Foreword

This report seeks to present a concise description of activities and processes at Al Fazal held during the financial year 14 - 15. Al Fazal continued its efforts to create access to quality education for poor and marginalized children, especially those belonging to the Muslim community in Godhra by sustaining one English and another Gujarati medium school. With improved management practices and training opportunities for teachers and the management staff, the bygone year has been one of immense learning and doing things differently to understand various dynamics to run educational institutes to socially uplift marginalized communities.

The sewing classes got an encouraging response from girls and women in the community as always and the consistent efforts by the sewing class coordinator have inspired the trustees to propose collaboration with the district administration for it to be recognized and given an affiliation.

Several moderated discussions among the trustees and the programme consultant have triggered a change process at Al Fazal that we hope shall help the organization gear itself up to meet expectations and challenges within and outside its programme area.

…The Al-Fazal Educational and Charitable Trust; the first Muslim women trust registered with the charity commissioner, Godhra, Panchamahals. Also being the first ‘Muslim’ women's organisation in Godhra, these women had to face the wrath of their own community initially, but they continued undeterred, and the community gradually turned supportive and the organization is today better known as ‘Al Fazal’ in Godhra. All members of the trust are active and participate in planning and implementing the trust’s activities regularly. Besides helping the affected families gain access to relief and legal assistance, they also contributed to peace-building processes in Godhra under arduous circumstances. Like all NGOs and CBOs that emerged in the post violence context, Al Fazal too has a dual role to play: a. of facilitating reintegration of Muslim children and families into communities and out of relief colonies and b. of ensuring children’s return to mainstream schools, which calls for capacity building of NGOs on these issues.

The main objective of Al Fazal is to elevate social, educational, and economic standards of Muslim children, youth, especially girls and women, who the trust believes are drivers of bringing about meaningful change in the Muslim community. Therefore Al Fazal has chosen to focus on their education and employment.

The trust runs two schools:

(1) An English medium Primary and Secondary School (2) A Gujarati medium primary school (3) A training centre for women, where they learn tailoring.

Al Fazal is located in Satpul, which is an all-Muslim locality in Godhra. The socio economic conditions of people in the area are no better than a hand to mouth existence. The children coming to the Al Fazal schools are mostly first generation learners. Most parents are small traders, daily wage earners, rickshaw drivers or have small business to keep them going. The area does not have any Municipal school in the radius of 2 Kilometers that makes access to good quality education a remote possibility for most of these families.

The demand for mainstream education apart from religious education; from within the Muslim community; post carnage is significant. Providing access to mainstream education is the foremost concern of most of the Community based Organisations that emerged in the post violence context in Gujarat and most of their interventions are centred on access to education. In Satpul, the culture of sending children regularly to the school is non-existent. It is a common feature to see most boys dropout of school to work at a garage or a tea stall or a shop by the age of 10 - 11 years to contribute to the meager family earnings and girls dropout to help with household chores, taking care of siblings or are married off.

The English medium school run by the Al Fazal trust is not only the first one in the Muslim locality, but it is also centrally located and hence easily accessible. The community identifies closely with the school since it has also been a community centre post the mayhem, especially for women and children.

The school began with preprimary classes in 2002 and is now extended up to the eighth standard in the English medium and up to the seventh standard in the

…As per the annual action plan, Al Fazal has been abuzz with curricular and co-curricular activities in the reporting period. While the teachers dedicated most part of their time to preparing for and conducting the annual examinations and declaring results, the children prepared for their exams and awaited the long summer vacations to follow.

Planned efforts were made to enroll new students for the academic year (2014-15) in Al Fazal, whereby teachers and trustees worked together. Like every year the admission policy was explained to all parents who were interested and their wards were enrolled depending upon their choice. Al Fazal has seen a marginal increase in enrolment which is an indication of growing awareness about and a change in attitude towards education.

Families from the lower middle class aspire for an English medium education and computer skills for their children.

Teacher’s meetings, parent’s meetings and home visits have been planned and executed on schedule. A School Management Committee and a Sexual Harassment Committee have been constituted with representatives from the community, trustees and the teachers at Al Fazal. Efforts will be made to strengthen the role of these committees and equip them with requisite knowledge and skills to be able to perform an active role at Al Fazal.

Working with a close-knit community that has been left out of the mainstream as one knows it, is a task in itself. Especially, when education is not a priority in the order of things, it is a challenge to facilitate re prioritisation, even if it is in the interest of the children. Children in Satpul are expected to straddle religious and mainstream education and given the sociopolitical and cultural context in Godhra parents are more inclined towards providing religious education to their children rather than mainstream. This mindset impinges upon the children’s performance. Although, teachers make home visits to counsel parents and parents are invited to the monthly parent’s meeting, this is a cultural change that will take several years of intensive engagement before one is able to see real change.

While Al Fazal strives to promote diversity, one realizes that promoting diversity comes with a cost and the premium is quite high. The teachers at Al Fazal are mostly Hindu and children are all Muslim, which should make for a good case. However, it has been a challenge reconciling varying cultural needs and practices. The State Education Board in Gujarat goes by the Hindu calendar that has vacations for summer, Diwali festival, Navaratri (Dussera) festival and Uttarayan (Kite Festival) there is not more than 1 national holiday for Muslim festivals. The state board refuses to alter summer vacations or allow a month long vacation during Ramzan. These long vacations eat into quality education time.

Al Fazal is striving to enroll and retain girl children from the community and help them build a good career. However, school education for girls is not a priority area in the community. Hence girls in the community are either not enrolled at all or pulled out of school arbitrarily to take care of siblings or contribute to household chores, etc. Al Fazal will make efforts to enroll and retain girl children.

During the year the focuses was on improving quality of teachers and bring more participatory actions from the parents for growth of child. There are several teachers and parents meetings were held in this period apart from 8 major co-curricular activities.

According to the plan following are major activities occurred during this period.

1. Visit of Public place :- This year we decided to give practical knowledge for the students, therefore we tried to visit some public place. This visit was not only for the fun but the students get knowledge about it and become familiar with them. So this year we choose two places for our public place visit (1) Railway station (2) B-division (police station ) , Godhra , this visit is the one of the most development for the students as well as teachers. In rRailway station visit we get the information about the activity of the railway and also works by railway and its function.Students a have fear from the police therefore we visited police station. Police Inspector gave heartily support and explained about the work and weapons ,custody and suggestion about the making future and alert from the crime.

2. Speaking Class :- English language is the most important language in our life, and in English it is must for speaking English for students, We tried to teach them with different types of methods for example story telling , communicative ,Group discussion , Daily routine , compulsory speak in class, also in assembly and recess time. Also guide them for reading English newspaper and magazine,. Teachers gave different projects for development of English in their daily life.

3. Basic class :- This year we organized the basic class for the weak students, some students have come from other schools , which background and basic was very poor especially in lower standard. So we arranged basic class for these students for the improvement in their basic level. we divided groups and taught them from the primary level. This is one of the benefit for the weak students and their improvement.

4. G.k. & Adoption class :- G.k. is necessary for the each standard of the students , they learn g.k. from the book , but we have to give them extra knowledge , so we organized the quiz competition and the adoption classes for the students , we took care for each and particular students, This was the one of the best way to teach for G.K. .

5. Cleanliness Movement :- This year our honorable Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi started the movement of the cleanliness, So, in every school , offices and other institutions , started the movement of the cleanliness movement .We not only cleaned our school but also the local area of the residential, and it was the one of the best way to clean our city and clean our school. We followed the instruction by the government and joined in this unique way.

6. Semester wise evaluation :- Government introduce new semester syllabus , so first of all we followed the rules of the government and study their profile and introduced the new syllabus in our academic year. And followed in both medium

5

7. Survey of local area :- This time our school made survey for the local area of our school. The main purpose of this survey is to be get information about the local area, and also benefit for the admission for the next year. Both medium teachers staff divided into different groups and made the survey for increases students for our school.

8. School management committee (SMC): The school management committee consists of 7 females and 8 males and all are parents of the children studying in both the schools at organization. The SMC usually bridge gaps between school and community, parents and children’s growth and infrastructural issues of the school. The SMC at organization also helpful in doing counseling of girl’s parents who don’t encourage their daughter to study beyond 7 grades. Due to this intervention ratio of girls students are retained in the higher standard. SMC also help in enrollment of new kids at school. In the coming activity plan organization has decided to upgrade the skills of SMC members. The SMC meet once in a month at school and this meeting is also attended by principals of both schools, teachers and parent wants to put their opinion forward. The SMC has also helped in enrolling adolescent girls to other skill building programs i.e. stitching and computer courses run by the organization post school hours.

9. Student’s Profile: At Alfazal’s both the schools each child has their own file as their own profile. Creating and maintaining student profiles have helped organization to increase the level of self confidence among children. The student profile contains poems, paintings, pictures and special notes on the visits the child has made during several visits. All students’ profiles are kept in school premises and being exhibited during parents meeting.

10. Teacher’s training and regular motivational meetings with them: Special training sessions were organized during reporting period to boost skills of teachers and introduce new techniques though exposure visits of different schools run special modules for their children, spoken English classes and computer courses for teachers. Teachers are also involved in subject wise trainings though and sports. Due to this teacher are motivated to organize 8 different co-curricular activities during the reporting period. The organization has focused on this intervention by organizing individual sessions and sending teachers to participate trainings organized by education board from govt.

11. Parents meeting: Organizing parents meeting at school has only resulted in giving information about irregularity of children, absents, not finishing homework, special preparation for co-curricular activities etc. In most of the meetings the hot topic is about betterment of school infrastructure, it is difficult to convince parents that school runs on very limited resources.

12. Skill building program for adolescent girls: During the reporting period special skill building program for girls beyond 8th standard were organized post school timings. These skill building programs have held in school premises. The SMC have made enrollment of many other old girls (who are not studying in schools) from the community to avail benefit of such program

The school has also introduced audio visual teaching aids supported by few other donors. The digitization’s of special educational sessions have attracted kids and increase their attention in to subjects. Due to limited space such sessions only occur once in week. The positive thing is many schools in nearby locality have also requested to organize such sessions in Alfazal’s premises for their students

6

which has increase the interface among kids with different schools and resulted a good publicity of the school also.

Alfazal’s these interventions have attracted the dist. Education officer (DEO) and he has offered to enroll teachers from Alfazal schools and made visits also at school.

The trustees are discussing ways of running both the schools and exploring funding options in coming years. The trustees have met regularly in the reporting period and there has been an increase in their involvement in planning and executing activities at the school.

Al Fazal has been vibrant and eventful in the reporting period and we wish to continue with the same performance in coming year with increased levels of participation of students, parents, teachers, community with new admissions.
