A buoyant economy

With the recession now well behind us, the past year has provided businesses with a more buoyant economy and the strong likelihood that this will continue for some time yet. With GDP running at around 3.0% p.a, inflation under 2% and interest rates still low by historical standards, the only fly in the ointment has been the stubbornly high New Zealand dollar. Many businesses in our East Tamaki precinct have been able to take advantage of the buoyant economy, in the services, export, manufacturing and construction sectors.

Representing your needs

Over the past 12 months, we at GETBA have been concentrating on delivering on the four key strategies which were identified in the 2014 business plan and communicated to all members. The results are summarised in detail in the following report, and I am proud to say on behalf of the GETBA committee, that we have been able to deliver on most of what was detailed in the Plan.

Representation to Local Government (Auckland Council, its Council Controlled Organisations and Local Boards) has been a top priority. The single Council regime has been in place for nearly four years now, and keeping up with proposed plans and bylaw changes is an exercise in itself. We have continued to lobby for a business-friendly regulatory framework and have made submissions on transport, rates, water and wastewater, stormwater and the proposed Unitary Plan. At GETBA we feel that collaboration with other business associations is often better to provide a unified voice on issues such as the Unitary Plan, Overhead Transmission Corridor land use restrictions and proposed transport corridors.

Keeping members informed, encouraging networking, skills development, and a sense of community among businesses, have been a major focus, and our regular events and seminar programmes have been well supported. Our team have also introduced alternative channels for members to be kept informed and to share ideas and experiences, including the formation of interest groups via LinkedIn, which will progress further in the coming year.

A feasibility study into an active recycling programme has developed over the year into what will be an ongoing work-stream that has gathered momentum with interest from local businesses, resulting in several waste minimisation initiatives and resources for members in the area.

Crime Prevention has been a priority for GETBA from day one. Regular intelligence sharing with the Police and security companies, and a range of initiatives made possible by a Ministry of Justice grant, has seen reported burglaries drop by 73% in the GETBA area over the past six years. Initiatives include security audits and crime prevention resources in tandem with an education campaign. We have also undertaken an ANPR camera pilot.

“East Tamaki – a great place to do business” has been our mantra for some years now, and will continue to be as we provide a platform for local businesses to raise their profile locally and globally. The GETBA website is our central point of communication and provides a one-stop-shop for business resources and all that is happening in the business community, and is the vehicle by which we reach out to all members.

At GETBA, we are accountable to you, our business partners, and our aim is to ensure you receive value for money and that we provide you with the necessary environment and resources to grow your business year on year. We are your voice in the business community and we look forward to continuing to work closely with our members to help make your business a success.

GETBA has monitored Auckland Council’s plans and kept members informed of their potential impacts on Auckland’s largest industrial precinct. We liaised with local Councillors and key Council and Council Controlled Organisation personnel, and have met regularly with both the Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board and Howick Local Board.

We have researched, consulted and made submissions on Auckland Council’s Unitary Plan, the Draft Annual Plan 2014 / 15 and the Otara-Papatoetoe and Howick Local Board Plans. We

also contributed to consultation on economic development plans for these Local Boards.

We have also monitored central government plans and policies pertaining to business and liaised with local MP Jami-Lee Ross. We organised an issue-specific meeting with the Minister of Immigration Michael Woodhouse and had senior Cabinet Minister Hon. Judith Collins as a Breakfast speaker, taking the opportunity to reinforce the value of the crime prevention funding which expires mid 2015.

GETBA has continued to lobby for improved infrastructure to meet the needs of Auckland’s largest industrial precinct. We advocated for improved roading and transport infrastructure into and across East Tamaki, specifically the East West Link, AMETI, the Smales / Allens Road widening and intersection improvement, realignment of the Preston / East Tamaki and Ormiston Road intersection, and congestion in the Gossamer / Ti Rakau / Trugood / Cryers area.

We also undertook an analysis of the proposed southern public transport network changes, consulting with local companies to identify gaps and opportunities for improved service provision. As a result, three of the changes suggested in our submission have been integrated into the final southern public transport plan. We have continued to promote alternatives to the one person vehicle and to offer travel planning to businesses

relocating into the area through liaising with property / leasing companies.

In November 2013 GETBA contracted a specialist to examine stormwater in East Tamaki and develop a response to Auckland Council’s Greater Tamaki Stormwater Network Consent feedback request. We have also continued to liaise with Watercare and keep members informed of changes.

We have continued to monitor progress with the Greenmount Landfill and in May 2014 made a submission on Envirowaste Services Limited’s (ESL) application for resource consent to import additional fill to enable rehabilitation of the site.

Our advocacy on infrastructure issues impacting on East Tamaki businesses attracted media coverage in local newspapers.

Auckland Council is compiling a precinct plan for the southern industrial area

GETBA collaborated with five other industrial business associations across Auckland on the submission to the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan to leverage the collective strength and provide consistency of message. We have also collaborated with the Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA) on issues

such as proposed changes to health and safety legislation. The southern business associations have met regularly. We have shared our knowledge and experience with several of these associations particularly with regard to crime prevention and waste minimisation.

Collaboration with other industrial associations

GETBA has responded to 30 requests from local business owners seeking help with regulatory issues with Auckland Council. We are often able to get information or generate action more quickly through our contacts than the public turn-around time, and may be able to fast-track a solution depending upon the nature of the issue.

As a result of complaints about dim lighting we were able to access Howick Local Board funding for a street lighting upgrade in Kerwyn Avenue, Andromeda Crescent, Lorien Place, and Arwen Place. Under GETBA’s new Strategic Plan 2013 / 2016 we have committed to giving this service greater publicity and developing a troubleshooting resource. We have begun collating and documenting common issues and will develop a FAQ section for the website. We are also developing a database of business owners who can assist others.

Education and information

GETBA has provided members with a range of avenues to be informed on current issues and opportunities, and to refresh or develop skills, including speakers at events, seminars, the GETBA website and publications. Events also served as opportunities to network and build a sense of community among local businesses.

We held seven breakfasts during the year attended by 620 members. A mix of high profile and informative speakers included Sir Ray Avery, Watercare’s Marlon Bridge, Mayor Len Brown, Alternate Instinct’s Gavan Hogg, and Business Commentator Rod Oram at our Post Budget breakfast. The new Waipuna Conference Suites at Highbrook has been a welcome addition to the choice of venues for events, enabling larger numbers to be catered for at our Christmas Breakfast with Pio Terei and more recently with Hon. Judith Collins.

The panel-based Business Owners Forum, targeted at business owner/ managers who want to take their business to the next level, in its third year, continued to attract over 50 attendees each time, a total of 228 members. Topics covered were Funding Growth, Selling Effectively in Today’s Economy, Leading a Growing Business, and Succeeding in Export Markets. This popular series is sponsored by BNZ Partners and supported by promotional partners BDO, Brookfields (now Denham Bramwell), POD Consulting, Randstad, RSM Prince, The Breakthrough Co and Wynyard Wood.

We held a Property Owners Forum in July 2013 where 90 property owners heard from panellists from Bayleys, Harrison Grierson and Aon Insurance on proposed changes to the Building Act with particular reference to seismic ratings. In October 2013 we held a Waste Minimisation Forum with panellists Waste Not Consulting and two local

The Management Bites ‘how–to’ series run in partnership with Elephant HR and Training, in its fourth year, attracted 173 attendees and excellent evaluations. We also introduced a Technology Bytes workshop series running three seminars between October 2013 and March 2014 and an additional three on technology related topics at the Expo Seminars in May 2014.

We promoted other relevant educational opportunities including MIT short courses, subsidised

literacy and numeracy training programmes, and ATEED services including R&D courses.

We also kept members informed via GETBA’s website, emails, and in early 2014 converted our hard copy newsletter into a magazine style publication called FOCUS, which is posted three times a year to business owners. The introduction of member advertising has provided businesses with another avenue for promotion and offset any additional costs.

Crime Prevention

Crime prevention has continued to be a high priority. There were 136 reported business burglaries in East Tamaki in the 2013-2014 financial year compared to 96 the previous year – the first increase since 2006, although still a decrease of 73% since that time. The area experienced a spate of targeted burglaries by highly motivated criminals targeting particular high value goods between October 2013 and April 2014. Some were repeat targets, requiring close attention by Police and security companies.

As a response, with funding from the Ministry of Justice, we introduced security audits for local businesses that had been burgled, with recommendations designed to reduce the potential for repeat victimisation. GETBA Crime Prevention Manager Coralee Carr and Snr Constable Garry Boles have undertaken on-site security audits for 68 companies in the past year, plus follow-up visits where required. In addition they provided six

neighbourhood contact lists. The GETBA security audit template is being investigated by the Police for potential nationwide use as a crime prevention tool.

Ministry of Justice funding has also enabled us to develop crime prevention resources which we have distributed to business owners. Some have been targeted at the business owner and others targeted at educating employees to take responsibility for their valuables as a way of reducing opportunistic theft in the workplace and in vehicles. Several of our resources are being reproduced by other associations including Hamilton and Rotorua.

We have updated our web-based resources with a page highlighting simple cost-effective solutions to common security issues faced by business/property owners. We also incorporated a security zone into the Expo. The potential discounted insurance package has not been appropriate in the current climate.

Our strong partnership with the Police and security companies has continued. We reviewed the monthly Security Managers Network meetings (which also include personnel responsible for security in larger organisations) and the positive response reinforced the value of the intelligence-sharing that this forum provides for the stakeholders involved.

GETBA provided 37 email security alerts to members about crime and suspicious behaviour spotted in the area. The ANPR traffic camera pilot was assessed in early 2014 and an approach made to the Howick Local Board for potential funding of more cameras. The Howick Local Board agreed to fund a street lighting upgrade to LED lighting in Kerwyn Avenue, Andromeda Crescent, Lorien Place, and Arwen Place.

GETBA has provided a conduit for local businesses and property owners to access up-to-date business assistance, support and information via speakers at events, links under ‘Business Resources’ on the GETBA website, eNewsletters and magazine articles.

With a small amount of funding from Auckland Council’s Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund we undertook a feasibility study into an active recycling programme for the East Tamaki industrial area. We held a Waste Minimisation Forum, published information to educate businesses on the benefits of having a Waste Minimisation Plan and what steps they can take to reduce waste to landfill, and developed a Waste Minimisation Network group on LinkedIn. We have enabled pallet recycling and negotiated for a plastics recycling drop-off service to be added to the local Waste Disposal Services Transfer Station. We have also begun developing a web-based recycling directory so that businesses can make informed choices with regard to recycling options.

We have researched a Jobs Board service which is now available via GETBA’s LinkedIn page. In the process we have considered resurrecting the

Notice Board feature on the GETBA website, and it will be part of an upgrade of the website home page in the next financial year.

GETBA has updated the Emergency Response Plan developed for the East Tamaki business precinct, and undertaken both a desk based exercise and a live exercise at Transpacific. We have also encouraged local businesses to undertake business continuity planning (BCP) and publicised the business resilience website and online BCP tool developed by Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM).

Under the Auckland Transport Commute initiatives, GETBA is able to provide a travel planning service to businesses moving into the area, and we have contacted local property and leasing companies to ensure they are aware of this service and can inform their clients.

We have raised awareness of the issue of youth unemployment and initiatives to assist, such as Youth Connections. We have encouraged businesses to play their part by providing work experience, internships, sponsorships and, where possible, employment.

GETBA has promoted East Tamaki as a great place to do business and to work via a range of communication channels, encouraging businesses to buy local and employ local. We have provided several platforms for local businesses to raise the profile of their businesses including a Business Connections Expo. The weekly Keep it Local emails have enabled 50 businesses to promote their products and services to one another. We have also introduced advertising in the enhanced GETBA magazine which has been over-subscribed. The additional monthly Keep it Local web banner

opportunity on the GETBA website has not been so popular and will be re-worked. We have continued to offer a free Member’s Moment at Breakfasts as well as a Community Moment. Six companies took the opportunity to sponsor a Breakfast and three businesses hosted Business Showcase events on their premises.

The GETBA website was refreshed and re-launched in September 2013. In addition to making it easier to navigate and access information and resources,

In an effort to attract the interest of more property owners GETBA held a Property Owners Forum on the implications of the proposed changes to the Building Act. This was well attended and, together with the Unitary Plan property owner interest group, is a group we can continue to communicate with in future on property owner related issues.

We have begun the process of identifying businesses that either don’t know of GETBA or aren’t aware of the services available, and will be making enhancements to the CRM database to enable this to be done more effectively in future. As a result of the introduction of new projects and initiatives such as the Waste Minimisation Project and the Expo, we have been interacting with some businesses for the first time and also with different role-holders within organisations.

We have carried out four surveys during the year. These included seeking feedback from both employers and employees on the impacts of proposed public transport changes in the area for our submission.

We have also surveyed East Tamaki employees registered to the Let’s Carpool website and the Security Managers Group participants. We undertook consultation with business owners on waste minimisation via both survey and face-to-face meetings.

We are aware that not every business wants to attend events but are happy to be kept informed on local issues and opportunities and the advocacy work that GETBA undertakes on behalf of the precinct. Similarly, new neighbourhood contact lists which we have developed to support crime prevention have been appreciated.

Ten East Tamaki companies have been profiled in the NZ Manufacturer online magazine in the past year, paid for by GETBA ($365 plus GST). This is a monthly opportunity which gives very good visibility both nationwide and globally as NZTE forwards it to its contacts including overseas offices and clients. GETBA has also had good exposure in local media with stories covering

projects and advocacy issues. The GETBA website was refreshed during the year and has maintained its Google rankings. We have liaised with property companies in considering a proposed new section promoting properties for sale and lease, as part of planned website home page improvements, and it will be incorporated into the coming year’s business plan and budget.

Expo

With the arrival of a function venue in East Tamaki, and after researching Expos run by other business associations, GETBA held a business-to-business focused Expo at Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook in May 2014. The Business Connections Expo aimed to provide a platform for local businesses to promote their products and services to other local businesses, encouraging them to source suppliers locally. We also incorporated security, technology and waste minimisation zones into the exhibitor offering, aligned with GETBA projects / workstreams.

While the exhibitor stands were filled, and there was a good deal of interaction between exhibitors, visitor numbers were disappointing, considering the marketing investment. We marketed the Expo via

multiple channels, including emails and direct mail to East Tamaki business owners, advertising in local papers and publications, 2 billboards and mobile scooter billboards, posters in cafes, ATEED email, other business associations and exhibitor contacts.

There was an element of risk in holding an Expo in a predominantly industrial area, and we have concluded that there is not demand for an Expo of this nature in East Tamaki.

We ran a programme of 10 free seminars in tandem with the Expo which attracted 132 attendees in total. Attendee evaluations were very positive, and we will consider running a similar seminar day again independently of an Expo.

Return on Investment (ROI)

It is important to GETBA that we are able demonstrate to both business owners and property owners a return on the target rate investment. Decision making on all activities is driven by whether there will be a return on investment for our stakeholders.

We have attached a value to as many events and activities as is appropriate and promoted this on the website and in other communications. A number of events and services are free or at a reduced cost through sponsorship or subsidy.

The security audit, for example, would have an estimated market value of $600 plus GST.

We have researched several potential cost-saving benefits for local businesses, including electricity supply, health insurance and vehicle leasing, which we are progressing. The potential discounted insurance package has not been appropriate in the current climate. As part of our Waste Minimisation Project we have been able to introduce a cost saving on the recycling of MDF dust and offcuts for GETBA members, and look forward to more similar savings.

Maintaining an accurate register of members in such a large area is an ongoing challenge. With enhanced capability on board the GETBA staffing team, we have begun an analysis and refinement of our CRM database to ensure accurate recording and tracking of member information, interaction and feedback. In addition to visual drive-bys, phone calls, visits, emails, and returned

mail avenues for keeping member records up to date, we have liaised with commercial property and leasing companies, seeking to be informed of businesses moving into the area. We meet quarterly with Goodman, and they and other property / leasing companies have agreed to distribute GETBA ‘welcome to the area’ packs to new tenants.

Governance and management

GETBA’s Executive Committee responsible for governance, financial oversight and executive support, met eleven times for regular monthly meetings.

GETBA’s activities have been undertaken in accordance with the Association’s Constitution and the Business Improvement District Partnership Programme partnering agreement with Auckland

Council. The new GETBA Strategic Plan 2013-16 is still fresh so will be reviewed for relevance and updated where required in the coming year. The Emergency Response Plan has been updated.

At the beginning of the financial year the staffing level was 4 FTE comprising five staff members, three of whom were part time. The departure of

Financial management and reporting

The Executive Committee met eleven times over the year and monitored expenditure against budget. GETBA’s accounts were audited by Nexia NZ and no issues identified.

A small amount of funding was acquired from Auckland Council for the Waste Minimisation Project.

In early 2014 we implemented online event registration and payment to streamline administration

and also to provide greater payment flexibility for members by introducing credit card payment.

Associate membership composition and criteria were analysed and the fee structure reviewed, resulting in an increase in fees to give greater parity with GETBA member targeted rates. This has meant some churn but associate membership has continued to be popular. We began the year with 78 and finished the year with 70.

BACKGROUNDThe East Tamaki area is the largest and one of the fastest growing commercial and industrial areas in New Zealand, contributing:

$3 billionto the New Zealand economy annually

The Greater East Tamaki Business Association Inc (GETBA) was incorporated in 1994 and until mid 2009 operated as a voluntary subscription based organisation, providing advocacy, crime prevention and business support services.The crime prevention and advocacy services especially were of benefit not just to the 600+ paying members but to the business community as a whole.

In mid 2009 a ballot of property and business owners returned a 72% vote in favour of implementing targeted rating as the most appropriate sustainable funding model. GETBA now represents an enlarged membership base of over 2000 business and property owners in East Tamaki.

With the step up from a voluntary membership of 600+ businesses to a target rated membership of 2000 business and property owners, it was recognised that the Association needed to develop a higher level of internal infrastructure to manage and administer the enlarged workload and a broader range of offerings. GETBA employed a General Manager in early 2010 to drive this expansion. Since then the Association has developed several new service offerings and projects to meet the diverse needs, challenges and opportunities facing business and property owners in Auckland’s largest industrial area.

Representing the needs and concerns particularly of small to medium businesses, which often have the fewest resources to represent themselves, is an ongoing priority for GETBA. We will continue to be a source of information to members about Auckland Council’s plans for the development of the area, and the implications of those plans. We will endeavour to hold Council to its ‘business-friendly’ objective, and will work on behalf of businesses to remove impediments to business growth and economic development, and to enhance property values.

Representation and conduit on infrastructure

GETBA will liaise with, and make representation where necessary, to core infrastructure suppliers and Council Controlled Organisations (CCOs). It is critical that the infrastructure services and the cost of those services provided to East Tamaki be audited and critiqued by informed business representation.

Transport issues have been identified as a significant impediment to East Tamaki businesses' ability to attract and retain staff, and to productivity. We will continue to advocate for roading / intersection improvements to the Gossamer / Ti Rakau / Trugood / Cryers area, the Smales / Allens Road widening / intersection upgrade and the Preston / Ormiston Road intersection upgrade. We will also continue to advocate for the East West Link, keep members informed of progress with AMETI, and represent

the interests of commercial property owners and businesses impacted by these improvements.

GETBA will also continue to represent member interests with regard to non-domestic water and waste water, stormwater, and in the future development of the Greenmount Landfill. We will research the need for a desktop study of the stormwater issues and opportunities in East Tamaki as a precursor to the preparation by Council of a strategic stormwater plan, which is an implementation action in the East Tamaki Business Precinct Plan, and seek co-funding if required. We will also contribute to the development of a long term strategic action plan for the remediation of the Otara Lake and Waterways, and raise awareness among local businesses to support this sizeable challenge where possible.

Collaboration with other industrial associations

GETBA will continue to collaborate with other commercial industrial Business Associations across Auckland to take advantage of the collective strength, and provide consistency of message to local and central government.

We will continue to collaborate on the Unitary Plan process and also on the Draft Long Term Plan. We will also document case studies in relation to the public transport consultation process and the waste minimisation feasibility process for the benefit of other business associations.

2 ACTIVITIES

Education and information

We will continue to subsidise the Business Breakfasts, featuring a variety of speakers on both broad and local issues and informative case studies. The popular Management Bites ‘how to’ series on managing staff which is run in partnership with Elephant HR and Training will also continue into its fifth year. We will continue to provide updates on business related technology and research Tech Bytes topics.

We will introduce a new pilot ten month leadership programme for SMEs in the coming year, targeted at building leadership capability of talented managers /team leaders. On completion, participants will gain credits towards a National Diploma in Business. The programme is designed to sit a level above the first line management / supervisory training offered currently by Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT).

The popular panel-based Business Owners Forum, sponsored by BNZ Partners and targeted

at business owner/managers who want to take their business to the next level, will continue. We will run Property Owners Forums as issues arise and will ask for feedback on topics of interest to property owners and body corporates.

Under GETBA’s Memorandum of Understanding with MIT we will continue to be a conduit to MIT short courses, and to facilitate work experience, internships and graduate employment. We intend to develop a template tool to undertake a skills demand audit of the precinct in partnership with MIT, Auckland Council, Comet Auckland and ATEED, under the Precinct Plan.

We will distribute bi-monthly eNewsletters and publish three FOCUS magazines during the year. These avenues provide timely news, information and project updates, celebrate local achievements and foster a sense of community.

Crime prevention

Crime prevention will continue to be a high priority. We will continue to provide timely email security alerts to local businesses about local crime and suspicious behaviour, encouraging vigilance. GETBA’s Crime Prevention Manager in partnership with the Police will continue to provide security audits to businesses that have been burgled to endeavour to prevent re-victimisation.

We will keep providing crime prevention resources as funding allows, and raise awareness of simple interventions to make premises and staff safer via GETBA’s website and FOCUS magazine.

Our strong partnership with the Police and security companies will continue, with monthly Security Managers Network meetings (which also include personnel responsible for security in larger organisations) for informal intelligence-sharing supplemented by ad hoc assistance as issues arise.

Business support

GETBA will continue to provide a conduit for local businesses and property owners to access up-to-date resources, via the GETBA website, speakers at workshops and events, magazine articles, etc.

The Auckland Council-funded waste minimisation feasibility study has developed into an ongoing GETBA work-stream, and we will seek additional Council WMIF funding to extend this project. We will keep on raising awareness of the bottom line business benefits of sustainability and minimising waste. We will complete the web-based recycling directory and continue to identify and introduce initiatives that help to reduce East Tamaki businesses’ waste to landfill, address troublesome waste products, and promote uptake by local businesses through our range of communication channels. The Howick Local Board will fund a consultant to undertake an industry pollution prevention programme of site visits which GETBA will facilitate.

With some funding from Auckland Transport, GETBA will maintain the promotion of alternative ways to commute and provide a travel planning service to both existing and new businesses. Having had input

into the proposed new southern public transport network we will promote the improved routes and timetabling changes when it takes effect in 2015.

As a significant employment hub, GETBA will maintain work with Auckland Council’s Youth Connections, the Southern Initiative, Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) and other education institutions to address the problem of youth unemployment. We will investigate incorporating a Jobs Board service, currently accessible via LinkedIn, into our website. We will also encourage businesses to assist local employment by providing work experience, internships, sponsorships and the like to students at these institutions.

GETBA will continue to raise awareness of the business benefits of UFB, and keep members up-to-date with relevant advances in technology. GETBA will ensure the Emergency Response Plan developed for the East Tamaki business precinct is kept current. We will still advocate for local businesses to undertake business continuity planning (BCP). We also intend to research the provision of an affordable health and safety package targeted at SMEs.

3 ATTRACTION

Keeping it Local business support

GETBA will promote East Tamaki as a great place to do business and to work, and provide a platform for local businesses to raise the profile of their businesses. The 'Keep it Local' ethos encourages local businesses to do business with one another, to employ local where possible, and encourages a sense of community among businesses.

We will consider new ‘Keep it Local’ marketing opportunities and promote existing avenues, including the recently introduced advertising opportunities in the GETBA magazine. We will ascertain the demand for a ‘one day sale’, an opportunity for both factory shops to drive traffic to their outlet and also manufacturers and wholesalers to clear excess stock.

The web-based Business Directory provides businesses with a public profile for their products and services. We intend to raise awareness of this feature by upgrading the Home page to include a Directory sample that changes with each visit. We will also build on the enhanced listing value by including the monthly web banner in the package.

We will continue to offer the free Member’s Moment at Breakfasts, the Breakfast sponsorship and Business Showcase hosting opportunities. Business Showcase events give the company hosting an opportunity to raise the profile of their business on-site, and attendees the opportunity to network with other East Tamaki businesses.

While GETBA posts a letter to every property owner supplied by Council’s rating department with notification of each Annual General Meeting, it is apparent that there are some property owners that are either unaware of GETBA, not interested, or who don’t understand the benefit. We will continue to identify issues of relevance to this stakeholder group, hold Property Forums as appropriate and introduce an interest group on LinkedIn targeted at meeting the needs of property owners / owner occupiers.

The strategic planning consultation process identified that there were also some businesses that either didn’t know of GETBA, or if they did, weren’t aware of the services available. GETBA will proactively involve property companies and those who are active in GETBA to help introduce those who are unaware of GETBA services or new to the area. We will also continue to research potential interest areas for members to share ideas and experiences building on the existing LinkedIn interest groups.

We value good media relationships and will seek to establish media connections and get positive publicity and promotional opportunities for East Tamaki and local businesses, beyond the current local papers.

We will implement a sponsored properties for sale/lease page on GETBA’s website. The GETBA website is a tool for promoting East Tamaki businesses outside the area with the Home page and Business Directory getting the most page hits. We intend to upgrade the Home page with additional ‘sticky’ features including a sample of

the Business Directory and a sponsored property update feature which will link to the new for sale/lease section.

We will continue to promote local businesses and East Tamaki as a great place to do business by paying for company profiles in the NZ Manufacturer online magazine which gives very good visibility overseas as NZTE forwards it to overseas offices and clients. We will look for other such opportunities.

The travel planning service for businesses moving into the area is a significant opportunity to improve the attractiveness of East Tamaki as an employment destination.

It is important to GETBA that we are able demonstrate to both business owners and property owners a return on the target rate investment. Decision making on all activities is driven by whether there will be a return on investment for our stakeholders.

Where appropriate we will attach a value to each event or activity and promote this on the website and in other communication channels. We will continue to research new member offers for local businesses.

Database management

Keeping an accurate register of members in such a large area is an ongoing challenge. In addition to the current visual drive-bys, and combination of phone calls, visits, emails, and returned mail, we will liaise regularly with property companies to be kept informed of businesses moving into the area.

The property companies will also distribute GETBA ‘welcome to the area’ packs to new tenants.

Recording and tracking feedback, useful information on local issues and engagement levels is important. We will keep on refining the capability of the CRM database.

Governance and management

GETBA’s organisational structure comprises an Executive Committee in a governance, financial oversight, and executive support role, and a small Executive team of 4.6 led by a General Manager. Budgeted staffing levels should be adequate for the coming year’s proposed plans.

Potential new projects will be assessed so as not to put pressure on staffing resources, and we will continue to consider contracting specialist expertise for specific purposes as required.

Professional development opportunities for staff will be sought to support succession planning, and ongoing mentoring. Annual performance reviews will be undertaken.

Activities will begin in accordance with GETBA’s Constitution and the Business Improvement District Partnership Programme partnering agreement with Auckland Council. We will review the GETBA Strategic Plan 2013-2016 for relevance, and ensure the Emergency Response Plan is kept current.
