P R E S I D E N T ’ S R E P O R T

I provide this report to the members of Hockey SA with a lot of pride in our achievements for this last year.

First, congratulati ons to Wayne Harvey who, in September 2009, was elected as the new Chairperson and President.

Wayne is the fi rst country President of the Associati on and was made a Life Member in March 2009. His electi on by the Board was made possible by the provisions of the new consti tuti on adopted by members in March 2009. I had advised the Board in February that I wished to step down from the positi on of President.

Hockey is the fi rst major sport in SA to adopt a new consti tuti on using the guidelines provided by the Offi ce for Recreati on and Sport. They also provide draft consti tuti ons for you and draft Deeds of Agreement for us all to use.

Welcome to our new General Manager, Christi ne Robertson. Christi ne was appointed by the Board in September. She has a background in major events management, business management, branding and managing not for profi t organisati ons. She is keen to meet all of you and take our sport forward.

I also thank Chris White for the service he provided over three years as General Manager. Chris was the fi rst qualifi ed General Manager we have had and he quickly restored our fi nancial aff airs and business relati onships with you our members, government, Hockey Australia and other sporti ng organisati ons.

He also quickly implemented the sixty recommendati ons of the PKF Governance and Finance Report 2006.

Welcome the other new staff at Hockey SA.

We had several big events in the course of the year, not the least was the AHL event in Adelaide in March, the Malaysian game in July, the U15 Boys in September/October, the Golden Oldies in September and the Indoor U21’s and Opens in December.

Congratulati ons all players, coaches and umpires selected to serve at Australian and Internati onal levels.

The Board of Hockey SA was successful in having a major change in the Australian Hockey League format adopted. This has been resisted by the other states for many years. We achieved a big reducti on in our costs for the nati onal league. Keeping costs low for a small State is criti cal.

We are working very hard to get the best results for improved faciliti es at Disti ncti ve Homes Hockey Arena and a hockey presence in the proposed Super School at Gepps Cross. We met the Prime Minister at his Community Cabinet Meeti ng in August.

Jim Tolson Immediate Past President

I would like to thank Jim Tolson for his ti reless contributi on to Hockey SA as president over the last 3 years. He has been at the helm during a period of great change to the structure and management of our sport and I would personally like

to congratulate him for his pati ent and skilful leadership.

Hockey in this state is now positi oned to take advantage of some exciti ng developments in sport in this country including facility development and elite program refi nement. A strengthening partnership with educati on also promises to assist in growing the parti cipati on base. I’ve enjoyed working with Christi ne Robertson in the fi rst 5 months of her role as General Manager and am certain she is the person to lead our sport into the future.

I would like to congratulate the board members on their endeavours over the past year in making the hard decisions to place our sport in a positi on of stability and with a clear vision for the future.

In closing I’d like to thank the staff and membership of Hockey SA for their support over the past 12 months.

Wayne Harvey President

2009 has been a ti me of great challenges and exciti ng changes at Hockey SA at all levels.

I take this opportunity to acknowledge my predecessor, Chris White for his work with the board over the last three years to return Hockey SA to a positi on of fi nancial integrity. Net assets have again improved over the last 12 months and now stand at $456K. This placed Hockey SA in a positi on to be able to repay 50% of the outstanding member loans in January 2009 and in December 2009 the HSA board approved the repayment of the remaining porti on of the loans in January 2010.

In June 2009, Hockey SA adopted a new consti tuti on based on guidelines provided by the Offi ce of Recreati on and Sport. The new consti tuti on requires the board to elect the HSA President from within the board members and this resulted in a new President, Wayne Harvey (Port Lincoln), being elected in September. Wayne has been a source of knowledge and experience which has been invaluable to myself in my new role as General Manager. The President and Board of Directors are enthusiasti c and open to a broad range of ideas to improve our services and to develop hockey statewide and this has been a considerable advantage in developing new programs and services.

At the Hockey SA Awards night in September, the Minister for Recreati on and Sport, the Honourable Michael Wright announced funding of $780,000 for the resurfacing of the pitch at the Pines. Work is due for completi on by the end of April 2010 in ti me for the AHL Women’s fi nals.

Despite a very strong business case for multi ple pitches at The Pines, neither the state nor federal government have provided funding for this, leaving South Australia as the only state hockey centre in Australia that is not at internati onal standard. The board and management will conti nue to work on this objecti ve during the upcoming 2010 electi on campaigns to bring pressure on the elected party to provide funding for facility upgrades. With hockey in SA currently at maximum capacity it is imperati ve that new pitches are installed not only at the Pines but across SA as part of an overall long term plan that will service the needs of hockey into the year 2020.

In late 2009 Hockey SA extended it’s Deed of Management of the Pines Stadium with the Offi ce of Recreati on and Sport, giving Hockey SA the

responsibility to operate and maintain the faciliti es in a way that best suits the sport in SA. New ways to generate income are now being planned and a long needed revamp of the canteen and bar faciliti es being discussed. Income generated will then be used to maintain the venue at a standard that players have a right to expect.

As part of a revamp of our services and faciliti es, Hockey SA adopted a new logo in late October. It’s simplicity and sweeping style in the three state colours provides a clean fresh image to brand new programs and innovati ons.

There have been considerable staff changes in 2009. Following my appointment as General Manager in early October, an organisati onal restructure has seen a number of positi ons made vacant unti l the completi on of the pitch resurfacing in late April. The current team are professional, committ ed people who are dedicated to the improvement of our services and programs. I thank them for embracing my vision and style of leadership, and for making moving forward a much easier task than it may have been.

Hockey’s success in SA is largely due to the many volunteers that give up their ti me to be on committ ees, run canteens etc at both club and state level. A huge thank you to you all. Without you we simply wouldnt exist. Hockey SA conti nues to operate also due to the ongoing support of our sponsors and supporters and we thank them all for their generosity. We also acknowledge the ongoing support from the Offi ce of Recreati on and Sport for their funding through the STep 1 Grants program which provides funding for many of our core services.

When I was appointed to the positi on of General Manager in October 2009, the fi rst thing that impressed me was the overwhelming passion of those involved in hockey in South Australia. With passion, great things can be achieved. But when you have so many people with so much passion, the key is to harness that passion and work together as a team. A team all heading in the same directi on, aimed at raising the profi le and quality of hockey in South Australia. I wholeheartedly believe that if we work together, there is nothing we cannot achieve for hockey here in SA.

2009 saw the introducti on of the exciti ng new school junior development program of Hockey SA called “Let’s Hockey”. The program is designed to be a fun and fresh way of introducing school students to the great sport of Hockey.

“Let’s Hockey” is aimed at raising the profi le of Hockey across South Australia by exposing large numbers of primary school students to the sport resulti ng in increased numbers playing hockey.

The need for a state wide sustainable school based program was evident to produce a uniform image of our sport to schools. In previous years, clubs and associati ons were required to promote themselves to schools resulti ng in a mixed image of hockey and also exhausti ng the already overworked club volunteers.

By producing this uniformed schools program Hockey SA can guarantee schools a quality service.

“Let’s Hockey” targets schools state wide in club and associati on catchment areas aiming to deliver the program to at least 6 schools per club/associati on in the fi rst year. Schools can book 40 minute to 1 hour session for grade 3-7 students. To make the potenti al recruitment fair amongst clubs, Hockey SA has aligned each club a district and

“Let’s Hockey” sessions conducted in that district will promote the appropriate club.

The “Let’s Hockey” program was launched to the members on the 22nd of November with more than 30 representati ves from member clubs and associati ons att ending.

The support and excitement the program received was overwhelming and provided att endees a chance to network and discuss the program further.

As the program is conducted by Hockey SA, coaches are required to be trained and accredited as “Let’s Hockey” coaches. Nominati ons to become a “Let’s Hockey” coach were called for and once again the response was excellent with 25 applicants from all areas of the state and varying ages.

2010 looks to be a promising year for junior hockey

2009 was an exciti ng ti me to be involved in Game Development in South Australia as Hockey SA conti nued to implement changes and improve the programs already in place. Development conti nues to support the growth of Hockey across the state whilst off ering quality programs to all parti cipants.

Development Programs

This year the Holiday Clinics were expanded to allow us to reach a wider range of athletes. These clinics conti nue to be well received by both the metropolitan and regional associati ons represented by those in att endance. With further improvements the Holiday Clinics will become a real hallmark of the Hockey SA development program.

Targeted Area Clinics were conducted monthly between February and November. The clinics are conducted to allow those in att endance to learn the latest in technical developments on a range of skills with each month being a diff erent skill focus. The Targeted Area Clinics have proven very successful towards the end of 2009 and will conti nue to grow with new skills being focused on.

Hockey SA also visited numerous regional associati ons through out the year and provided skills clinics, coach and umpire informati on sessions as well as school visits. The highlight of these was the Clare visit where the development staff conducted 8 school visits in an area starved of sporti ng associati on visits.

The Hockey SA Kukri Academy was also implemented in 2009. The Academy was set up in order for the Game Development staff to gain more access to who we believe are the most talented kids across the state. It will also allow us to provide them with an opportunity to further develop their hockey and life skills in an environment of higher learning. I would like to thank Kukri, Just Hockey and Paradise Motors for the sponsorship they have provided.

State Zone Championships

In June, Hockey SA again hosted the State Zone Championships. The Zone championships conti nue to act as a way of improving the standard of hockey in South Australia. This was again evident from the standard of hockey and the number of players involved. From the six zones there was a variety of winners. The U13 Club Championships was also held with great success in terms of team numbers

Page 13: ANNUAL REPORT HOCKEY SA 2009 · Bayes Lloyd (Sadly passed away June 2009) PATRONS 1968 Mexico City Robert Haigh SILVER MEDAL 1972 Munich Robert Haigh 1976 Montreal Robert Haigh SILVER

and the standard of hockey witnessed by those fortunate enough to att end and conti nues to show the quality of players South Australia is developing.

This year the development staff implemented its new and improved selecti on process from these championships. The outcome of the new selecti on process were well received and allowed us to create quality state squads that would enable athletes to push each other to the next level through a tougher and more clarifi ed selecti on process.

Nati onal ChampionshipsSouth Australia again had a mixed year in 2009 with its results at the Nati onal Championships. Highlights included the U18 Men beati ng and drawing with WA and QLD respecti vely. The U21 Men climbing off the bott om of the ladder aft er last place fi nishes in 2007 & 2008. Both U15 teams fi nishing 5th, with the U15 girls showing that this group of players has a bright future ahead if they conti nue to work hard and further develop their skill and tacti cal knowledge.

The Southern Hotshots and Southern Suns also had a season of ups and downs. The Suns had some success defeati ng Victoria in a round game and then narrowly losing in the second match of the two game series. They went into the fi nals week with high expectati ons but unfortunately missed the fi nals. The group is sti ll young but has a great deal of talent and hopefully will be competi ng in fi nals hockey soon. As for the Hotshots, the highlight of their campaign was pushing eventual champions Western Australia in both games during a two game series in Adelaide. The Hotshots will conti nue to rebuild over the next couple of seasons, but with a greater depth of talent now coming through things looks good for the future.

2010 & BeyondWith the restructure of positi ons in the offi ce, I look forward to the challenge of improving the High Performance program to ensure the results conti nue to improve.

Planning has commenced to further develop our coaches and players to provide them with all the necessary tools to conti nue our push for future success. New and progressive ideas are being implemented to ensure quality competi ti ons are run and developed over the coming year.

Hockey SA will also look to expose a range of indigenous children to the sport of hockey throughout and beyond 2010 by way of regional visits and parti cipati on in the annual ATSI youth expo.

I wish to thank everyone that has been involved in the High Performance and Development programs in 2009. I look forward to another exciti ng year within the program.

2009 has been a successful year for the SASI Hockey program, with many excellent results for our scholarship holders across all ranges and levels of competi ti on. A diff erent approach was implemented this year, which included a more individual based athlete on pitch focus, and programs set to suit each individual’s specifi c needs.

Along with the many hours on the pitch, a lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes via SASI service providers, including Strength and Conditi oning, Psychology, Physiology, Performance Analysis, Medical and Program Management, so I would like to extend a huge thankyou to Leigh Smith, Matt McGregor, Greg Rowsell, Tim Rawlins, Peter Barnes, Tim Bass, Rohan Hatatuowa and Russell D’Costa, Todd Cece, Jo Parsonage and SASI scholarship coach Rachel Hampton. I would also like to extend a big thankyou to HSA and the development team for their support and hard work throughout the year.

Grant Schubert conti nues to fl y the fl ag for SASI within the men’s program and was an integral part of the Kookaburras Champions Trophy win in Melbourne, and was also awarded the player of the series at tournament end. He also played his 150th internati onal game in front of his home crowd in Adelaide during the test series against Malaysia. Cameron Joyce was elevated to the Nati onal Junior Squad aft er an excepti onal U18’s tournament along with Jonathan Peris who was a part of the Junior World Cup Squad. Scott Germein and Ed Chitt leborough were selected in the Nati onal Futures Group, whilst Ed and Al Oliver travelled to Beijing as part of the Australian Schoolboys team.

DeAnne Gilbert forced her way back into the Hockeyroos squad and represented Australia at the Spa Cup in South Africa. SASI athlete of the year Bianca Greenshields was selected in the Junior World Cup team the Jilaroos, and was also named Captain.

More recently Holly Evans and Elise Stacy have forced their way into the Hockeyroos squad with Elise securing an AIS scholarship and will be

heading to Perth in the new year, whilst Holly will play her fi rst senior internati onal for Australia against New Zealand, which is a true testament to her courage, hard work and dedicati on throughout the year.

One of the real highlights of the year was our SASI Hockey Leadership Challenge. The theme for the challenge was The Amazing Race. A race around Adelaide, which saw all of our athletes partnered up and set many challenges throughout the day all across the city including Henley Beach, North Adelaide, Glenelg and the City Central. Many athletes performed tasks which were well outside their comfort zones and much fun was had by all, even in the searing heat!

Another new initi ati ve for the year was our SASI Elite Goalkeeping Academy, which included 10 Keepers from across the state. Sessions were held at SASI, the SASI Aerial Centre, DHHA and Semaphore Beach. The Athletes worked extremely hard on hand eye sharpening and footwork drills as well as gymnasti cs and aerial awareness sessions. This has proven to be a terrifi c success and will certainly be conti nued well into the future.

All in all we have a terrifi c platf orm for success into the future, and I look forward to working with the next generati on of future Kookaburras and Hockeyroos in 2010.

2009 was a consolidati on year for the Hockey Metro competi ti on.

Once again a very successful season that recognised improvements and increased capacity of the competi ti on’s administrati on processes and procedures. This was due parti cularly with the direct involvement of a dedicated resource i.e. Margie McIlwraith.

It would be remiss not to suggest that the reliance upon volunteers was yet another important factor for generati ng a very successful 2009.

Importantly the HME Rules Sub-committ ee provided important value to the effi ciency of how the competi ti on operated throughout the 2009 season. Although there is always room for conti nuous improvement within the rules of the competi ti on, it would appear that 2009 resulted in less operati onal disputes between the members and indeed communicati ons and deliberati ons on various issues/challenges were quickly dealt with, primarily due to the dedicati on and commitment of the Hockey Metro Executi ve and associated sub-committ ees.

Although the proposed cost centre for the Hockey Metro competi ti on never eventuated, there was a shift ing in the positi on and desired directi on of Hockey SA to mover closer to such an initi ati ve. The noti on of the Premier League being accepted into a ‘State-wide’ concept was also deliberated by the Board of Hockey SA and although this too did not go any further in 2009, it sti ll has not been lost and conti nues to be on the agenda.

HME has now further strengthened its ‘positi oning’ within the SA Hockey community and to this end has produced some outstanding results both within the operati onal levels and also the actual ‘playing arena’, where there has been a perceived improvement with playing standards and incremental increases in crowd parti cipati on.

A big thank you to the out-going 2009 Hockey Metro Executi ve for their ti reless dedicati on, commitment and endeavour during the year. They have been a wonderful committ ee with a fi rm resolve.

No doubt the enti re Hockey Metro membership extends their appreciati on for the excellent eff ort

the Hockey Metro Executi ve and its sub-committ ees demonstrated throughout the year – well done!

Special appreciati on needs to go to Margie McIlwraith and Maxine Murden for their magnifi cent support, follow up on all operati onal matt ers and maintenance of the program throughout 2009. Also many thanks to Paul Beckman for his support, perseverance, persistency and loyalty.

Mel Thompson has been an excellent contributor on the HME and she will be sadly missed – a warm thank you Mel.

U M P I R E ’ S R E P O R T

The Umpires’ Committ ee of South Australia had yet another busy year in 2009. The advent of the ‘Play your own ball’ free hit and ‘free hit out-side the circle’ rule changes, required a quick response from the umpiring panel. Many Clubs requested an explanati on of the rule changes to clarify the interpretati ons and representati ves were sent to club venues to explain these changes. The rules were implemented in both Metro and Country Associati ons at the start of the winter season and most Associati ons were able to implement the changes smoothly.

Assessment of the panel and support of new umpires will conti nue to be a priority of the Committ ee this year. Also, with the support of the Board, we will endeavour to assist Country Associati ons to improve their umpire skill levels as well.

Our core of dedicated umpires conti nued to cover the Division 1 and most Division 2 matches this year. There was an increase in the number of umpires on the panel this year although we sti ll need to recruit approximately 5 more onto the panel for the load to be shared equitably. We were able to send umpires to cover Country Grand Finals as requested by Country Associati ons. Many Country Associati on fi nals were staggered to enable umpires to go to the country for their fi nal series, which helped the panel share the load. We also have been able to promote several umpires to Premier League this year and have started to allocate some of our talented juniors into the senior matches. We have been able to att ract more junior umpires to umpire the junior games and we will conti nue to work on their development. The Committ ee thanks Sam Fitzgerald and John Berry for their work in allocati ng Junior appointments.

Our top level umpires performed excepti onally well in all of the Australian Championships that they att ended. Tim Pullman umpired the fi nal of the European Cup and maintains his ranking of 2nd in Australia! Levi Stevens has been promoted to umpire at the NHL and also umpired the Australia v Malaysia Internati onal games played in Adelaide with Tim. Dan Hasseloff has conti nued as an umpire at NHL level. Mark Pilkington umpired at the Under 21 Men’s Championships. Sam Fitzgerald, Matt hew Claxton and Ben Sutherland represented South Australia at the Under 15 Championships in Adelaide. Matt hew umpired the Grand Final before travelling to Holland to play in their Winter

season. Rhiannon Murrie was selected to umpire in the Under 15 championships in Brisbane. Meagan McPhee was appointed to the Women’s Vets panel and umpired in the fi nals series in the Over 35’s. Johnathon Watson and Ella Bourne represented the State in an Invitati onal Under 13 Tournament for Boys and Girls held in Coff s Harbour, NSW. Mark Pilkington and Sam Fitzgerald have also been selected to umpire at the Under 18 Indoor Championships as well.

The challenge for us as a Hockey community is to conti nue to identi fy, encourage, support and develop quality umpires in this State. We recognized the contributi on to Hockey umpiring in South Australia by Levi Stephen and Arnie Hissey, Men’s and Women’s umpires respecti vely, Bruce Murrie for Services to umpiring and Rhiannon Murrie as the ‘Umpire with potenti al’ at the Hockey SA Awards Presentati on night. Rhiannon Murrie was also recognized as the umpire’s scholarship recipient at the Past Players’ Dinner. Gary Belder was also recognized earlier in the year and awarded life membership of Hockey SA for services to umpiring and we thank him for his conti nued valuable input into umpiring development.

On the Technical side, Rosie Stern was appointed Tournament Director at the Junior World Cup in Boston and we congratulate her on her appointment to such a level in World Hockey. Barry Holdsworth was appointed as tournament Director at the Under 15 championships here in Adelaide and had a band of local qualifi ed helpers acti ng as Judges during the tournament.

I would like to thank the outgoing CEO of Hockey SA, Chris White, for his support and encouragement of hockey umpiring in this state. I would also like to thank the Umpires’ Committ ee for their hard work throughout the season.

Bruce MurrieChairperson of the Umpires’ Committ ee.

In what was a big year for indoor hockey in South Australia, Adelaide hosted the Open and Under 21 Indoor Hockey Nati onal Championships for both Men and Women. It was a fantasti c tournament and is sure to be remembered for some ti me by those who att ended. I would like to thank the tournament organising committ ee, the many volunteers who off ered their spare ti me and Hockey SA for their support.

The SA Open Women’s team were unlucky to miss out on a spot in the fi nal aft er losing their semi-fi nal in extra ti me to eventual winners Western Australia. Unfortunately our Open Men’s, U21 Men’s & U21 Women’s teams didn’t fair quite as well, with all three teams failing to reach the fi nals.

At the conclusion of the championships Dave Francis and Daniel Cox were selected in the Australian Men’s Indoor Hockey Squad for 2009/2010, with Holly Evans and Anastacia Tomeo earning selecti on in the Australian Women’s Indoor Hockey Squad for 2009/2010.

Prior to commencement of this year’s indoor hockey season, John Hooper visited from Victoria to help run some excellent clinics for both players and coaches, to help improve the skills and knowledge of those involved in indoor hockey within South Australia. It is hoped that more clinics will be held in the coming year.

This year saw the recommencement of the Hockey SA Indoor Hockey Competi ti on in Adelaide, aft er a one year absence. This year’s competi ti on comprised of Men, Women, U17 Mixed, U15 Mixed and U13 Mixed comps. Plans are already being put into place to further expand the competi ti on in 2010/2011 in order to take advantage of the potenti al indoor hockey has for growth here in South Australia.

Finally I would like to thank the current committ ee for all their work and support throughout the year.

2009 began with the Twilight Series being played at the DHHA ground and it was very pleasing to have 10 teams entered. Once again thanks go to Margie McIlwraith for organizing the programme.

This programme has been instrumental in getti ng many women back into hockey and as it is an informal format with no scores kept, and fees as low as possible, the players have a good ti me out there.

There was no subsidy of any kind for this programme from Hockey SA this year.

A trip for veteran women state players was organized to go to Port Lincoln. Thanks go to Janet O’Shea for her help in organizing the trip and liaising with Port Lincoln for the games. This venture was subsidized by both Hockey SA ($1000) and the Vets Club ($1000) to promote Veteran Women’s Hockey in the Port Lincoln area, and try to att ract players to trial for the veteran state teams later in the year. The trip was enjoyed by all players and indeed Port Lincoln showed good talent on fi eld and great hospitality off it. Our trip must have been encouraging as Port Lincoln entered a team in the State Carnival Day.

To follow up in June the State Veteran Women’s Carnival Day was held at Woodville Hockey Club grounds. Main organizer was Sue Lee and she was busy with 14 teams entered, 8 from country, 6 from city. It was also the 25th anniversary of this event and two large sponge cakes were provided to celebrate the event. Caroline Wood gave an overview speech of the Day’s history and the crowd appreciated the presence of “originals” Trix Carrigan, Coral Sarjeant, Bev Jacobs and Caroline Wood.

The winners of the day were Riverland with Port Lincoln runners-up.

All three committ ee members conti nued working on the Organizing Committ ee of the Air New Zealand 14th Golden Oldies Hockey Festi val held from Sep 20 -27th in Adelaide on the Pulteney Grammar playing fi elds.

As a result of this work Hockey SA received $10,000 from Air New Zealand for the development of Veteran Women’s Hockey.

State Trials were held for the Veteran Women and we were able to send 5 teams away to Hobart in October in 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+ and 55+ ages.

This is in part due to the increased parti cipati on from country players trialing aft er our veteran promoti onal visits. So our state teams are indeed more representati ve of the state. Thanks again to Judy Inkster for her help in organizing uniforms.

Whilst we did not get into the fi nals this year we did have some Australian representati ves selected to play in either the Trans Tasman Cup against New Zealand in Newcastle in May, or the Masters Internati onal Tournament in July in England. Congratulati ons to Maxine Murden, Margie McIlwraith, Janet O’Shea and Jenny Kiel.

Former state veteran player Bev Jacobs, from Port Pirie, was an Australian Selector at the Championships.

The nati onal meeti ng of Veteran Women was held in Hobart, delegate Judy Schmarr att ending, and it was determined that a website for nati onal Veteran Women will be organized for 2010. Caroline Wood is the Veteran Women’s Coordinator on the Nati onal Committ ee.

Many Veterans volunteered for Technical Bench duti es at the Nati onal Indoor Hockey Championships and their help was appreciated.

To round off the year the Twilight series began again but with a new component – the Heat Policy came into eff ect and caused some mayhem when 2 out of 6 scheduled games were canceled due to heat in December!

It is hoped that in 2010 the Veteran Women will be able to have a winter season competi ti on.

In 2009, The Australian Veteran Men’s Championships were held in Melbourne at Footscray grounds, with overfl ow games at Altona. South Australia had 4 teams competi ng in Over 40, 45, 50 and 60 age groups. It was pleasing to see that all teams were very competi ti ve.

The SA conti ngent dinner was a very entertaining Greek themed aff air, held at the Aegean Greek Restaurant in Brunswick Street, with many of the people in att endance really getti ng into the evening’s theme. Costumes varied from ancient Greek soldiers, through the Greek Soccer team to somewhat dark and swarthy “ladies of the night”. Mixed in with these were some very original costumes sourced from the nearby Queen Victoria Markets. Yet again, a great night was had by all, and Brian Ivkovic needs to be congratulated for his eff orts in organizing the festi viti es.

The Managers, coaches and others who assisted in getti ng all teams on and off the pitch each game are sincerely appreciated. All teams had the services of a sports trainer to assist with treatment of injuries and massage before, during and aft er each game, and their services were greatly appreciated.

Team results:

Over 40’s - This team played excepti onally well, but unfortunately the results were not refl ected on the scoreboard. In their fi rst game against Queensland, they should have been leading 2-0 but missed an open goal and then hit the post. In the end, they lost 2-1. All of their games were similar and the appreciati ve comments from other states spectators indicated that the team earned a lot of respect. Overall the team played 6, won 0, lost 5, drew 1, fi nal positi on 7th.

Over 45’s - This team had 8 fi rst year players but acquitt ed themselves very well. Overall the team played 6, won 2, lost 4, drew 0, fi nal positi on 5th. All games were closely fought and it is hoped that the new players will be encouraged to conti nue on to future championships.

Over 50’s - The Over 50’s have been playing together as a regular team for some years now and this showed in their strong performance. An excellent campaign to fi nish 4th overall. The traditi onal power states WA and Queensland did not make the fi nal. SA demonstrated a tough and ti ght defence with possession and short passing

to the midfi eld and strikers. Unfortunately, by the fi nals many of the players were carrying injuries and came up against a very strong Victorian team in their semi-fi nal, losing 4-0. Overall in the round robin secti on, the team played 6, won 2, lost 2, drew 2, fi nal positi on 4th.

Over 60’s - Following a relati vely poor performance in 2008, the 60’s excelled. In their fi rst game against ulti mate championship winners, Queensland, they led 1-0 unti l near the end when Queensland scored on a penalty corner for a 1-1 draw. In their second game they led Victoria 2-0, but Vic scored 2 late goals for a fi nal score of 2-2. Four draws in ti ght games prevented the team from progressing to the fi nals. Overall the team played 7, won 1, lost 2, drew 4, fi nal positi on 6th.

Adelaide Hills Hockey Club

The Adelaide Hills Hockey Club conti nues to grow and in this season fi elded two new senior teams: men and women division

5. The club’s total of nine teams consists of three junior, two women and four men, including the Vets. Our mens division 3 team did extremely well in their fi rst season in that grade making it into the Grand Final and only narrowly conceding to Grange, 4-5. For a small club we have been successful in having a senior team reach the grand fi nal for a number of consecuti ve years. The Adelaide Hills Hockey Club aims to provide a family atmosphere and encourages anyone to give our game a go. This is helping the club to grow and we hope that in the near future we will att ract enough juniors to enable us to off er a girls team for competi ti on. The committ ee conti nues to liaise with the local council in our aim to improve the pitch facility at Litt lehampton.

Adelaide Hockey Club

2009 was a good year for Adelaide Hockey Club, on and off the fi eld. We conti nue to have fantasti c

numbers of juniors and this is due at least in part to our fabulous Minkey competi ti on. Held in the Parklands on Friday aft ernoons it is something we are very proud to run. Thanks to Trudie Cain who steps down as Minkey coordinator aft er 6 marvellous years in the role. We introduced Thursday night dinners at the Club in 2009 and they proved to be a great success. Our Club Days conti nue to draw crowds and the unveiling of the Club BBQ Trailer at the season’s fi rst Club Day was a highlight. The BBQ Trailer was built by a number of the Metro 4 boys, and it has quickly become the Club’s social hub. Junior presentati on night was once again a huge event at Adelaide, with in excess of 300 people celebrati ng the 2009 junior season. It’s a great family atmosphere with kids racing around on the “nursery” with hockey sti cks and balls while their parents enjoy a glass of red – it serves as a real reminder of what’s great about being part of a hockey club.

Susan TreglownPresident

Adelaide University Hockey Club

2009 was a successful year for the Adelaide University Hockey Club with 8 out of our 14 teams playing

fi nals and our Metro 3 Women taking out the premiership. Ross Fitzgerald won the Premier League Mens Player of the Year for the second ti me. 2009 saw the introducti on of two new Premier League coaches in Roger McDonald for the Men and Barry Cibich for the Women. The Club would like to thank them for their commitment throughout the season. Adelaide Uni conti nues to develop as a club with our major focus for the near future being upgrading the West Beach pitch and faciliti es, reintroducing juniors and planning for our centenary year in 2012. The committ ee would like to thank all those people who contributed to the clubs successes in 2009 and we look forward to conti nuing the growth and development of the club in 2010.

Tim CollinPresident

Barossa Valley Hockey Associati on

BVHA had a very successful year both on and off the fi eld. Our Zone team won the Mens and both Under

17 Girls and Boys competi ti on to make us the most successful zone. Locally what commenced as a year with the potenti al for numbers to be dropping ended with very good numbers. Through the foresight of the parti cipati ng clubs we were able to maintain a B grade womens’ competi ti on (nine aside) thus encouraging a number of girls and women to either commence hockey or conti nue when it had looked like this would not occur. Each of the grand fi nals were evenly matched with a number going to Golden Goal extra ti me. We as an associati on welcomed back one of our former Junior umpires in Levi Stephen for the grand fi nals. He along with long serving life member George Small gave the fi nals the experience necessary. We thank them both for their contributi on in making the day a success. Special menti on to Guy Draper and Sue Stephen who ensured every thing at the Associati on ran well and to script.

Berri Hockey Club

Berri Hockey Club had another successful year in the Riverland Associati on. We have att racted 120 players to our club to parti cipate in the great sport of Hockey. Our major highlight for the year was when one of our junior players Karri McMahon became the co captain of the Australian School Girls team who travelled to Singapore, England and Wales to play against regional and nati onal sides. This team was undefeated during its tour. We have also had 5 other players represent the state in various teams. We are proud that our club and associati on can produce players of the highest caliber. We have strengthened our junior ranks with the running of the minkey program for the Riverland which saw 20 young Berri players commence their associati on with Hockey. This junior development will remain our focus over the coming years. Our club is in a strong fi nancial positi on which will allow us to be proacti ve in the future.

Gavin McMahonPresident

Blackwood Hockey Club

Blackwood Hockey Club had a mixed season in 2009. The MW4 team failed to make the fi nals aft er recording a Premiership in 2008. The

Metro Grass team’s fortunes were mixed - beati ng the top team one week and losing to the bott om team the next before ulti mately failing to qualify for the fi nals by goal diff erence.

Sue DalitzSecretary

Burnside Hockey Club

Burnside Hockey Club commenced the 2009 season with much anti cipati on following the re-appointments of senior coaches Tim Pullman (men)

and Bob Claxton (women). The club had again nominated 9 senior teams and was eager to improve on the two premierships from 2008. Whilst success was again restricted to just one fl ag from the Metro 5 men the club was competi ti ve in other grades but overall it was a disappointi ng year on the fi eld with our Premier League men and women both missing fi nals acti on despite a late charge at the end of the season. Highlights from the season

included a Premiership from the Metro 5 men aft er being promoted from Metro 6, the Veterans B side almost repeati ng their premiership win from 2009 and an outstanding club representati on in state senior and underage sides

Whilst small in numbers our stature helps give our all and we functi on well because of this. We are encouraging our juniors to parti cipate in carnivals, something that has lapsed over the years. It was pleasing to see our talented juniors trial for the Mid North Zone teams with many gaining places. A team of U13 boys competed in the Junior Championships at Grange. We also fi elded a Men’s and Women’s team at the Kadina Carnival. Some members were very fortunate to play for the Country State Teams and Veteran’s teams - a great eff ort and commitment from those individuals. Our Development Umpiring program encouraged all players to ‘give umpiring a go’. We may be a small Associati on, but it is encouraging to see the spread of talented people within Associati on.

A week before season 2009 our club suff ered a ceiling collapse and due to the ceiling being asbestos and the costs

to remove, the councils red tape saw us without our clubrooms for the enti re season and we also lost a great deal of assets due to asbestos dust. This aff ected our ability to generate normal income for the club and this subsequently showed in our disappointi ng fi nancial result for 2009. A downturn of over $2000-$3000. The club rooms were not restored unti l October 2009. Our newly promoted Metro 1 Mens team did excepti onally well fi nishing 4th and in the fi nals, and the ladies metro four fi nished 4th and in fi nals.

Flinders University Hockey Club (“FUHC”)

The 2009 hockey season was a great season for the club.

FUHC membership base has grown over the last season. The club has faced and come through the challenges from the last couple of years aft er the introducti on of Voluntary Student Union fees in 2006 which placed a signifi cant “dent” in the clubs fi nances and signifi cant doubt on the clubs future. However, these challenges have been overcome, through the hard work and fundraising of our dedicated committ ee members. Although one of the smaller clubs in the winter competi ti on, the 2009 season saw the Metro 5 team once again make fi nals for the third year in a row. Congratulati ons to the members of this team. The 2009 season also saw a signifi cant improvement in the placing of our Metro 3 Men’s and Women’s teams. The 2009 season also saw an increase in numbers for the Men’s Veteran

Briston Talbot President

Forestville Hockey Club

The 2009 season was an important year for the development of Forestville Hockey Club The club entered 8

teams in the junior competi ti on and twelve teams in the senior competi ti on with numerous teams playing in fi nals. The Premier League and Metro 1 men’s’ teams conti nued to grow in both strength and depth. The Premier League team fi nished 6th aft er enjoying strong competi ti on during the minor round. Younger squad members relished the opportunity to play at Premier League level and learn from the more experienced players. Forestville women parti cipated in the Premier League competi ti on for only their second year. The season was interrupted by the loss of players to both injury and travel, however, it was promising to see players from lower grades make the most of the opportunity to play at Premier League level. The Metro 2 women’s team achieved their primary goal in securing promoti on to Metro 1 in 2010 aft er fi nishing 2nd in the minor round. This is seen as an integral step for development of the women’s squad and making Forestville Hockey Club an att racti ve environment for the development of juniors.

Helen WaldiePresident

Grange Royals Hockey Club

2009 for Grange Royals was one of development, but also some success in winning three premierships. We

entered 8 junior and 9 senior teams, with Metro 3 men, Metro 5 women and Vets becoming premiers. The remaining teams had varying success, and we had quite a number of our very young junior players vying to play in our Metro 5 men’s team where they gained valuable experience playing in a senior team with mature experienced players around them. We also had 19 players who enjoyed the challenge of being chosen to represent State teams. Our weekly Saturday night dinners at the club conti nue to be a very popular meeti ng place for our players and friends, and certainly keeps the kitchen volunteers very busy as the number of meals being served conti nues to increase. Many late nights are had in a great social atmosphere.

Kym Pena President

Lower South East Hockey Association

The 2009 season commenced under new executi ve

leadership. Tony Brown, Alison Regan, Gary Hocking, Anne Fowler and Di Ind accepted executi ve roles within the Associati on. Long serving Executi ve members Matt hew Kain, John Marti n- Brown, Terry Manser, Haydn Dow and Sharon Lewis stood down aft er many years of volunteer service to our Associati on. We are very fortunate to have had their wealth of experience and leadership for so many years. On behalf of the whole Associati on we sincerely thank them. A new era began, we had a record number of teams nominate for the season. In excess of 800 registered players across nine clubs. Sixty teams played hockey across the region in Mount Gambier, Penola, Naracoorte & Portland. West and Portland combined their U15 girls and Div 1 men to maximise opportuniti es and to strengthen their clubs. Our Associati on experienced a very successful Minkey program in 2009. Nine local primary schools parti cipated in our 8 week program. Numerous young players registered their interest to conti nue to play.

North East Hockey Club

The North East Hockey Club has had an extremely successful year. We have had signifi cant growth in both senior and junior

membership. Aft er increasing our juniors by three additi onal teams this year we expect even more growth with up to 20 juniors currently involved in our Minkey Program. Our canteen has been getti ng rave reviews from visiti ng players for its great range of food. This year we had the largest canteen profi t and thanks must go to all the volunteers. We had 15 junior players in state representati ve teams this year which was a 50% improvement on last year. This improvement showed the success of our Junior Development program. This year was the club’s most successful year on the fi eld in our 15 year history. We had 10 teams in fi nals with 6 making it through to grand fi nals. We were successful in winning 4 premierships in M1 men, M2 men, M2 women and U13 men. I would like to thank all the coaches and especially the players who contributed to coaching and development of the juniors.

Jim Hughes President

With the additi on of a third team to the club this season, Seymour had a challenging, solid and consistent year. Metro 1 was promoted from Metro 2 and faced tougher competi ti on. With the encouraging and moti vati ng guidance from coach Rob Porter and captain Jodie Camilleri, the girls did extremely well to make the fi nals. As the new team to the club and ably coached by Ryan Florence-Rieniets, players from Metro 3 had a challenging and strong year. Becoming familiar with the standard of the competi ti on and creati ng strong foundati ons for what will develop into a competi ti ve and skilled team. Metro 5 had another consistently solid year. Making the fi nals for the 3rd year in a row, they played well and were constantly challenged. Coached by both Chris Cole and Andy Leat the team had a lot of fun Special thanks must also go to Robyn LeCornu who umpired both Metro 3 and 5 every week

2009 marked the 75th year since the Clubs inaugurati on and we

celebrated that milestone in June with the Black and White Ball at the Lakes Resort Hotel. This year was also remarkable for the fact that the whole Club changed uniforms and for the fi rst ti me both men and women wore the same design. The Club entered 25 teams in the Metro competi ti on and once again entered a team in every competi ti on in every grade (except metro Grass). Pre-season for the Premier League and Metro 1 players saw 2 new innovati ons. The Club employed a qualifi ed trainer for the physical fi tness and also enlisted the services of David Arnfi eld to conduct elements of the Port Power player development program. Off the fi eld the Club has conti nued to develop and grow its membership base. The water base turf is now in its seventh season and playing extremely well. The surrounding infrastructure is beginning to show its age and repairs and upgrades conti nue to be a drain on resources.

The future for Port Lincoln Hockey Associati on looks bright. We have encouraged the establishment of the ‘Junior Think Tank’ through the Regional Centre of Excellence to rebuild the junior committ ee structure to advise the Board and take some leadership in coordinati ng and reporti ng on junior issues. We look forward to the fi rst draft of new bylaws and then a consti tuti on which will be a positi ve step to support clubs and players parti cipati ng in the sport, and refl ect the game as it is played now, with room for growth into the future.

Prince Alfred College Hockey Club

PACHC once again fi elded one team in the 2009 winter season at the Metro 3’s level. We managed to retain most of the players from the 2008 season, and were able to acquire some impressive recruits as well. The team had some good results during the year but failed to capitalise on opportuniti es up forward. This ulti mately cost the team a chance at fi nals as some ti ght losses and draws that could have been wins would have made all the diff erence. The season ended with 3 wins, 6 draws and 9 losses resulti ng in the team fi nishing 7th on the table. The goals were shared around amongst the players more than usual this season, but the team’s leading goal scorer was Hamish Eske with 4 goals. Thank you to Andrew Baillie for his support in the administrati on of the Club. and to Simon Burke, Hamish Eske, Richard Edwards, Patrick Sadlier and Joanna Caracoussis for their assistance with tasks and events during the year. Thank you to Sam Tyler (Burnside) and Mark Gobolos (Adelaide) who umpired for us for the bulk of the season.

Alex Chapman PACHC Chairman

Pulteney Old Scholars Hockey Club

The 2009 season saw Pulteney enter a Women’s team for the fi rst ti me. This doubled the size of our playing numbers overnight but ensured we had our most successful season (off the fi eld)

yet. Having both a Men’s and Women’s team has been a target of the club for many years and is something we are proud to now have. Player numbers were again tough to maintain due to our small player base but the club was able to maintain a team each week. Umpiring was again a taboo topic for our players and the club. Due to the small size we found it extremely hard to fi nd an umpire for each of our games each week. Cash incenti ves did work but caused the club’s budget to be pushed to the limit.

Scott Rouvray President

Seacliff Hockey Club Inc

It was pleasing to see so many teams competi ti ve and in fi nals, with 14 teams from Seacliff that fi nished in the top 4 at the end

of the minor rounds. Our club introduced new uniforms to the PL and M1 teams in 2009, and will be introduced to all grades in 2010. Seacliff was host to U15 Boys Zone Championships and thanks go to the many helpers who assisted in putti ng together a successful presentati on of our club to the wider hockey community. The club is very acti ve with coaching in several schools, and bringing this development together with a Lighti ng Carnival held at the club. Fantasti c results with approximately 200 students parti cipati ng on the day.

Adrian Roach President

2009 Was a exciti ng year for SPOC, despite being demoted from the Mens M1 to M2, they fi nished

strongly to be in the fi nals which lost to NE 2-1. Our M4 team fi nished 1 spot outside the fi nals in 5th place, only 1 point from 4th. The Mens M6 team had a lot of new placers that just enjoyed having a run around. 2009 also saw the new Womens M5 team to complement out M1 team. The womens M5 team fi nished 2nd, and looked promising. The Womens M1 team had a disappointi ng year fi nishing bott om, but only on goal diff erence.

Stonyfell Saints Hockey Club

For the past 2 years Stonyfell Saints have not fi elded a grass hockey team during the Winter Season. It became increasingly hard to fi nd interested players for weekend games. We have conti nued to fi eld an ever increasing group of interested players from all over the place, and of a wide age group, to play Summer Hockey. We are now under the Woodville Hockey umbrella, but sti ll call ourselves Stonyfell Saints. This has been very successful for us, as many of the players only come out for the summer season, and thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie of the team. We play hard together, vary considerably in skill level and fi tness, and age, but above all we have a lot of fun and many laughs. Although someti mes we are well and truly beaten, we are sti ll competi ti ve, and it enables those of us who play club competi ti on in winter, to maintain some skill base and fi tness. It has been easier organising a summer team than a winter team. We run on a shoe string budget with no profi t at all, so having the loaned money returned to us from HSA this year and last, and being under the Woodville banner, has helped a lot.

UniSA Lions Hockey Club

UniSA Lions Hockey Club had fi ve teams in the Adelaide Metro competi ti on in 2009. These were M2, M3 and M5 Women’s teams and M2 & M5 Men’s teams. The club had

a large proporti on of University students, some graduates and general public members. In total the club had around 75 players in 2009. The club had a strong focus on strengthening teams for the long term. This included a commitment to increase the

number of trained and qualifi ed umpires, work to strengthen and keep goal keepers within the club, increasing the overall membership base of the club, supporti ng and training coaches where needed and an overriding focus on fi tness and skills training for all members. The club successfully managed to keep fees low for students in parti cular due to committ ed and ongoing support by our sponsors and fund raising by the committ ee. The club will use the 2009 developments to build a bett er season in 2010 with hopes of some successful teams.

Westminster Hockey Club

2009 was a rebuilding year for Westminster Hockey Club. The club entered 2 teams and

focused on rebuilding player numbers in order to stay competi ti ve. Overall the two teams performed much bett er than the previous year thanks to the coaching eff orts of Tony Benson. Our club was fortunate enough to att ain the services of 3 competent umpires for the season. Umpires were paid $50 per game by the players, this was of great benefi t as being a small club it did not require players to umpire and miss out on game ti me and lessen strength of the squad. Our teams and club would not have been able to play at full strength if we had not been in this fortunate positi on. Westminster Hockey Club fi elded 2 men’s team in 2009, our Metro 3 team was coached by Tony Benson a long standing member and past president of the club. Our Metro 6 team was self coached but joined in at mid week training with our senior side. Whilst one of the smallest clubs in the competi ti on our club remains fi nancially viable by keeping our overheads low and fundraising and sponsorship enabled by a hard working committ ee

Chris Malec President

Woodville Hockey Club

Season 2009 saw many mixed results for the Woodville Hockey Club. Although on-fi eld success was once again low as a whole for the

club, 2009 did see many improvements. With no Men’s sides making it into the fi nals, due to many reasons, we have now improved and are ready to push ourselves to the next step. Unfortunately the Premier League Women’s team was unable to build on the success of 2008 and missed out on fi nals. Congratulati ons must be made to Noona Thompson and the Metro 2 Women and Gayle Dixon and Metro Grass Women for making fi nals but were unable to go all the way. Well done once again to the Vets A Men who also made fi nals. On the junior side of the Club saw us bring in our only premiership for the year, well done to the U15 Boys. Unfortunately we tried to enter a U13 girl’s team but despite gallant eff orts by many to recruit

players we were unable to have a steady team week in week out. Once again lots of hard work off the fi eld by many volunteers has seen the club grow and keep on heading in the right directi on for a viable future. With the ground work being made off the fi eld it is now only a matt er of ti me for this to translate onto on-fi eld success for the Woodville Hockey Club.

Joshua Kennewell Secretary

Yorke Peninsula Hockey Associati on

Another season has passed. We have seen most clubs struggle

to fi nd players at someti me during the winter. Many diff erent names and faces were out there playing, parti cularly in the men’s competi ti on. It was also the wett est season for a long ti me, which hopefully has helped the grounds around the peninsula to survive a bit longer. We started the season with an informati on day with Dale and Nick from HSA informing us on the new rules. It took most of the season for players and umpires alike to get used to the free hit - play on rule. In the end it seemed to work quite well so I expect to see the “trial run” become a new rule additi on for 2010.Congratulati ons to all the winners for 2009. It was great to see the younger players come to the fore as trophy winners. Well done to everyone involved with the fi nal’s series and to the winners for the season. We again saw local players selected at various levels of State representati on which is a good indicati on of the level of hockey we are playing on YP.

NOTES TO AND FORMING PART OF THE F INANCIAL STATEMENTS

1. SUMMARY OF ACCOUNTING POLICIES

The significant accounting policies employed in the preparation of these financial statements are:

(a) Basis of Preparation

In the opinion of the Directors, the Association is not a reporting entity. The financial statements have been drawn up as a special purpose financial report for distribution to its members.

The financial statements have been drawn up accordance with the Accounting Standards and disclosure requirements of the Australian accounting bodies.

Except where stated, the accounts have been prepared on the basis of historical costs and do not take into account changing money values on current valuations of non-current assets.

These accounting policies have been consistently applied by the Association, and except where there is a change in accounting policy, are consistent with those of the previous year.

The carrying value of all non-current assets is reviewed at least annually to determine whether they are in excess of their recoverable amount. If the carrying amount exceeds the recoverable amount, it is written down to the lower value.

(b) Inventories

Inventories are carried at the lower of cost and net realisable value.

(c) Property, Plant & Equipment

Items of property plant and equipment purchased by the Association are recorded at cost.

Items of property plant and equipment acquired by way of grant are recorded at the fair value of the grant at the date the entity gains control of the asset. The grant is recognised as revenue when received.

Items of property plant and equipment are depreciated over their estimated useful life using the straight-line method.
