We are very excited that the FDI Annual World Dental Congress is taking place in 2015 for the first time in Thailand. The country is in the process of becoming a major venue for debate on key issues such as oral health and population ageing, caries control and prevention and innovative practices such as minimal intervention dentistry.

The FDI AWDC raises the bar by bringing a new international perspective to regional and national debate on oral health, dental practice and health politics. It provides a huge opportunity to share knowledge and experience with dental colleagues from every continent, to challenge our own ideas and widen our perception. This international perception is even more essential in a world of migration of dentists and dental patients.

Thailand is also fast gaining an enviable reputation for the quality of its oral care, backed by its Universal Coverage programme, implemented in 2002, which gives them better access to health services, including dental services. Furthermore, rising awareness of dental and oral health and hygiene, a growing population and increasing per capita incomes will ensure a constant increase in demand for dental products and services.

The World Dental Exhibition has been an integral part of the FDI Annual World Dental Congress ever since 1929, when an Oral Health Exhibition first took place in association with the 23rd FDI Annual Session in Utrecht (Netherlands). Dental exhibitions play and essential role for dentists and other oral health practitioners: where else but at a dental exhibition can they find and examine the latest in technology and products to recommend to patients?

With its wide choice of hotels and other accommodation, a very hospitable local population, superb cuisine and entertainment and wealth of cultural opportunities, Bangkok is a prime destination for the discerning traveller. Built in 1997, the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Center (BITEC) is today a highly acclaimed exhibition venue, accessible from Bangkok itself by the renowned Skytrain.

After our 100th anniversary Hong Kong in 2012, this is the second time in three years that FDI, the international voice of dentistry, has demonstrated its confidence in the Asia Pacific region as an area of growth and development in the field of dentistry and the dental sector.

Together, FDI and the Dental Association of Thailand are planning a uniquely relevant and, we hope, enjoyable AWDC. We look forward to welcoming you the single most significant dental event in Asia-Pacific in 2015.

The recommended hotels are mostly along the skytrain (BTS) accommodation, it is really convenience for participants to travel by BTS in Bangkok. The Accommodation charge for 5 stars is around THB 6,500 - 8,000 (USD 200 - 250), 4 stars is around THB 5,500 - 7,000 (USD 170 - 220),and 3 stars is around THB 3,000 - 4,500 (USD 90 - 140). Head quarter hotel: InterContinental Hotel and Holiday Inn.

Bangkok is well-served by public transportation. Airport Link provides frequent services between the airport and the city is by. All major destinations in the city are served by Skytrain (BTS) and the subway system (MRT). As the traffic in Bangkok is very heavy especially during 7 am - 9 am and 3 pm - 7 pm., the modern transportation is a good option to travel during the peak hour. It will spend around 3 - 5 min. in each station. So, it takes only about 30 min. from InterContinental Hotel (Head Quarter) to BITEC. BITEC (Venue) is located near BTS Bang Na station. All FDI registrants will receive complimentary daily BTS card. You can collect it at the registration counter at BITEC.

BangkokBangkok became the capital of Thailand in 1782, when the royal court relocated from the city of Ayutthaya, which had been left in ruins following years of conflict with the Burmese. After settling temporarily on the western banks of the Chao Phraya River in Thonburi, the capital moved again, this time to the area of Rattanakosin in present-day Bangkok. Almost entirely surrounded by water, the new location was easier to defend against potential attacks. The final move marked the beginning of the Chakri Dynastry. Rama I named the new capital Krung Thep (City of Angels) in reference to the past glories of Ayutthaya, and he ordered the construction of two of the Kingdom’s most illustrious religious monuments, Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace, to consolidate the new capital’s ruling status.

Greater Bangkok now covers an area of 7,761.50 km² and is home to some 12 million residents. Ratanakosin remains the spiritual center of the city, graced by the dazzling splendor of the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew and nearby Wat Pho.

Modern downtown Bangkok stretches southeast of Ratanakosin and looks very much like many

other Southeast Asian capitals, with gleaming skyscrapers, deluxe apartment projects and lots of snarled traffic. The core of the new city encompasses the Sathorn and Silom districts and Sukhumvit Road, which includes upmarket shopping plazas and leafy public parks. These major downtown neighborhoods are connected by the BTS Skytrain and the MRT subway systems. These gradually expanding public transportation networks, with their bright, snaking trains carrying excited tourists and weary commuters alike, have not only helped relieve the city’s notorious traffic congestion and pollution, but given this City of Angels a modern, 21st century feel.

Thai rarely call their capital ‘Bangkok’ but instead refer to it as ‘Krung Thep’ (City of Angels), an abbreviated version of the full ceremonial and official name. This can be translated as ‘The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city (of Ayutthaya) of God Intra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn.’ It is no surprise that the Guinness Book of Records registered it as the world’s longest name for a capital.
