Why a college education?I was a new immigrant from Vietnam in 2006. I did not want to work in the factory like many adult Vietnamese immigrants who do not attend college because they lack English skills and need to work to support their families. Attending college is the only way for me to have a life that I want in America.

Advice to people considering college? Be confident, believe in yourself, look for opportunities and ask for advice and help from people who have diverse experiences.

Dream JobMath Instructor

Future PlansI am transferring to the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities.

Scholarships & Awards• Connexus Energy Scholarship• Leadership Award Grant • All-State Academic Team• Dean’s List• 5-Star Level in Phi Theta Kappa

Why college after high school?I have always believed in chasing my dreams no matter the obstacles. I come from a family where my mother is the sole provider. Neither of my parents attended college. When I was young, my mother started to save money for my college education. She saved up enough for two years at Anoka-Ramsey. I am thankful for this every day of my life. Why choose Anoka-Ramsey? Anoka-Ramsey is only 10 minutes from my home, it meets my financial needs and I can complete a two-year associate in arts degree to transfer.

What would you say to a person considering attending Anoka-Ramsey? Deciding to attend Anoka-Ramsey was one of the best decisions I ever made. I received my two-year degree with the lowest tuition in Minnesota and with a very flexible class schedule. I also gained hands-on experience through Phi Theta Kappa, which has strengthened my academic studies.

What was one challenge you overcame while attending Anoka-Ramsey?When I first started at Anoka-Ramsey, I had no clue what I wanted to do. After a year, I had a high grade point average and I decided on a marketing major. The biggest obstacle I had to overcome was deciding where I wanted to transfer to and what classes I needed to take. The counselors helped me make a decision and assisted in my class selection.

One thing you want people to know about the program you enrolled in?The Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) is a great choice if you are still undecided on your major and if you know you are transferring to a four-year college.

Future PlansPursue a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and become an advertising sales director. I may pursue a master’s degree as well.

Why choose Anoka-Ramsey? Anoka-Ramsey has a good CNET program and is conveniently located between work and home. It is also affordable.

Best Aspect of Anoka-Ramsey?I enjoy the relationships formed with teachers and students. Besides cultural diversity, there is also age diversity. We are all in different places in our lives, and are able to bring that experience into the classroom to help each other.

One thing you want people to know about Anoka-Ramsey?Anoka-Ramsey has a friendly atmosphere, and the education is first rate. The CNET program is second to none. We have access to the networking hardware we are studying, and we get practical

experience that can be carried into the field. The teachers know what they are doing, and the education is a great value for the knowledge gained. Whether you are just starting out, or already in the field, you will get the information you need to succeed in today’s workforce.

Why college after high school? I took a couple years after high school to work full time, but I always knew it was something I would do for myself.

Why did you choose Anoka-Ramsey?They offered the Physical Therapist Assistant program.

Best aspect of Anoka-Ramsey?I liked the convenience of two different campus sites and online courses, as well as the flexibility of class schedules, not to mention credits are incredibly affordable when compared to other schools.

Invest in Your Future

28 763-433-1840

Education beyond high school is an investment in your future.

More jobs than ever before require training or a two- or four-year college degree. Experts predict that by 2014, 90 percent of the fastest-growing careers will require some education after high school.

The most recent reports state that by 2020, 70 percent of all jobs in Minnesota will require two years of education after high school.

Besides a better emplyment opportunities, an investment in education can also provide you with more:

Job SecurityA college degree increases your chance of employment by almost 50 percent when compared to a high school diploma alone. Bottom line: the higher your education level, the greater your chances of finding and keeping a job.

BenefitsCollege graduates typically receive more and better benefits, such as health insurance and retirement plans, than jobs requiring only a high school diploma.

Growth PotentialSome people have jobs, something they simply do for money. Other people have careers, based on their interests, talents and often their education, which allows them to continue to grow and be challenged throughout their entire lives.

ConfidenceMost everyone doubts themselves at some time in their life, and most students will admit that they have doubted their ability to succeed in college. But once you begin and experience all the help and encouragement available, and then succeed at that first presentation, test or paper, your confidence will soar. The sky is the limit!

Page 29: Anoka-Ramsey Resource Guide - Spring 2010

Paying for CollegeThink college is too expensive for you? Don’t rule it out because of costs. The U.S. Department of Education awards more than $96 billion a year in grants, work-study assistance and low-interest loans, and the state of Minnesota has programs too. In fact, 65 percent* of Anoka-Ramsey Community College students receive some form of financial aid.

Financial Aid Basics

Why Financial aid is intended to fill the gap between the actual price of the school and what students and their families can realistically contribute.

What There are three types of financial aid available to most students: • grants and scholarships (financial aid you don’t repay) • loans (financial aid you must repay) • work study and community or military service (financial aid you earn) Most students receive a financial aid package put together by the school you plan to attend. It may include all three of these types of aid.

Who Whether your old or young, new to college or returning, have family to help or are on your own, to qualify for financial aid at Anoka-Ramsey you only need to be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national (or an eligible non-citizen) and, for a Minnesota college, a resident of Minnesota.

How Financial aid is often based on financial need. But to receive any grants, loans or work study assistance, you need to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To begin your application, visit www.fafsa.ed.gov/index.htm.

When In Minnesota you can file as soon as you have completed your tax return. Applications are accepted up to 30 days after the semester starts.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College ScholarshipsAlong with federal and state financial aid, Anoka-Ramsey’s campus foundations offer more than 160 scholarships. In 2009 - 2010 alone, Cambridge Campus students received more than $66,200 in foundation scholarships. Coon Rapids Campus students received more than $148,000 in foundation scholarships including two Presidential Star scholarships that pay for full tuition, fees and books.
