell.ca. To learn more about the Green Cart program, visit calgary.ca/greencart.

Happy New Year! 2018 will be a time of creating and learning in a space that grew and evolved in the past year. 2017 was trulyayearofchanginglandscapesatQueenElizabethSchool, the first year of portable classrooms and a new playground. Now, after two weeks of happy holidays, we are ready to fill our school space with enthusiasm and learning.

Concerts and PerformancesEveryone one had a cheery and cozy time at theDecember20th Bear-y Merry Holiday concert performance by the stu-dents from kindergarten, grades one and two, and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing One. Keep your eyes and ears open for the Spring Concert in March by the students from Grades three through six and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Two.

Art, Movement, and Math ResidenciesTheQueenElizabethgymwasturnedintoacircusforaweekin November. The Safire artist residency brought a week of jug-gling,hulahoops,poisocksandgymnasticstoQueenElizabethand, thanks to the enthusiasm of students for their new skills, a few neighbourhood homes. Grades three to six also had two math-inspired workshops with Calgary’s Decidedly Jazz Dance-works. Combining the math of beats and movement into a fun routine for all. Thanks to Doug, Susan, and Kristen McNaugh-ton, Remax realtors, for the donation that made the Decidedly Jazz workshops possible.

Busy Mid-winterThere is nothing like busy minds and bodies to keep spirits up in mid-winter. January is report card month and key parent and teacher conference time. Kindergarten will also be busy pre-paring for a fabulous field trip to explore the ecosystem of Fish Creek Park.

New Looks for the SchoolTheCalgaryBoardofEducationhasupdatedQueenElizabethSchool’s website, be sure to check it out. The school is also in the final stages of creating a new logo, stay tuned as the de-signers present ideas for the school to consider.

Parking and Drop OffAlthough it is tempting to use the high school or elemen-tary parking lots for pick up and drop off, please don’t. There might be empty spaces, but support staff begin their day at 8:30 or later and must wait for parents to leave if the spots are occupied. High school staff have also struggled to find park-ing when parents take reserved spaces. Please use the street parking available for drop off and pick up. As challenging as that can be, we appreciate your cooperation and respectful re-sponses when asked by staff to not park in reserved parking lots.
