Dear Friends of 171,"The arts reflect profoundly the most democratic credo, the belief in an individual vision or voice... The arts' belief in potential gives each of us -- both audience and creator -- pride in our society's ability to nurture individuals." - - Wendy Wasserstein, 1950-2006, American playwright, author and academic.In July 2010, I became the executive director of the regions’ most beloved community multi-arts center. I am humbled and honored to be a part of an organization that has as its core the responsibility to nurture and develop the arts in the lives of all who walk through the doors. Since returning to the area ten years ago, I have watched a resilient 171 Cedar Arts Center continue to fulfill its mission, formally bestowed in 1968.171 has a solid foundation – literally and figuratively. The physical structures that make up its campus have endured many changes, but essentially look the same as they did many, many, years ago when artists first began inhabiting the spaces within. The activities of 171 change shape over time to suit the needs of the community – a community that has demonstrated unwavering support.Those who have been touched by 171 return with their stories – more than occasion-ally – returning friends reach out to us offering their skills and sometimes their resources. Those who return and some who have never left, are evidence of 171’s responsive programming and dedicated instructors, but more so, a snapshot of the depth and breadth of the relationships that have been fostered over the past forty-three years.Last March 171 and six other community organizations received the news that they would be the recipients of an extraordinarily generous donation from an anonymous donor who had recently passed. The news was met with shock, joy, and a tinge of sadness that this person could never be properly thanked. We have all tried imaging the story behind the giving – a friend, a student, a teacher – now embodying all of these qualities. This past fall, 171’s board of directors set out to do its best to honor the spirit of the gift and work to invest and restrict the bequest so that it’s accessible and used to ensure the health of the physical plant and preserve the mission and vision of 171.Last November, a pianist and former student of Frances McLaren phoned to say hello, provide an update on his life and tell us the story about how his music teachers and 171’s scholarship program together impacted his life. In January 171 received a gift which will help carry out a much needed scholarship program for at least the next ten years. The gift was given to honor Frances McLaren – who has taught piano at 171 for thirty years – and the late Carole L. Bigler who was a well-respected Suzuki piano specialist as well as an organist for the First Congregational Church in Corning.On behalf of the board of directors, staff and faculty, I thank you all for your support, confidence in and enthusiasm for all that 171 has to offer. Letter from the President

Despite challenging economic times in the region during the last few years, we’ve continued to find ways to thrive. I’m pleased to report that our financial health is strong, and we are operating very near our capacity. We attribute this success primarily to the strength of our membership, but as well to the creative marketing, flexible programming, fiscal responsibility, and the care and commitment of our staff. The generosity of our donors is only added proof that we inspire connections with the arts community each and every day. A highlight of the past year has been our recruitment of Lynn Dates, our new Execu-tive Director. She brings a wealth of arts experience and a unique perspective that adds to 171’s tradition of leadership and collaboration in the arts community, and we are so lucky to have her lead the organization! I am also pleased to announce that we’ve invited six new board members to join us on our journey to provide the highest quality arts and music instruction in the region.
