Welcome from the President - Dr. Douglas Auld Welcome to the 2012 ODA Annual Meeting in Oklahoma City!
This year has been an amazing year for me as ODA President. I want to thank all those who have put in so much effort to make this Annual Meeting such a great event. Dr. Justin Beasley, as Annual Meeting Chair, and Dr. Sid Nicholson, as CE Chair, have worked incredibly hard to make this Annual Meeting one of the most exciting and scientifically interesting events we’ve ever had.
We have spent this last year creating “A Legacy Through Collaboration”. Members across the state came together to help pay off the building mortgage - which was my main goal this year. Dental professionals and lay volunteers showed up by the hundreds to support our first rural Mission of Mercy. You have truly given of yourself, as we all worked together, to leave a legacy this year. I sincerely thank you.
We have such a great profession! During these next few days, take time to renew relationships as it is our collaborative efforts that strengthen us. Take time to go listen to the great line-up of speakers we have available during staggered times on Friday and Saturday. ODA LIVE! this year means “live” patients. Learn about bone grafts and mini-implants during these special sessions on Friday in the Exhibit Hall.
Please plan now to spend time in our Exhibit Hall. The Exhibit Hall will open earlier and stay open later. A concession stand offering breakfast and better lunch options will be open for you. On Friday evening, please plan to participate in the OUCOD/ODA New Dentist Reception being held in the Exhibit Hall. Immediately following the reception, bring the whole family to cheer on the OKC Redhawks for ODA Night at the Ballpark. I have enjoyed my year as President of the Oklahoma Dental Association and hope you will come celebrate with me at the President’s Dinner on Saturday evening. Like last year, we will honor our ODA Award Recipients. It will be an amazing evening of dinner and dancing to The Stars. I hope to see you there. Douglas Auld, DDSPresident, Oklahoma Dental Association

Welcome to the 2012 Oklahoma Dental Association Annual Meeting, “A Legacy through Collaboration.” This year’s meeting provides you and your staff a full slate of education and product exploration that is complemented by an exciting schedule of special events.
The Annual Meeting Planning Committee has been working diligently to assemble a vast array of well-known and versed speakers to stimulate and energize both you and your team members. The Exhibit Hall has been expanded and improved to showcase the latest in dental procedures and technology. Opportunities for camaraderie with colleagues consist of an OUCOD/ New Dentist Reception, ODA Night at the Bricktown Ballpark, and the annual President’s Dinner.
The ODA is proud to provide the entire dental profession with the opportunity to experience the most innovative technologies and learn from many of the most acclaimed health care professionals. Educational programs address an array of topics, including the latest in clinical dentistry and practice management, presented in a variety of formats: lecture, round-table presentations, hands-on workshops, and live patient procedures demonstrated in the “ODA LIVE!” courses.
Many thanks go to the hard working volunteer members of the Annual Meeting Planning Committee (listed on the right), and the ODA staff who dedicate their time and energy to creating a unique and rewarding experience for all of our attendees.
Thank you for joining us at the ODA’s Annual Meeting. We anticipate that you will have a wonderful and enriching experience in Oklahoma City, and we hope you will become an annual attendee like so many others.

What are these?
You may have already seen QR codes—those funny-looking, square barcodes—on direct mail pieces or in advertisements. As smart phones become more
prevalent, more businesses are using QR codes as part of their marketing and communications.
What are QR codes?QR (short for “quick response”) codes are 2D barcodes that can be scanned and read by smart phones. The ones in this program will direct you to a website where you will find the speaker’s handout.
How do you scan a QR code?Just pull out your smart phone and use any free app for scanning QR codes. In your app store, search “QR code reader”.
Once you scan or snap a picture of the code you will automatically be redirected to a web page.
We hope you enjoy this new technology at the 2012 Annual Meeting!

He encourages individuals to become self-motivated while challenging them to step up to the plate of personal responsibility. The result is an atmosphere of cooperation, creativity, and innovation that permeates an entire organization or family.

Dental is our only focus. As a result, we have the largest dentist networks, the most members and are the #1 dental benefits company in America (and have been since developing dental benefits in 1955). We’re also locally headquartered to better care for you and your patients. And perhaps most importantly, we’re a not-for-profit company uniquely positioned to put care first and place people before profits.
We provide free children’s oral health education in our schools, fund dental student scholarships at the OU College of Dentistry and support free/low-cost clinics across the state - providing vital care to those in need. In fact, we again sponsored the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OkMOM), the largest free dental event in Oklahoma history.
Why? Because we believe that where the need is great, the giving must be even greater.
But we know none of this is possible without you - our participating dentists and staff. Because of you and your willingness to give back to those less fortunate, we are succeeding in our mission to one day improve the oral health of every Oklahoman.
On behalf of all the employees of Delta Dental of Oklahoma and our Oral Health Foundation, we take this opportunity to say “thank you” for all you do every day to help our state smile brighter.
Together, we’re changing the face of Oklahoma’s oral health.

Complications & Concerns withDental Local AnesthesiaThree (3) Hours of CE AvailableFRIDAY2:30 PM - 5:30 PMLecture formatRecommended for dentists and hygienists
This course is designed to enhance the safe and effective use of maxillary and mandibular local anesthesia. The course will discuss block injections, inadequate anesthesia, supplemental innervation, and alternative routes such as Gow-Gates, Akinosi, intraosseous, and interligamentary routes. Evidence to support a concept of multiple inferior alveolar nerves will also be discussed.
Course Objectives: • Review the anatomy of the “traditional” routes
for administering local anesthetics in the maxilla/mandible
• Study the anatomy of alternative routes such as Gow-Gates, Akinosi, intraosseous, interligamentary, and supplemental
• Learn and better understand anatomical complications with local anesthetic injections in the head region
• Become skilled at avoiding and managing complications
A profound myth in the induction of dental local anesthesia involves the perceived benign nature of dental local anesthetic injections and solutions. This course will consider the anatomical basis of complications resulting in less than optimal local anesthesia, and complications such as nerve trauma, vascular injury, etc.
During this course, attendees will learn: • A good comprehension of the anatomical complications possible with local
anesthetic injections in the head region• How to avoid anatomical complications such as nerve injury, hemorrhage,
trismus, facial paralysis, etc.• How to manage complications subsequent to anesthetic injury both physical
and/or chemical

Brian Mealey, DDS, MSThe Oral - Systemic Connection in Daily Dental PracticeSix (6) Hours of CE AvailableSATURDAY9:30 AM - 12:30 PM & 2:00 PM - 5:00 PMLecture format Recommended for dentists and hygienists
From the New England Journal of Medicine to Ladies Home Journal, the last decade has seen an explosion of published information related to the interactions between oral and systemic health. Our patients are reading and hearing this information, and they want to know how it relates to their own health. When the patient says, “I read that my gum disease could be bad for my baby (or my diabetes, or my heart); is that true?”, we need to be able to answer the question based on the evidence. This lecture will review the links between oral health and commonly encountered systemic conditions such as osteoporosis, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and pregnancy. The purpose of the lecture is to translate knowledge gleaned from medical and dental research into the everyday world of dental practice.
Course Objectives: • Be familiar with the emerging concepts of periodontal diseases
as they relate to other inflammatory diseases• Comprehend the influences of systemic conditions such as
immune compromise, diabetes, and osteoporosis on periodontal health
• Know how inflammatory periodontal diseases may impact cardiovascular health, the clinical course of diabetes, and pregnancy outcomes
