“When first I looked into your eyes, each breath became a thousand sighs...”

Page 2: Haigh Hall Wedding Brochure

by Steven Mather

When first I looked into your eyeseach breath became a thousand sighs. My heart drummed out a thunder beat;I glowed with joy from head to feet. The hand of heaven touched my soul,as the bell of destiny began to toll. The tide of love began to rise, when first I looked into your eyes.

When first I looked into your eyesthe world was filled with summer skies. My sodden clouds of cold and greyglowed with gold, then wisped away.A brilliant rainbow arched across,as waves of love began to toss. The air was filled with lovebird cries, when first I looked into your eyes.

When first I looked into your eyesall time and space were paralysed. Each second became eternity;between us lay infinity. And in that instant, I was showna universe I had never known.I dwell there still, in paradise, when e're I look into your eyes.

On behalf of all the staff at Haigh Hall, may we wish you both every happiness in your future together. A wedding atHaigh Hall brings our rich past and your wonderful futureuniquely together.

There has been a Hall here since 1193 when Hugh le Norrey– Lord of Haigh took up residence. The Hall and its estateremained the home of the same family for the next 754 years, providing the seat of the Earls of Crawford and Balcarres.

The Hall and estate are filled with history and folk lore, including the tale of Lady Mabel, who around 1330 didpenance for an unfortunate mistake. Her punishment was to walk barefoot through the estate once each week to Wigan Town. Mab’s Cross now marks the spot where herwalk was completed.

The present Hall was completed in 1833 and was theresidence of Alexander William Crawford Lindsay – 25th Earl of Balcarres. Guests of Alexander included the Prince and Princess of Wales who stayed in 1873.

Haigh Hall was used as a military hospital in both the First and Second World Wars.

In 1947, Lord Crawford sold part of the estate to local tenantswith the remaining land and the Hall to the then WiganCorporation.

Today, Haigh Hall is a Grade II listed building set within 250acres of magnificent country park and is one of the mostpopular and well respected wedding venues in the region.
