  • Annual ReportESADE Foundation2007-2008

  • The 2007-2008 academic year was marked by the celebration of our 50th Anniversary.

On the one hand, we explored and updated the traits of our own identity, which stretches back to 1957-1958 when ESADE came into being. The 2007-2008 academic year was characterised by reflection on and advances in our commitment to quality education based on values that holistically encompass the various dimensions of the individual, our commitment to academic rigour and knowledge creation, as well as our commitment to dissemination and dialogue on socially relevant issues. In short, our commitment as an educational institution to promoting the construction of a more dignified and more just world in which to live.

On the other hand, it was an academic year that was clearly geared towards the future. This Annual Report shows that ESADE is in a unique position from which to build its future. The current reality and the impetus of a renewed identity give us fresh hopes in terms of what we should aspire to become and what we should provide to all those who are in one way or another connected with the ESADE project. Our task is to identify our strengths and the areas in which we have yet to make improvements if we are to build that future. This Report is a good basis for doing just that.

In such a special year as this, I would like to express our gratitude to all those who made the ESADE project possible: Jesuits, entrepreneurs, our foundation’s trustees, faculty and administrative staff, students and alumni, the legal and business worlds, and to so many others who have lent their support.

Our thanks go to each and every one of you for making possible these 50 years of excellence. And our commitment to the future: to be an institution that contributes academic and human value in an increasingly globalised world.

“The current reality and the impetus of a renewed identity give us fresh hopes in terms of what we should aspire to become and what we should provide to all those who are in one way or another connected with the ESADE project.”

    Carlos LosadaDirector General

This Annual Report is a brief summary of an academic year marked by the celebration of ESADE’s 50th Anniversary. It is difficult to accurately reflect the huge volume of activity of such an intensely active and vibrant institution as our own. Nonetheless, drawing on examples of the best of this activity, we hope that the following ten chapters will provide an idea of the achievements, work and initiatives of an extraordinary group of professionals working on an even more extraordinary project.

After 50 years of history, ESADE is still an extraordinary project. Looking back, we have a chance to rediscover and appreciate ESADE’s founders: A group of Barcelona businessmen and professionals who sought to create an educational institution dedicated to serving the society of their time; and who succeeded in doing so.

Convinced of the importance of education, they called upon members of the Society of Jesus to organise and direct the new centre in view of their considerable experience in this field at other centres such as Georgetown in the United States or Deusto in our own country. Consequently, Jesuits and entrepreneurs set in motion an ambitious project to instil strong social and ethical values in responsible individuals, educating them to become

executives capable of managing and improving business and society. I honestly believe that this foundational idea has presided over, and continues to preside over, the ESADE project. For that reason, ESADE’s true assets lie in the 36,000 plus alumni who have attended our institution over the years, as well as the exceptional teams of staff who have formed part, and who continue to form part, of its administrative staff and faculty: to all of them, our appreciation and gratitude.

ESADE is an extraordinary project. We recently celebrated our “50th Anniversary” and our hope is to go on “Inspiring Futures”.

“Jesuits and entrepreneurs set in motion an ambitious project to instil strong social and ethical values in responsible individuals, educating them to become executives capable of managing and improving business and society.”

  • 2Fifty years of history ESADE has been committed to instilling values since its founding as an educational institution. INSPIRING FUTURES

  • Our community

    Our values

The ESADE Community is committed to promoting a set of values consistent with human qualities and academic and professional excellence, values which it aims to use to serve the local and global society of which it forms part. These values are:

The ESADE community declaration of values*

    Our commitment

Based on these values, members of the ESADE Community undertake to act with personal integrity, professional conscientiousness and social responsibility.

Personal integrity means that words and actions are consistent with each other, with personal convictions or beliefs and with the values embodied in the Declaration.

Professional conscientiousness means rigour and effort in carrying out our activities, a culture of effort, continuous up-dating of knowledge, a capacity for autonomy and cooperation, a transforming creativity and a spirit of service and improvement.

Social responsibility means assuming and taking into account the consequences of one’s own decisions and their impact on justice in organisations and society, both locally and globally.

ESADE aims to educate individuals with a high level of professional competence, aware of their responsibilities as national and global citizens, sensitive to issues of solidarity and social justice and able to engage in collective projects. To that end ESADE is involved in promoting ‘human qualities’: a combination of knowledge, judgement, balance and depth that generates confident, consistent, reliable citizens capable of living fundamental values.

Being part of a university institution such as ESADE should involve an attitude of commitment to its Mission: a commitment that is

expressed in the values governing our daily coexistence and academic activity. Those who share these values make up our Community. Members of ESADE freely form part of their Community and, in accepting these basic values, each member should decide on their own way of putting them into practice. In this climate of freedom and mutual respect, ESADE invites its members to promote actions and behaviours that are consistent with its values. This Declaration is open to the changes which may affect our Community in the future.

    1. Acting with integrity in academic and professional endeavours.

This means behaving, even in difficult circumstances, in a manner that reflects the institution’s commitment to fundamental values such as rigour and effort in carrying out activities, honesty, a critical spirit, fairness and a sense of responsibility.

    2. Respecting individuals, colleagues and oneself and being sensitive to the specific circumstances of others.

This means recognising the dignity of all individuals and being able to accompany and help others when needed, working towards building a more just and humane world.

    3. Valuing diversity positively and learning from differences between individuals, ideas and situations.

This means understanding that differences of gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, culture, language, religion, sexual orientation, physical characteristics and other differences are enriching opportunities for learning about other people, the world and oneself.

    4. Searching, sharing and contributing to the common good of the ESADE Community.

This means being aware that the pursuit of one’s own interests cannot be separated from the good of the Community as a whole and this is reflected in attitudes of respect and responsibility towards the Community. envers la comunitat.

    5. Assuming responsibilities and commitments to create a more just society.

This means understanding not only what reality in actual fact ‘is’, but also what it ‘should be’ based on justice, a fundamental value expressed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

    * This Declaration of Values was approved by the Fundació ESADE Board of Trustees on 24th January 2008, with a favourable report issued by the ESADE management bodies, and following a consultation process involving faculty, administrative and services personnel, and student representatives.

ESADE is part of a global environment, and this is reflected in the international background of its participants, faculty, staff, business and academic partners, as well as the various initiatives in which it is involved.

To that end, we carry out global projects, such as:

The consolidation of the multicampus approach, with the growth and expansion of activities at the Buenos Aires, Madrid and Barcelona ESADE campuses.

The consolidation of academic relations with major universities and business school partners in the areas of Management and Law. The launch of the ESADE Global Executive MBA (GEMBA) in conjunction with Georgetown University is the most important innovation in this field.

The expansion of the alumni network through creating chapters and ESADE Alumni delegations in 26 countries worldwide. ESADE Alumni strengthens and adds value to our network of national and international relations.

  • 9ESADE Campus - Creapolis The new Sant Cugat campus, designed to facilitate interaction between academia and business innovation, and built in accordance with criteria of sustainability and accessibility. INSPIRING FUTURES

  • Nearly forty-five companies and organisations support ESADE’s founding purpose through the Corporate Relations Programme, with a total contribution amounting to almost 1.3 million euros. The creation of the large corporate donor model has culminated in a commitment of more than 2 million euros. Over the past three years, total contributions have increased by 260%, reaching a global commitment of almost 5 million euros in the last year. Such commitment can also be seen among ESADE alumni. For the first time in ESADE’s history, the Lic&MBA Class of ‘88 has been behind the creation of a scholarship fund in perpetuity, which

will award an annual grant to a student from the Bachelor in Business Administration-BBA programme. This pioneering initiative represents a new phase in alumni cooperation.

Designed to channel contributions from individuals and organisations, ESADE’s assets fund provides annual funding for research projects and scholarships. This formula makes it possible to plan and manage in the long term, while, at the same time, offering security during times of uncertainty.
