In 2010, John Marciari made worldwide news when he announced that a long-neglected painting in the storerooms of the Yale University art gallery was an important early masterpiece by diego velázquez. depicting the education of the virgin Mary, the work was damaged, had no known provenance, and had never been on public view. While the reattribution began with a connoisseurial judgment, the case is supported further by research on painting in Seville and the first years of velázquez’s career, by the study of provenance, and by technical examination in the conservation laboratory.  Marciari’s lecture presents the case for the painting in a tale of discovery, detective work, and commentary on the art world’s reluctance to admit new works to the canon. fAkes, mistAkes, (deceptions) And discoveries: uncoverinG tHe mysteries of old mAster pAintinGs

Iconic style is fashion that moves beyond the everyday, into new artistic territory. It is the work of visionaries who change the landscape of fashion through original ideas and concepts. For more than one hundred years, fashion designers, models, illustrators, and photographers have all contributed to the making of iconic style, lending their distinct talents. Working collaboratively, designers create, models and celebrities wear, and photographers and illustrators reinterpret fashion for an international audience. the creative genius of fashion designers begins the process. designers transform personal visions into garments with the assistance of skilled artisans. Fundamental too is the role of the wearer. designers often favor an ideal model; someone they feel best embodies their vision. collaborating with these women (and men) of style, the designer is able to promote their particular aesthetic. these public figures help

WHAt is iconic style?  sAturdAy, november 9, 10:30 Am Join lauren Whitley, curator of textile and Fashion arts at the Museum of Fine arts, Boston, for an introduction to the exhibition Icons of Style: Makers, Models, and Images, which explores the interconnected roles of designers, wearers, and the media in the creation of iconic style.  Starting with the creative genius of the designer, the talk will examine how concepts become garments, and are transformed again on the body by the model.  Finally, illustrators and photographers recreate fashion through bravura line, color, and vision, generating some of the most iconic images of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Beginning with the 1893 formation of the Buffalo Bill Wild West, audiences had an opportunity to vicariously experience the sights and sounds of the West through performances of traveling shows. Much like circuses of the day, Wild West shows traveled from town to town on rails, bringing cowboys, sharp shooters, native americans and a variety of animals to audiences around the country.

traveling entertainments of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were big business across the United States. the resources, from performers and equipment to advertising, for Wild West shows and circuses often overlapped. like their counterparts under the big top, Wild West impresarios invested heavily in gorgeous commercial lithographs to advertise the wonders they would present in each town along their route.

Wild West is an exhibition of original posters printed between 1890 and 1950 celebrating great Wild West shows from Buffalo Bill to the 101 ranch. the exhibit will be featured in the Poster gallery of the circus Museum tibbals learning center from September 17, 2013 to February 4, 2014.
