Why Education?A college education is an investment in yourself.Anoka-Ramsey Community College asked a range of students, many serving as Student Ambassadors for the college, why education is important.

Their answers are throughout the pages of this publication.

One fact however is that more jobs than ever require training, a two- or four-year college degree after high school.

Experts predict that by 2014, 90 percent of the fastest-growing careers will require some education after high school. The most recent reports predict by 2020, 70 percent of all jobs in Minnesota will require two years of education after high school.

“ As I apply what I learn in school in my life, I know I am living life to the fullest.”

Heather Jones, associate in arts degree, transfer student, Student Ambassador, environmentalist

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Current Population Survey

Education Pays

Beyond better employment, education may also provide more:BenefitsCollege graduates typically receive more and better benefits, such as health insurance and retirement plans, than jobs requiring only a high school diploma.

ConfidenceNearly everyone doubts themselves at some time in their life, and most students will admit that they have doubted their ability to succeed in college. But, once you begin and experience all the help and encouragement available, and then succeed at that first presentation, test or paper, your confidence will soar.

Personal GrowthSome people have jobs, something they simply do for money. Other people have careers, based on their interests, talents and often their education, which allows them to continue to grow and be challenged throughout their entire lives.

College Dollars & Sense Think college is too expensive for you? Don’t rule it out because of costs. The U.S. Department of Education awards more than $96 billion a year in grants, work-study assistance and low-interest loans, and the state of Minnesota has programs too. In fact, 73 percent* of Anoka-Ramsey Community College students receive some form of financial aid.

What There are three types of financial aid available to most students:• grants and scholarships (financial aid you don’t repay)• loans (financial aid you must repay)• work-study and community or military service (financial aid you earn) Most students receive a financial aid package put together by the

school you plan to attend. It may include all three types of aid.

Who Every student admitted to Anoka-Ramsey Community College who meets the basic eligibility criteria and completes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is eligible for some form of assistance.

Why Financial aid is intended to fill the gap between the actual price of the school and what students and their families can realistically contribute.

How Financial aid is often based on financial need. But to receive any grants, loans or work-study assistance, you need to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To begin your application, visit: fafsa.ed.gov.

When Apply as soon as possible.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College ScholarshipsAnoka-Ramsey’s campus foundations offer more than 80 scholarships. In 2010-2011, 120 Cambridge Campus students received more than $74,400 in foundation scholarships. Approximately 130 Coon Rapids Campus students received more than $130,000 in foundation scholarships including two Presidential Star scholarships that pay for full tuition, fees and books.
