SERVICES & PROGRAMS

ADVOCACY

The PGCOS Advocacy Committee is a very active group of individuals who

explore a variety of seniors’ issues and speak up on behalf of seniors. Examples of

issues they have tackled over the past year include surgery waitlists, dementia care

strategies, and medical lab appointment processes, as well as landlord & tenancy

concerns, parking availability, fire safety, and of course, affordable and accessible

housing for seniors. This busy committee expects to continue their efforts on behalf of

PG seniors over the coming year.

BETTER AT HOME PROGRAM

The Prince George Council of Seniors continues to partner with the PG Native

Friendship Centre by housing the Better At Home Program. This program offers

housekeeping based on a sliding scale fee, as well as grocery shopping assistance and

Friendly Visits (volunteer visitors). Grounds-keeping based on a sliding scale fee was

available for most of 2015; however, grounds-keeping has been discontinued in order to

accommodate a second part-time housekeeper. We anticipate another busy year

ahead for this crucial program.

CHRISTMAS HAMPERS

In December 2014, PGCOS delivered just over 180 Christmas hampers for low-

income and/or isolated seniors. That number increased to approximately 220 in

December 2015. This project is not possible without many volunteers and donors.

Contents of each hamper included the recipient’s choice of turkey or ham with

appropriate trimmings, as well as sufficient non-perishable foods for at least 7 days after

the holiday season. Thanks to donors, we were also able to include fresh potatoes and

carrots, mandarin oranges, and cheese with each hamper.

This past December, the Prince George Citizen provided us with warehouse

space – including a fabulous parking lot area and loading dock for delivery day.

We anticipate the need for these hampers will continue to rise. We will be on the

lookout for affordable (preferably free) warehouse space again to carry on this annual

project.

COMPUTER CLASSES FOR SENIORS

A decade ago, seniors came to us for instruction on hand-me-down PCs. Today,

seniors come to us with new laptops, tablets, and other electronic equipment. Our

computer lab PCs were no longer serviceable, and we did not have laptops or tablets.

Our Beginners’ curriculum was for Windows 7. Consequently, over this past year

PGCOS has referred seniors interested in beginners’ computer classes or other “techy”

assistance to the PG Public Library. At this point, we are not sure of the future of this

particular program.

DENTURE PROGRAM

PGCOS, in partnership with the PG Construction Association and a small

number of other local donors, has been able to provide financial assistance for seniors

needing dentures.

Between April 2014 and March 2015, PGCOS provided nearly $11,000 in

financial assistance to 20 individual seniors for the purchase of new dentures.

Individual assistance ranged from approximately $200 to $900.

The demand for this assistance continues to grow. PGCOS remains very

concerned that the Province of BC will cover the cost of teeth extractions, but considers

teeth replacement with dentures merely cosmetic, and therefore not covered under

Medical premiums. We anticipate another busy year ahead for this program.

ELDERBEARY

Our Mascot, Elderbeary, did not have a particularly busy year. Our principal

Mascot volunteer injured his own “paw”, and recovery has been slow. We need Mascot

volunteers – there are plenty of community events where Elderbeary could make

appearances!

FRIENDLY PHONE CALLS

In 2014, PGCOS took over Community Policing’s Friendly Phone Calls in

addition to our own Friendly Phone Calls program. Calls are now placed 5 days per

week from the Seniors Resource Centre by 5 different volunteers. Each volunteer calls

12 to 20 seniors. This social contact is crucial for isolated seniors, and we anticipate

another busy year ahead.

GOLDEN AGE SOCIALS

The Golden Age Social is a free tea and entertainment for seniors, hosted 5

times each winter by volunteer organizations. Host groups bake, purchase or donate

food, beverages, table centres, door prizes, and entertainment. Attendance at each

social is nearly 200 seniors.

This past winter, we lost two host groups – organizations with aging members

who felt they could not manage host group duties any longer. We will be looking for a

couple of new host groups for the year ahead.

PGCOS is grateful to the City of Prince George and the Civic Centre for their

support for this well-attended event.

INCOME TAX PREPARATION

The Seniors Resource Centre offers Income Tax preparation during March and

April each year with Community Volunteer Income Tax Preparers. In 2015, these 5

volunteers completed 362 Income Tax Returns, a 15% increase over the previous year.

This service is crucial as a number of benefits – Guaranteed Income

Supplement, Pharmacare, SAFER – depend on the timely filing of these returns. We

anticipate another busy tax season ahead.

INFORMATION & RESOURCES

Providing information and resources is the “backbone” of work at the Seniors

Information Centre. Staff and volunteers respond to over 4,000 telephone requests,

and approximately 3,000 drop-ins each year. The most prevalent request is for seniors

housing information.

We do our best to stock our office with relevant brochures and literature. In

addition, we endeavour to take relevant information out to the community via specific

workshops and presentations (such as Falls Prevention & Awareness), participation in

community events, and our annual Seniors Info Fair at the BCNE.

We anticipate demand for information specific to seniors will increase as our

population ages.

MEALS ON WHEELS

Our Meals on Wheels Program delivers approximately 5,000 meals annually.

Clients average around 30 individuals daily, and they access this service for a variety of

reasons including temporary mobility issues, recent hospital stays, nutritional concerns,

absence of caregivers, and dementia concerns.

Meals are prepared at the Smokehouse Kitchen at the PG Native Friendship

Centre, and consist of a hot entrée, soup or salad, and small dessert for $5.50. Meals

are delivered for noon by a dedicated group of volunteers.

PGCOS anticipates this program to continue much the same over the coming

year.

NEWSLETTER “The Senior Times”

PGCOS publishes an E-Newsletter monthly. At present, our newsletter reaches

over 1,000 individual email recipients. Interest has nearly doubled in the past year. We

anticipate continued interest over the coming year.

RADIO PROGRAM “Senior Moments”

“Senior Moments” continues to be a well-received weekly radio program on

CFIS-Fm 93.1 with cohosts Sharon Hurd and Bob D’Auray. Topics covered range from

seniors’ nutrition, Toastmasters, seniors and investing, effects of mining effluent in area

lakes, and activities of the PG Cougars.

Tune in Tuesdays between 1 and 2 pm. Archived episodes are available at

www.senior-moments.ca We guarantee you will enjoy it!

SENIORS INFO-FAIR @ BCNE

In August 2015, PGCOS hosted it’s 9th annual one-day Info Fair within the

Exhibition, our biggest and best ever with 51 exhibitors and approximately 1,900 seniors

attending.

Highlight of the day was sharing Birthday Cake with the City of Prince George!

SENIORS PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

This program continues to limp along, a few hours here and there. While we

know for certain there are seniors who need and will benefit from this worthwhile

program, we remain puzzled about how to actually connect them with our trained peer

support volunteers. We have 8 trained peer counsellors who have provided

approximately 50 hours of peer support over the past year.
